May 29, 2019 at 11:05AM by CWC With the peach emoji at its all-time high, it’s no wonder we’re looking for new ways to get our booties into shape. The only question is, how exactly do you do that? Sure, there are squats, but what else? If you’ve been wondering how to work your butt, you’ll be glad to know that some of the industry’s top trainers shared their favorite glutes workouts to take any old sweat sesh up a notch. In other words, keep scrolling to learn how to tone, tighten, and lift your cheeks with the exercises below. Single leg glute bridges Flywheel master instructor Kara Liotta and co-founder of Tone It Up Katrina Scott agree, you simply can’t go wrong with single leg glute bridges. To perform the exercise, begin on your back and bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor with your knees over your ankles. “Lift your hips three inches off of the floor and slightly round your tailbone under,” instructs Liotta. “This is

How to have safe sex (and a fulfilling sex life) when you have an STI

May 29, 2019 at 09:00AM by CWC When it comes to Things You Never Want to Hear Your Doctor Say, “Your STI test came back positive” is right up there with “I’ve never seen something like this before!” Sexually transmitted infections are popularly cast as boogeymen of the bedroom—and considering all the damage having one can (supposedly) do to your sex life, receiving a diagnosis might as well come with a free chastity belt. On a Reddit thread titled, “Redditors with STDs, how have they affected your life?,” one woman describes the emotional tailspin in which she found herself: “When I was diagnosed with genital warts [HPV], my self-esteem plummeted to nothing. I thought that was it. I remember feeling disgusting, and like no one would ever want to be with me again.” At least one pro contends this woman’s experience and feelings are an unfortunate result of unnecessary negative socialization. “In our culture, STIs are often presented as a dark side of sex and punishment for having sex,” says therapist and sexuality expert Kathryn Stamoulis, PhD. Just think back to sex ed: “Instead of giving people the facts about HPV (human papillomavirus)—an incredibly common STI—we blow up slides of untreated genital warts and project them on massive screens during sex ed. Most outbreaks are very mild, but they’re made to look scary and disgusting,” she says. “It’s time to start accepting STIs as a normal part of human sexuality and not an aberration,” —Oluwatosin Goje, OB/GYN While reactions and

Dermatologists don’t go a day without recommending these acne-friendly SPFs

May 29, 2019 at 08:37AM by CWC No matter what kind of skin you have, putting on sunscreen should be as much of a part of your routine as putting on pants (or like, a dress if that’s more your jam). As in, you shouldn’t ever leave the house for the day before you do it… or else you risk some pretty serious (albeit very different) consequences. And yes—this rule applies no matter what type of skin you have. I know, I know: If you’ve got oily or acne-prone skin, the concept of rubbing a greasy layer of product on top of it every morning is incredibly unappealing and can feel like you’re causing one problem while preventing another—i.e. causing acne while trying to keep UV damage at bay. But like it or not, you need it. The good news? The right products will stave off sunburns without leaving pimples in their place. “Everyone, regardless of skin type, needs to wear sunscreen every single day,” says Supergoop founder Holly Thaggard, noting that it’s arguably more important for someone with acne-prone skin to slather on SPF, because many ingredients found in topical acne products make your skin more sun sensitive. And if you’ve got old acne scars, studies have shown that UVB is enemy number one, so your best bet is to cover them up with something strong and protective. Plus, utilizing sunscreen is one of the key tools to fighting development of skin cancer (short of staying out of the

Use the “10-10-10 method” to know if something is worth your worry

May 29, 2019 at 08:25AM by CWC I tend to let myself worry about everything. This wasn’t always the case, but something changed as I got older. It could be a dozen unread emails in my inbox, a disagreement with my partner, or simply finding a trustworthy friend to watch my dog for a long weekend, and still feelings of dread creep from the back of my mind. I know it’s not worth losing sleep over every little thing, but I wish I knew how to worry less and tame toxic thoughts. The Life Pro Tips subreddit always comes through with game-changing advice, and one user recently posted a whammy to help worriers. The next time something is bothering you, use the 10-10-10 method: “Will it matter in 10 days? 10 months? 10 years? After getting some perspective, you’ll notice how very few things end up worth stressing over.” And it’s true. How many times have you looked back and laughed over how much energy you put into worry about something that had little consequence for the future? Most of what you’re stressing about now won’t make much of a difference in your life, and so it’s not worth your time now. When you stop worrying about the small things, you’ll actually have the energy to tackle the big things that will matter in 10 days, 10 months, and/or 10 years. Just the thought of sloughing off the weight of my worries is already making me feel a lot lighter.

Why reaching a big goal can feel like a letdown

May 29, 2019 at 06:54AM by CWC After working for years on two major book projects, librarian and editor Ray P. felt a sense of relief when they were coming to an end. The work was over and he could finally relax. But it wasn’t long until that sense of relief turned into uneasiness. “I felt restless, a bit depressed, and curious as to what I would be working on next to keep feeling productive or busy,” he says. I felt similarly after publishing my first book last year. After years of working on it, I felt a rush of satisfaction when I walked into a Barnes & Noble and saw my book on the shelf. But then, as I looked at all the blank space in my once-packed schedule, I thought, “Now what?” I didn’t feel relaxed and free; I felt lost and unaccomplished, despite seeing the fruits of my labor right in front of me in black and white. This, I soon found out, is pretty normal (phew!). Some people experience a lackluster feeling of emptiness after accomplishing a major, long-term goal. Author Kelsey Ramsden calls this unpleasant lack of fulfillment after reaching your milestone a “success hangover.” But it’s not all bad. Once you’ve identified those post-accomplishment blues, you can learn to use them to your advantage. Why we feel blah after crossing the finish line In her book, Ramsden argues that ambitious people often prefer the race over the finish line. She writes that “it’s in
