Astrologically speaking, your worst relationship wasn’t a vortex—it was a black hole
April 10, 2019 at 09:51AM by CWC Black holes are known for massive gravitational pull so strong that it sucks in everything that gets close to it, including planets and stars. Even light can’t escape it. On April 10, when astronomers unveiled the first photograph of one of these insatiable cosmic chasms, the impossible suddenly seemed possible. It is a huge deal, astronomically speaking. But did you know that black holes loom large in the world of astrology as well? Prior to capturing the new image, “scientists have detected black holes only indirectly, by their signatures, such as a gamma ray burst, supernova or, perhaps, an object on the brink of a black hole’s event horizon,” according to The New York Times. “Typically, if tremendous energy is emanating from a massive core at the center of a galaxy, the core is probably a black hole.” In astrology, the magnetic pull of a black hole is recognized for its effect on your life by in terms of good or bad. “[Black holes] represent total abandon, inescapable conditions, intense focus and personal magnetism or ability to attract; the startling, stunning turn of events in the twinkling of an eye, where old conditions disappear and a new reality is birthed,” astrologer Alex Miller, author of The Black Hole Book, writes in Sasstrology.com. The idea is that, during volatile change, you reach a void state where new inspiration and grace can enter your life. On a slightly darker note, though, black hole energy can
The existential reason why the person you love is endlessly infuriating
April 10, 2019 at 08:05AM by CWC I used to think of Bella and Edward from Twilight as the epitome of #relationshipgoals. Back then I had a very different idea of what it meant to have “chemistry” with another human being. Fangs and immortality aside, I believed that the pair of blood-crossed lovers was the equivalent of two reactive yet compatible elements of the periodic table. Bella and Edward irked each other to no end. Why are so many of us on a subconscious, relentless quest to find someone who will make us as lovingly infuriated as a 100-year-old vampire? Leave it to a psychoanalyst and essayist to articulate the (somewhat) existential reason that falling in love is so frustrating. “All love stories are frustration stories,” author Adam Phillips writes in Missing Out: In Praise of the Unlived Life, in an excerpt published by Brain Pickings. “To fall in love is to be reminded of a frustration that you didn’t know you had (of one’s formative frustrations, and of one’s attempted self-cures for them); you wanted someone, you felt deprived of something, and then it seems to be there.” In a truly poetic fashion, Phillips explains that rekindling frustrations with romantic flames leads to more intense satisfaction. “It is as if, oddly, you were waiting for someone but you didn’t know who they were until they arrived,” he writes. (Wow, wow, wow—am I right?) The nostalgically romantic dance Phillips describes is emblematic of the psychological concept of attachment theory, according
These editor-tested gel moisturizers are a perfect match for oily skin
April 10, 2019 at 06:00AM by CWC If you’ve got oily skin, picking out a moisturizer can feel like Hilary Duff waiting for Chad Michael Murray at the end of A Cinderella Story: Useless and disappointing. And things get more complicated in the summer, when sweat and high temps exacerbate the situation even further. If you’ve spent the better part of the last decade in search of a product that will leave your face hydrated without looking like it’s been slicked in a coat of grease, you’re in luck, because gel moisturizers have got you covered. “The biggest benefit of using a gel moisturizer is that you get lightweight hydration,” says clean beauty guru Tata Harper, who is launching a gel moisturizer of her own early next month. “I think of our Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer as a weightless hydrator because of the Gel Water Technology. It’s unique because it basically creates a moisture barrier that helps trap water so your skin feels hyper-hydrated, but not heavy at all. Gel moisturizers are also great for people who like to layer a lot of products, like me, but don’t want to feel heavy or weighed down.” Harper notes that her product, in particular, is meant for people with oily or combination skin, who may be hesitant to slather their faces in the type of heavy creams that dry-skinned women tend to rely on. “So many people with oily skin think they don’t need a moisturizer, but that’s not true!” she says. “Oily skin needs moisture
4 healthy (and easy) formulas to take the guesswork out of dinner tonight
April 10, 2019 at 05:10AM by CWC “I’m not asking you to reinvent the wheel.” I repeat this mantra to myself each night when it’s time to decide what to eat for dinner. I’m never more indecisive than when I’m hangry. And despite the wealth of enticing eats from my Trader Joe’s haul, I often find myself unable to make a decision when it comes to preparing an easy dinner. Thanks to food blogger (and meal prep heroine) Amanda Meixner, however, I may have finally discovered a way to take the guesswork out of chow time. In a post from Sunday, Meixner shared what may be the only foodstagram you’ll ever need: A slideshow featuring four formulas, each with an equally a nutritious mealtime solution. Each equation contains just four steps, allowing for mixing and matching with your favorite greens, starches, proteins, and healthy fats. Dinner just got easier with 4 formulas from meal prep master Amanda Meixner. We scoured the internet for the 10 very best plant-based breakfast recipes
April 10, 2019 at 05:00AM by CWC While there’s no shortage of different eating plans out there—who knows, there might be a new one being born right now—most healthy eaters agree that a diet that’s primarily plant-based is the best way to go. It’s also the safest when hosting a meal. If one person is dairy-free, someone else is vegetarian, and a third person is pegan, you’ll end up filling the table with food everyone can actually eat. Thankfully, as plant-based eating has gotten more and more popular, people have really upped their recipe game (so long, flavorless tofu scrambles!). While this is definitely great news, it now takes quite a bit of work to dig through all of them to find the really good ones. Well, we did all the hard work for you, sifting though well known recipe blogs—and not so well-known ones—to find 10 plant-based breakfast recipes that are delicious, healthy, and don’t take too much time to master. Keep reading to see the best of the best. Scroll down for 10 plant-based breakfast recipes eaters of all diet types will love. Photo: Lily Kunin 1. The one mistake derailing your whole meditation practice, according to an energy healer
April 10, 2019 at 04:00AM by CWC Ever been in a situation where you find out that you’ve been doing something either wrong or totally inefficiently since, oh, the beginning of time? (Like realizing you should have thought of that iced-matcha shortcut first, or could have saved so much time had you just known about this mind-blowingly simple decorating trick…) Well, it’s time to get way back to basics, because the thing I most recently discovered I’ve been doing totally wrong is the only thing I do consistently, at all hours of every single day. Oh, and there’s a good chance you’re doing it wrong, too. During my recent trip to Bali, I had my first-ever session with an energy healer, I Wayan Linggen. The session started with a full-body massage that leaned more sports-esque than Swedish as he searched for energy blocks via physical chakra points. And afterward, he gave me the prognosis: When he pressed on the fleshy area right above my hipbones, I felt discomfort, which pointed to a blocked second chakra and a busy mind. “It’s an emotional muscle. Many things can make this area hurt,” he told me. “When you have a busy mind, sometimes it feels like a mess—this pain in the stomach is connected. When you’re tired or thinking too much, it’s connected.” And since I’ve got a hunch that I’m not the only sleepy worker bee thinking a mile a minute who has lower abdominal discomfort conveniently located exactly where menstrual cramps
