If your time spent on the toilet is longer than your last relationship, here’s how to find some regularity

July 07, 2019 at 06:30PM by CWC Ever since I can remember, I’ve struggled with occasional digestive flare-ups that cause me to spend extended periods of time in the bathroom. As a self-proclaimed healthy-ish person who cares about most of the food I consume (I whip up a mean lunch salad, I won’t lie), I’ve never been able to pinpoint the specific problem that occasionally disrupts my digestive tract. I try and hit all the food groups, I attend my weekly cycling classes, so why does my stomach decide to fight back every now and then? With guidance from Maggie Michalczyk, a Chicago-based registered dietitian, I finally realized the missing piece: I haven’t been eating enough fiber. Yep, the key to reducing my one-on-one time with the toilet is actually just being a bit more intentional with what I put into my body. Turns out, there are different types of fiber—and that’s important. “Soluble fiber binds with the water in the gut and promotes a healthy digestive system,” explains Michalczyk. “Insoluble fiber passes through the digestive system mostly intact, not binding with water, and acting more to speed up the passage of waste in the system.” ad_intervals[‘400216_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘400216_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Photo: Maggie Michalczyk To nourish my digestive system with the proper amount and type of fiber—this can range from 25-40 grams a day depending on your age and gender, FYI—Michalczyk recommends loading up on foods rich in soluble fiber, which include

As the ultimate dramatic-eye enhancer that features a dual-sided brush, it lifts and separates each lash for extra doe-eyed-ness. But you can’t rock a night-out look without making sure it lasts until face-washing time, which is where Lawless Setting Powder comes into play. The talc-free, translucent powder locks in all the clean-beauty magic,

The old cliche of counting sheep to fall asleep actually works really well—here’s why

July 07, 2019 at 02:03PM by CWC At 10 p.m. on the dot, I crawl into my cozy-soft $15 sheets, shut the lights off, and make mental bets with myself about how long it will take to reach REM. Sometimes I’m out “like a light” (à la Travis Scott feat. Drake); other times, I stare at the inside of my eyelids for hour after hour. Ever since I was a kid, one method for hitting the hay has worked like a charm: counting sheep. Allow me to be super specific here. When I say that I’m “counting sheep,” I mean conjuring little sheep in my mind and watching them jump over a fence with a serene pastoral backdrop. As each one lands in the grass, I mentally whisper “one sheep, two sheep, three sheep”—and so on. On an average night, the farm in my mind features a numerous flock. But hey, I get to sleep ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. “Counting sheep can help to calm the mind because it gives you a specific and neutral focus.” —Stephen Sokole, founder of Journey Meditation Counting sheep is really just a tool for hushing your inner-monologue, which is why its so gosh darn calming, explains meditation teacher Stephen Sokole, founder of Journey Meditation. “Counting sheep can help to calm the mind because it gives you a specific and neutral focus,” he says, “which allows the busy, active mind to settle down.” The practice itself appears across many traditions of meditation. For example, in Zen, it’s called “susokukan,”

This summer’s eclipses may feel like time travel back to the year 2000

July 07, 2019 at 01:00PM by CWC With two eclipses happening in July, it’s the kind of month where old issues are likely to pop up again—specifically, those from back in the year 2000, says astrologer Jennifer Racioppi. So cue the NSYNC, because it’s time to relive the turn of the century, to close the chapter on decades-old problems once and for all.  Last week’s solar eclipse was the first of two this month, and July 9 marks the halfway point of the two eclipses. (It is also the date of the quarter moon, the midpoint between last week’s new moon and next week’s full moon.)  Eclipses act like brooms, sweeping away the old aspects of our life, and making room for fresh beginnings. This cycle closes out chapters that began in July of 2000. Eclipses act like brooms, sweeping away the old aspects of our life, and making room for fresh beginnings. This cycle closes out chapters that began in July of 2000. Eclipses command our attention and bring the shadows into the light. They clear through old stories and patterns that no longer serve you, while inviting what’s yet to come. Because of this, you want to stay aware, giving yourself space to decompress, while simultaneously paying close attention to your emotions. If you can, under-schedule yourself. ad_intervals[‘406224_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘406224_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); The waxing quarter moon, meanwhile, happens at 16 degrees of Libra at 6:54 a.m. on July 9. 10 date ideas that’ll bring the butterflies back when your relationship feels routine

July 07, 2019 at 12:00PM by CWC In the early stages of a relationship, even the most mundane activities seem like romantic things to do. Nights in binge-watching TV are a chance to cozy up. Going to the neighborhood sushi restaurant twice a week is cute because it becomes “your spot.” But after a while, those same things may start to feel snoozy and predictable. One way to bring back the sizzle factor? Get out of your comfort zone and do something adventurous together. That’s right: Rose-petal bubble baths aren’t actually the fastest route to romance, despite what dozens of romcoms would have us believe. “Even in long-term relationships, you can hack your brain to feel fluttery, in-love feelings with your partner by doing activities together that are novel, new, or even anxiety-provoking,” says Lisa Marie Bobby, PhD, founder and clinical director at Growing Self Counseling and Coaching in Broomfield, CO. (This immediately explains all those bungee-jumping dates on The Bachelorette.) ad_intervals[‘404860_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404860_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Activities like these aren’t just about beating boredom—novelty stimulates the release of dopamine, a brain chemical involved in that top-of-the-world, skipping-through-the-streets, song-in-your-heart feeling of falling in love. “Dopamine keeps love fresh and new,” says Dr. Bobby. So it makes sense that if you want to keep that sensation alive, it’s important to do things together that flood your brain with this feel-good chemical. The result: sustained attraction, inspiring conversation, and good memories. Below are 10 unexpectedly

This hardcore leg workout is worthy of a World Cup Champion—and will leave your lower body burning

July 07, 2019 at 10:31AM by CWC Real talk: Seeing team USA win the 2019 Women’s World Cup was the biggest leg-day inspiration of all time. There’s nothing like watching a group of badass females break a world record (they scored a casual 26 goals over the course of the tournament) to make you think “hmm, maybe those squats are worth it after all.” Ready to hone your skills and feel strong enough to rival Alex Morgan? This workout has got you covered. Here,  Gold’s Gym Certified Personal Trainer and GOLD’S AMP Coach Ally McKinney, shares her favorite leg moves that will turn you into a soccer superstar—or at least, leave your lower body on fire for two full days after you leave the gym.   Back squat ad_intervals[‘401044_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘401044_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); “Back squats are a fantastic way to increase overall leg strength because it really forces our quad group and glute group to work and recruit all the muscle fibers,”McKinney says. “Soccer players are known for their beautiful quads so adding in back squats are going to give you exactly that.” Start by resting an empty squat bar between your traps so it isn’t putting pressure on your spine. Bring your feet shoulder width apart with your feet slightly turned out, and squeeze your glutes while bracing your core. As you bend your knees, drop your hips toward your heels and keep your chest up—try to get so low so that your

8 traditional hot yoga studios for working up a serious sweat in New York City

July 07, 2019 at 10:00AM by CWC There’s nothing quite like that feeling when you walk out of a Bikram yoga class: You’re totally sweaty and spent, but you feel renewed—and, dare we say it, a little bit buzzed? If you’re not familiar with Bikram, it’s a series of 26 postures and two pranayama, or breathing, exercises done in a heated room. (Bikram’s creator, Bikram Choudhury, left the United States in 2016 following a series of sexual assault charges, so many studios are taking his name off their class schedules, choosing to call the practice “traditional hot yoga,” or something similar, instead.) While the moves may be the same, what sets one class apart from the next are the awesome, supportive, educational, and inspirational teachers at the studio. Whether you’re new to traditional hot yoga or have an established practice, and whether you live in New York City or are visiting, we’re saving you from the need to drown in reviews: Here are a dozen great Bikram studios near you. ad_intervals[‘406161_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘406161_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); Bode NYC The studio says it opened as Manhattan’s first Bikram studio in 1999.
