I didn’t think I liked tie-dye until Etsy convinced me to get twisted

May 09, 2019 at 05:13AM by CWC I am a minimalist at heart, but I still experience the occasional moment when I need to be the most. It’s is a good year to be alive for that because there’s no stopping the tie-dye design trend in home decor. “2019 is the year of maximalism, so it only makes sense that modern trends are pulling inspiration from the ‘70s—a decade full of textures, colors, and patterns,” says Etsy’s trend expert Dana Isom Johnson. Tie-dye started to pop up on on the runways of designers Proenza Schouler, Stella McCartney, and Christian Dior. The print has since made its way into workout clothes (see: The Upside, Athleta, and Spiritual Gangster) and now, it’s coming for home decor. The term “tie-dye home decor” has been searched 267K times on Etsy in the past three months. My first exposure to tie-dye was in middle school. Inexplicably, every year we would do a DIY tie-dye T-shirt. (We also learned how to churn butter. Is this a normal childhood experience or was this just growing up in Oregon?) They never had any black dye, which really shook me to my Hot Topic-devoted core. I settled for soaking my shirt for as long possible in the deep blues and purples. It would have been just plain embarrassing to listen to Evanescence in a colorful tie-dye T-shirt. Luckily, I have evolved. And so has the tie-dye design trend. 2019’s take on tie-dye is very much like Taylor Swift’s new

Ulta honestly has the best shower products, and not one is over $15

May 09, 2019 at 05:00AM by CWC Since I have my skin-care routine on lock by now, most of the beauty experimenting that I do happens in the shower. So when it comes to my shower beauty regimen, I get wild and am constantly cycling through different body washes, body lotions, scrubs, soaps—and the list goes on. One peek behind my shower curtain and you’ll find clouds of bubbles or even remnants of coffee, cacao, or Himalayan salt lining the tub, all in the name of research. And…I don’t hate it. One of the best places to score all these concoctions to try out? Ulta. For your shower enjoyment, I’ve rounded up my favorite personal care products from the beauty mecca that don’t top $15. Photo: Pursoma Pursoma Flawless Flora Body Polish, $15 The luxe bath and shower brand just launched in Ulta stores, which is majorly good news. This beautifully-smelling hibiscus body scrub uses the flower to rejuvenate and strengthen the skin. Photo: Mario Badescu Mario Badescu A.H.A. Botanical Body Soap, $8 I love a good chemical exfoliant, and this one works wonders on a flaky bod (or a bod covered in dead skin cells from the driest month). It’s got exfoliating fruit extracts that slough off all of that roughness to reveal baby-soft skin. Photo: Iroha Iroha Repairing Peach Foot Mask Socks, $9 I know these are funky, but hear me out: I slip these on post-shower as I’m doing my long skin-care routine. Once 15 minutes are up, I

These genius sunscreens will let you re-apply without messing up your makeup

May 09, 2019 at 05:00AM by CWC My vampire, winter-loving self has recently gotten a wakeup call: The sun is out. Long gone are the beautiful gray days that cold weather brings (AKA my fave), and daily sunscreen is an absolute must (as, admittedly, it should be 365 days of the year). As pretty much any dermatologist will tell you, re-applying sunscreen throughout the day is just as important as putting it on in the morning, which raises a frustrating conundrum: How are you supposed to get that additional does sunscreen on your face if you’re wearing makeup? I find it super easy to add the SPF step to my morning routine as I’m getting ready—I can just choose from a makeup primer with SPF in it, an SPF-spiked moisturizer, or a regular ol’ layer of sunscreen right underneath my makeup. But reapplying midday isn’t as much of a no-brainer, because by nature it requires messing up your makeup. After all, nothing quite destroys your perfectly finessed “no-makeup makeup” look by slapping on a whole bunch of thick, white lotion. Your highlighter, mascara, and lipstick don’t even stand a chance. Thanks to some seriously genius innovations in the SPF world of late, though, there are now sunscreens that are perfect for spritzing or brushing or slathering onto your skin on top of your makeup—without transforming your look from pristine to a Dali painting. Below, I’ve rounded up the perfect sunscreens that you can wear over your makeup, regardless of whether you’ll

Checks+Balanced: What a 27-year-old in Chicago making $103K spends on wellness—while planning her wedding

May 09, 2019 at 03:00AM by CWC Even in a world where questions about menstrual cups and the ins and outs of sex are completely (and blessedly) normal, somehow the ever-ubiquitous use of money remains a touchy subject for many. People want to live their healthiest life ever, but—#realtalk—it can add up. Have you ever wondered how your colleague who makes less than you do (or so you think) can afford to buy a $5 matcha and a $12 chopped salad every day? Or how your friend’s budget allows her to hit up $34 fitness classes three times a week? It’s enough to make anyone want to ask, “Ummm, excuse me. How do you afford that?!?” That’s where Well+Good’s monthly series Checks+Balanced comes in. By lifting the thick, tightly drawn curtain to expose how much women of varying income brackets spend on wellness, we’re spreading transparency and hopefully providing some inspo that’s possible to copy. Because no matter how much you make, it’s possible to cultivate healthy habits that work within your budget. This month, meet Kayla, a communications specialist living in Chicago who makes $103,000 a year. She’s also a part-time fitness instructor who’s in the midst of planning her wedding, so living her healthiest life is a big priority—and her budget reflects that.  Here, a 27-year-old communications specialist and HIIT instructor shares how she spends on wellness. Graphic: Well+Good Creative Kayla, 27, corporate-communications specialist and fitness instructor, Chicago Salary: $103,360 per year: $100,000 annually from the full-time job, plus $280 per month as a fitness
