How to get the most out of butt-sculpting donkey kicks every single time
March 27, 2019 at 05:00PM by CWC Nothing gets me more excited in a workout than being instructed to do a move that’s modeled after an animal (hey, I’m an animal lover, what can I say?). Color me thrilled to do a bear crawl, frog pose, or—best of all—some classic donkey kicks. The thing is, though, the more I try do them myself, the more I resemble the donkey from Shrek than my graceful instructor. My leg gets wobbly as I push my foot up towards the ceiling, I’m pretty sure my hips are falling all over the place, and sometimes I feel the muscles in my legs burning more than in my bum. So to ensure I’m getting the best bang for my butt, I asked a trainer for the most common things people get wrong about donkey kicks—and how to do them the right way. First of all, you want to be doing the glute-burning move because it works a lot more than just your butt. “Donkey kicks are beneficial in a workout because not only do they enhance the shape of your butt, but they also strengthen your hips and stretch your hip flexors,” says Abena Tolentino, certified Romana Pilates instructor and owner of Abena Pilates. “They work the muscles around your hip flexors, your abs, arms, calf muscle, and Achilles’ tendon—so really the whole body if you really focus on control and balance in movement.” What makes the beautiful, ballet-esque donkey kick transform into a clumsy donkey,
Asking for a friend: How long can food last in the freezer?
March 27, 2019 at 04:00PM by CWC I have a phobia of getting food poisoning. Ever since I learned the “S” word—salmonella—my brain decided to add it to the list of things I stress about on the reg. My mom likes to tell me that I when I was younger I refused to be in the kitchen when she was handling raw chicken because I was afraid of catching salmonella by osmosis. I’ve somewhat gotten past that hurtle, but I still spend an inordinate amount of time searching the internet for things like “can frozen food go bad,” and “how long does cooked meat last in the fridge.” Yeah, I’m tons of fun. For people like me, the freezer is actually a great thing when it comes to food safety. “Before the dawn of TV dinners, freezing food was used as a preservation method,” says Ashley Lonsdale, Daily Harvest’s head chef and recipe developer. Unlike your fridge, which can only keep foods fresh for so long (ahem, milk), Lonsdale says that food that is frozen is safe to eat almost indefinitely. (Yup, let that sink in. Indefinitely.) However, just because frozen food can last forever doesn’t mean that it’ll always be something you want to eat. The quality and taste of said foods can degrade over time—the longer it’s in the freezer, the more at-risk it is to develop freezer burn (ice crystals that can damage food). “I recommend consuming store-bought frozen fruits and vegetables by the ‘best by’ date
Use this 3-step checklist to decide whether your ex is even worthy of your friendship
March 27, 2019 at 03:00PM by CWC We can all agree that “I hope we can still be friends” is the biggest BS kiss-off that can emerge from a breakup conversation. The whole thing feels like an urban legend of sorts. So few of us are able to manage being friends with an ex without it ending badly—and why is it even a goal? When looking at the sitch from a distance, it seems obvious that the whole endeavor is masochistic in nature because well-intentioned boundaries quickly give way to broken ones. In fact, research shows people who want to stay friends with their ex and bona fide psychopaths are known to share some similar dark traits. So call me a psychopath, because though most of my attempts at befriending an ex have ended with some ill-fated trips to bedroom and/or vile, misogynistic Facebook messages, I keep on keeping on. Among the dozen or so ex-whatevers I’ve had over the years, there’s at least one sweet goth boy with whom I am down to share text memes and a coffee. And that’s enough evidence to sell me on the whole masochistic runaround maybe being worth the struggle. After all, occasionally you earnestly care for someone, but being with them in a romantic relationship isn’t the right move. Or maybe enough time has passed to heal your emotional wounds. Or maybe you share a family or your lives are otherwise permanently enmeshed. In these cases and many others, friendship might be

March 27, 2019 at 12:31PM by CWC Here at Well+Good HQ, we’re constantly singing the praises of drugstore beauty. From our favorite $7 toner to the French girl-favorite body wash that has become a staple in all of our showers, not a day goes by in our offices without someone waxing poetic about the skin-care product they found at Target or CVS or Walgreens that they now can’t live without. We’re not the only ones fawning over affordable buys these days: Dermatologists, too, are always sharing their tried-and-true product recommendations, most of which max out at well under $40. A scenic view does wonders for your happiness—even in the city
March 27, 2019 at 12:24PM by CWC It’s no surprise that natural beauty makes people happy. When I think of the most stunning places in the world, I’m transported to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Antelope Canyon, places yet to be ruined by development. Human presence often spoils the unspoiled (see: Joshua Tree). But an urban surrounding with city views provides a burst of happiness, too. In a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports, researchers looked into settings that boost your mood by collecting data on individual happiness from the Mappiness app, as well as and ratings of “scenicness” from the online game Scenic-Or-Not. What they found was that while people are indeed happier in locations deemed scenic, this includes both those in natural environments and built-up areas in urban settings. “It’s not just a natural area that might have an impact on happiness, but we might also feel happier in more beautiful areas in our cities,” data scientist and study author Chanuki Illushka Seresinhe told Scientific American. “I think what’s interesting about this research is it shows that just a small injection of beauty into an area of a city can create happiness for possibly thousands of people that are being exposed to that.” While visiting some of the most otherworldly places on the planet is a bucket list must, this study shows you can find happiness without immediate access to nature. And these are some of the best city views to prove it: 1/10 Sydney, Australia Getty

The least expensive step in your skin-care routine is also the most important
March 27, 2019 at 11:16AM by CWC “Did you wash your face before you got in bed?” It was the question my mom called into my room every single night until I left for college, and still asks me—a 27-year-old beauty editor—whenever I’m staying with her. So to say that she drilled it into my head that “cleansing your skin is important!!!!!!!!” would be the understatement of the last two decades. But every now and then, when I’m feeling tipsy or tired or some combination of the two, I’ll get into bed without giving my face a wipe down. I rarely wear makeup, and have been blessed to barely ever get pimples since puberty, so what’s the harm anyways—right? Actually, as I recently discovered, that is super wrong. Whoops! Despite the fact that I’m not worried about breakouts, by skipping out on the cleansing step, I’m actually doing a major disservice to my anti-aging routine. Everyone knows that washing your face, especially at night, is important for getting dirt and grime off of your face in order to avoid zits. But it’s also critical for removing pollution, which can lead to free-radical damage—and eventually, signs of aging. In fact, not only should you be cleansing once every night, but you should really be doing it two times over. “So often we think [that] cleansing your skin from makeup, dirt, and pollution will nix acne, but there’s actually a great anti-aging effect to double cleansing,” says Soko Glam founder Charlotte Cho. “Pollution
