6 healthy reasons why salmon is a staple of practically every eating plan out there

August 05, 2019 at 04:02AM by CWC Salmon has been a healthy go-to for what feels like forever, and it’s a decadent and versatile one at that. It’s the kind of food that’s tasty at all hours of the day: Brunch gets fancy in no time with a classic lox plate or smoked salmon frittata. A take on coconut salmon for weeknight dinner hits differently. Known for its omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is a great protein option that helps improve brain health, protects against inflammation, and can decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. No wonder it’s a staple of the Mediterranean diet, which prioritizes all of those things. It’s also why the fish comes highly recommended from Amy Shaprio, RD and founder of Real Nutrition. (If you’re not vegan or vegetarian, of course.) Here are some of the benefits of salmon that prove why it should earn a spot in your weekly meal rotation. ad_intervals[‘412873_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘412873_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); 1. It’s a key source of brain-supporting omega-3 fatty acids And the gold medal goes to… In all seriousness, salmon is a heavy-hitter in terms of omega-3 fatty acids. We’re not able to produce the essential fatty acids by ourselves, so we have to look to our diet. Specifically, the oily fish contains EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, which help to decrease inflammation, protect your heart and your brain. “It helps to keep the integrity of the fattier areas of the brain,”

Use your Mars sign to get quick and dirty sex tips, courtesy of the stars

August 05, 2019 at 03:00AM by CWC My Mars sign is in Cancer, which meant, oh, just about zilch to me until I learned about The Mars Factor, the online platform that merges astrology and sexuality. Turns out that a person’s Mars sign is what determines sexual desires, astrologically speaking. And, as I’m always finding ways to up my pleasure quotient (in bed, socially, or even via a gigantic plate of mozzarella sticks), I was curious to see how leaning into my Mars reading could rock my world. Per the platform, my Mars sign points to me valuing trust and safety when it comes to sexual play, and having my emotions tuned in for the experience. I can amp up my solo time by checking in with my emotional state first. And once I can affirm that I feel safe and deep in (self)-love, things can get…kinky. Okay, certainly interesting, but—waitaminute…why wouldn’t my Venus sign explain how I act and what I prefer beneath the sheets, given that Venus is the goddess of love? Well, as many deadbeat guitar players unknowingly taught me while I was navigating my early twenties, sex and love aren’t the same thing. What’s more is that Mars is symbolic of our more aggressive, and shall we say passionate emotions, astrologer and co-founder of the Mars Factor Nadine Jane tells me. ad_intervals[‘407466_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘407466_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); “Mars is the planet of energy, action, anger, and desire,” Jane says.

From a young age, she filled up pages of diaries and read as many books as she could, imagining herself as the author. Fast-forward to today and not

This is the perfect week to find love, astrologically—here’s why

August 04, 2019 at 03:19PM by CWC The week ahead brings some of the sweetest, but also complicated, aspects we’ll see this summer. It’s a highly evolutionary week. Let’s start with the sweet! The sun and Venus, which travel close to one another in the sign of Leo, make a beautiful trine to Jupiter in Sagittarius. Yes. This positive alignment boasts the expansion of love and growth. It adds ease and beauty to the cosmic atmosphere. A trine represents an angle of manifestation. Venus and Jupiter are planets that correlate with good luck, good fortune, growth, and love. The blended energy of the sun, Venus, and Jupiter—all in fire signs—provides momentum and positive opportunities to experience motivation. To sweeten the pot, Jupiter—the planet that represents good luck, good fortune, and abundance—stations direct on Sunday, August 11, after a multi-month retrograde journey, too. With July in our rearview mirror, and the dust from the eclipses and Mercury in retrograde now beginning to settle, allow this week of peak summer vibes to provide you with healing—especially for love and money. ad_intervals[‘412859_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘412859_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); The moon waxes in Libra—a sign that Venus rules—on Monday and Tuesday. The moon in Libra, known for balance, asks us to nourish and nurture our relationships. Vacation season in full effect means that work could potentially feel slow this week. If so, take advantage. Get that phone call in to your parents or your godparents that you’ve needed

If you’re hungry for a bedtime snack, a banana is your best bet

August 04, 2019 at 02:00PM by CWC Picture this: Here you are rummaging through your kitchen at 10 p.m. looking for a bedtime snack. You’re hungry, but can’t stop doing that thing where you dead-stare into the fridge as you contemplate what you “should” eat. We’ll save you some time and brain power: Grab a banana. Yes, a banana. Why is a banana before bed a good snack? First of all, banish those misconceptions that all late-night food is a bad idea. “Going to bed too hungry can disrupt the quality of your sleep, just the same as going to bed too full,” says Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CEO and founder of NY Nutrition Group in New York City. A piece of fruit can be the perfect antidote to late-night tummy rumbles because it’s light while still offering filling nutrients like fiber. ad_intervals[‘412430_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘412430_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); As for bananas, they have very specific properties that make them perfectly suited for nighttime nibbling. For one, the fruit contains tryptophan, Moskowitz says. Tryptophan is an amino acid that helps increase to production of serotonin, which can help calm and relax you, says Moskovitz. Serotonin is also a precursor to melatonin (meaning that it helps make melatonin), the neurotransmitter that helps you feel sleepy. Bananas do a double-whammy at bedtime because of their carb count—per the The National Sleep Foundation (NSF), carbohydrates help ferry tryptophan into the brain where it can get to work to up

What your teeth-brushing style says about you, according to me (and a dentist)

August 04, 2019 at 12:00PM by CWC Lately, I’ve been much more diligent about my oral-care routine. I’m talking brushing, flossing, the whole nine yards I should have been doing since I first learned the basics for how to brush your teeth. Better late than never, right? Anyway, with my newfound appreciation for my pearly whites in mind, I was extra interested when my co-workers recently debated the best order of operations for water and toothpaste application for how to brush your teeth. Is it toothpaste, rinse? Rinse, toothpaste? Rinse, toothpaste, rinse? I drew a total blank, realizing I’ve never considered the thought and couldn’t remember how I do it every day, twice a day, per the American Dental Association. How do I brush my teeth, I wondered? And, more importantly, am I doing it…wrong? Despite having been subject to countless demonstrations courtesy of dental hygienists over the last couple decades, I’ve never thought about whether the order in which I paste-up might matter. I mean, I know there are plenty of factors that do matter—like storing your brush properly so it dries well and doesn’t kiss bristles with any neighboring brushes, and not sharing brushes with anyone else, and not opting for charcoal paste. But water-pasting order? No clue. ad_intervals[‘412445_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘412445_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Below, check out what your water-pasting brush order says about your personality. And then, more importantly, what’s actually optimal for your oral health, according to a dentist. Rinse
