Derms say sweating is wildly beneficial to the appearance of your skin—here’s why

February 22, 2019 at 12:00PM by CWC We all know that breaking a sweat is beneficial: It means we’re exerting ourselves, our blood is pumping, oxygen is flowing into our lungs and energizing our cells. But there’s an added bonus—it’s also a major beauty boost. “We tend to think about the benefits of exercise in terms of fitness, and we even recognize its ability to lift our mood and help with sleep, but we don’t usually think of its profound role in keeping skin looking young and firm,” says Manhattan dermatologist Whitney Bowe, MD. This isn’t just because physical activity boosts the metabolism of cellular mitochondria and prevents the thinning of skin that occurs with age, it’s also because the schvitz itself acts to purify, protect, and rejuvenate the complexion. Perspiration, that salty brew of H2O and minerals many consider to be one of the body’s less savory secretions, is essentially the body’s air-conditioning system. Its evaporation on the surface of the skin keeps us from over-heating, and regulates our core temperature when things get toasty—either internally or externally. “It helps with water balance for your entire body,” says dermatologist Doris Day, MD. “It also contains natural moisturizing factor, which helps keep the skin hydrated and healthy.” Even though most of us rush to wash it off post workout (and rightly so, since its urea content can irritate the epidermis if left long un-rinsed), it’s actually bolstering the microbiome while it sits on skin. Sweat is the source of an

We asked a Feng Shui expert how to arrange plants in order to attract love, wealth, and other good vibes

February 22, 2019 at 10:20AM by CWC Before Marie Kondo and her spark joy test, Feng Shui was a go-to technique for doing everything from decluttering your home to clearing off your coffee table to priming your bedroom for better sleep or a boosted love life. Another thing the ancient Chinese concept can help you with around the house? Arranging your houseplants in order to cultivate abundance, love, health, and more good vibes. “In broad strokes, Feng Shui is a rhythmic practice of replacing heavy energy with fresh, light energy,” says Meghan Wallace James, a Feng Shui expert who is certified in both Eastern and Western practices. “Plants absolutely support this practice: cleaning the air, vibrating with growth, bringing the natural world indoors—and looking lovely to boot.” At its foundation, Feng Shui is the science of using energy sources to create harmony with people and their environments. As plants are sources of life, they can be powerful to incorporate into your space. “Plants are a Feng Shui heavy hitter, for they are a physical embodiment of the material elements correlated with the love zones (earth element) and the wealth zones (wood element) on the Bagua, which is the Feng Shui floor plan map,” James explains. It’s worth noting that she says the vast majority of people she encounters want more love and more money. (I mean, same, no?) When welcoming plants into your home you should be a bit discerning and really focus on the energy you want to bring forward.

Now presenting the award for best protein bar to…

February 22, 2019 at 09:52AM by CWC Walk into any drugstore (or gas station, or grocery store) and you’re bound to come across one aisle that’s full of protein bars. And blessedly so—it’s great to have options, especially when those options come in flavors like chocolate brownie, cookie dough, and mint chocolate chip. But so you don’t waste time on chalky protein bars or secret sugar bombs, I’m just going to go ahead and tell you what the best one is: RxBar Chocolate Sea Salt. This number one ranking comes from SnackNation, a snack box subscription service. The brand launched their first snack awards this week, according to a press release, and choose from a wide variety of snacks to award top honors to the best bar, chips, meat snacks, sweets, and more. SnackNation says it used a proprietary data formula based on product rating and “purchase intent data” as well as nutrition and ingredient information to determine the winners in all of the categories. Here’s a run-down of the ingredients in the RxBar: egg whites, almonds, cashews, chocolate, cocoa, natural flavors, and sea salt. The bar contains 13 grams of sugar, though none of it is added sugar. It also has 12 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. That’s pretty impressive! The runners-up in the established bar category (meaning bars from well-known brands) were Appleways Blueberry Pomegranate Breakfast Bar, Clif Salted Caramel Cashew Protein Bar, Kashi Trail Mix Chewy Granola Bars, and Nature’s Bakery Raspberry Whole Wheat Fig Bar.

6 memes that perfectly sum up Pisces people

February 22, 2019 at 09:40AM by CWC The astrological tide has changed and we are now officially in Pisces season, which means you can and should expect a lot of emotions from everyone all the time (at least until March 20). As a time of year that’s ruled by water—plus, the transitional period from winter to spring, Pisces season is a tumultuous time wherein reflection, intuition, and sentimentality preside over your life rather than, say, rationality and logic. Another thing the new zodiac season is bringing is the beginning of a new meme cycle, which is TBH, probably what I’m most excited about. Kind of like the way that Facebook is the only reminder of people’s birthdays, Instagram memes are a foolproof reminder of the changing astrological periods. Pisces season is an especially good time for astrology memes since some of Pisces’ trademark characteristics are being hyper-emotional, unconditionally-loving escapists—all great internet fodder for sure. Get ready to be in your feelings for the next month and scroll down to see the top 6 Pisces characteristics perfectly summed up as memes.
