September 19, 2019 at 10:30PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV93_CA35mI] Paleo bread is possible thanks to this delicious recipe. “Help, I’m eating so much avocado toast,” is a real Slack message I sent to one of my coworkers the other day. I had gone to Trader Joe’s while hungry, and bought a loaf of bread—a rare occurrence for me, since I typically follow a grain-free lifestyle. But on the other hand, bread is delicious, especially with avocado on top. I miss it in my everyday life. Thankfully, I can now have my toast and eat it too with this grain-free, inflammation-fighting Paleo bread recipe, courtesy of chefs Mia Rigden and Jenny Dorsey. “To enjoy Paleo bread, you don’t have to be a hardcore Paleo person,” Rigden says on the latest episode of Well+Good’s Alt-Baking Bootcamp series. “What I like about it is you’re getting some protein and there aren’t any refined carbohydrates or grains that are going to spike your blood sugar levels.” Beyond being gluten-free, the Paleo bread they make has some major health benefits. One of the key ingredients to get the alt-flour mixture right is flaxseed. “Ground flaxseeds, and flaxseeds in general, are super high in fiber which is great for your digestion,” Rigden explains. “It also helps to keep us full and it’s a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are highly anti-inflammatory.” So not only are you avoiding potentially inflammatory substances, you’re upping the ante by incorporating an ingredient that fights back against inflammation. There are 7 different types of rest—this quiz reveals which you need right now
September 19, 2019 at 09:22PM by CWC I always smash the “Like” button when a photo of a cushy twinkle-light adorned bedroom ends up in my Instagram feed because like, oh, everyone, I can only dream of getting more rest. Finding an hour to unwind in my (crumb-filled, device-cluttered) bed at night is a privilege, not a right, you know? And if you’re trying to maximize the quality of your rest time since who has the time, you might be interested in this: there are seven different types of rest, and you can find out right now which is best for you. In her book Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity, internal medicine physician Saundra Dalton-Smith, MD, addresses the seven types of rest her clients frequently require. As you probably know by now, rest and sleep are not mutually exclusive, so that’s why it splinters off into so many different facets. And if you hate spoilers, heed the next few lines! Which type of rest do you need right now? Physical: Resting to relieve the body of physical stress, such as muscle tension, headaches, and a lack of sleep. Mental: Resting to silence your anxious mind and refocus to the things that are important Spiritual: Resting to tune into your spiritual beliefs and higher power. Emotional: Resting so you’ll be able to express genuine feelings and nix people-pleaser tendencies. Social: Resting so you can recognize which relationships are replenishing, and limit exposure to energy vampires and
I was never a fragrance person until I smelled this one perfume
September 19, 2019 at 09:05PM by CWC I’m so *extra* with my entire beauty routine (just ask my friends that have seen my beauty cabinet) but the one thing I’ve completely skipped altogether, surprisingly, is fragrance. My first foray into fragrance came by way of Jessica Simpson’s Fancy Eau De Parfum, which was a Christmas present from an ex-boyfriend and… not exactly me. Ever since then, it’s a beauty category I’ve more or less ignored. Then Dedcool came across my desk. Once I spritzed their Fragrance 01 Taunt ($80) onto my wrist, it was like everything around me became muted, my eyeballs turned into hearts, and my brain started buzzing with endorphins thanks to an overload of delicious smells. I was like a cat catching its first whiff of catnip. And I’ve smelled a lot of fragrances as a beauty editor—never have I had this sort of overwhelming reaction before. Now, I can’t leave the house without spritzing it on, and stick my wrist in everyone’s face that I can to get them to smell it, too (sorry guys!!). Taunt’s enticing concoction is made with bergamot, amber, fresh dew, and vanilla, which blend together to hit your senses like a delightful punch. Honestly, Taunt gives me a nose orgasm. I asked Dedcool founder Carina Chaz—an LA native who started the brand at age 21—how she came up with the scent, and she called it an “emulation” of her 16-year-old self breaking out of her “boyish phase.” “At that point in my
I’m ready for a promotion—how can I convince my boss?
September 19, 2019 at 07:00PM by CWC One of the grave injustices of the working world is that raises and promotions aren’t automatically awarded to smart, hardworking employees who are good at their jobs. As career expert Amy Odell—whom you may know as the former editor of Cosmopolitan.com and founding blogger of New York magazine’s The Cut—sees it, it’s much more of a numbers game than you may realize. In this week’s Good@Work column, she breaks down the best way to make the case that it’s time for you to move to the next wrung of the ladder. Question: I’ve been in my current position for two years now and I feel like I’m ready for a promotion. In the past few months, I’ve taken on more responsibilities and I’ve only gotten positive feedback from my boss. Considering annual reviews are around the corner, do you have advice on how I can make the best case that I deserve this? Answer: Promotions are the result of a number of factors, some of which are directly about you and some of which have nothing to do with you. Yes, you need to be able to handle the responsibilities that come with advancing, and you need to have earned your place there by being a hardworking employee with a professional manner. But no matter how amazing you are, the company needs to have the resources to promote you. They’ll have to allocate budget for your promotion: They’ll need to give you a raise and
5 foods that rev up your metabolism, according to a dietitian
September 19, 2019 at 06:17PM by CWC Having a speedy metabolism is most commonly talked about in terms of weight loss, but the truth is, it’s linked to all sorts of benefits, like having a lower risk for diabetes and chronic inflammation. There’s a whole heck of a lot that affects how fast or slow your metabolism is, including age, workout habits, and—oh, right—what you eat. You might already know that fiber-rich greens are metabolism all-stars, but according to registered dietitian Frances Largeman-Roth, RD, there are plenty of other foods that boost metabolism. Th best foods that boost metabolism 1. Jalapeños According to Largeman-Roth, hot peppers like jalapeños and cayenne can give metabolism a temporary boost. This is because they increase the amount of heat the body is producing, which in turn burns calories. This is called diet-induced thermogenesis and is a process backed up by science. 2. chia seeds “Chia seeds contain ALA—alpha linolenic acid—which helps boost metabolism,” Largeman-Roth says. ALA is an omega-3 fatty acid and part of its job is to destroy “plaque” that builds up within arteries. It’s ability to lower blood pressure and cholesterol make it a metabolism win. 3. hemp seeds This is another healthy, ALA-containing food, according to Largeman-Roth. “Try sprinkling chia or hemp seeds over cereal and salads, or look for them in protein bars,” she says. 4. oats According to Largemen-Roth, foods with resistant starch—a type of carbohydrates that acts like fiber—are also linked with revving up metabolism. And it’s something
I’m a relationship therapist, and I follow 4 rules to keep my marriage healthy
September 19, 2019 at 06:04PM by CWC If you want to know how to have a healthy relationship, makes sense to ask people who seem to have them, right? Sure, but practicing what you preach is no small feat: We tell our friends to communicate openly with their partner but let our own resentment stew over time. We tell a coworker not to let wedding planning cause arguments at home but throw a hissy fit when our fiancé suggests salmon as a dinner option. We tell anyone with ears not to go back to their ex, but our 1 a.m. Instagram DMs tell a different story as to what we actually believe. But then again, not all of us are relationship therapists, right? Knowing how to have a healthy relationship is something many people claim to be able to do, but it may be most wise to put our faith in an expert. So, below, get four tips straight from the source, sex and relationship therapist Tammy Nelson, PhD, who shares the four specific rules by which she abides to keep her own marriage healthy. 1. Maintain an active sex life It’s easy to fall into a habit of passing out while watching The Crown in bed. After all, sustaining the same level of horniness common to the honeymoon phase is pretty tough. Still, keeping that connection (and excitement) alive means closing your laptop every once in a a while. “He and I both agree that when we are maintaining
This makeup artist trick will make your lashes look five times thicker—no mascara required
September 19, 2019 at 06:00PM by CWC There’s a lot most of us are willing to do in pursuit of more luxurious eyelashes. Between lash lifts, lash extensions, lash serums, false lashes, and good old-fashioned mascara, there’s clearly no shortage of options out there to help women get the longer, fuller and lashes of their dreams. But you actually don’t need to shell out hundreds of dollars on semi-permanent treatments or invest in a pricey mascara to get the job done: All you really need is a steady hand and a little bit of eyeliner. Enter “tightlining,” which involves lining the upper rim of your eye (aka the waterline beneath your top lashes) with eyeliner, and will instantly make your lashes look fuller and thicker “It makes you look like you have more lashes than you actually do,” says makeup artist Allyson Wisel. “It accentuates the eyes.” And though it might sound intense, it’s shockingly easy to do on your own. To get the look (and fool everyone you know grab either a black or brown eye pencil—Wisel is a fan of Milani Supreme Kohl ($6) and Cargo Swimmables ($18)—and apply it “connect the dots” style. Dab on a few small strokes of liner as close to the lash as possible, then connect them to get your thickest and most efficient line. Leave your lower waterline liner-free in order to give your top lashes an added element of oomph. While tightlining undoubtedly works wonders on its own (I tried it for myself,
The world’s most famous hairstylist taught me how to wash my hair the right way
September 19, 2019 at 05:56PM by CWC In the hair industry, you’d be hard-pressed to find a name more recognizable than Frédéric Fekkai’s. He’s the godfather of the modern hair salon, he managed to bring luxury haircare to the masses via his namesake line (which you’ve likely on the shelves of your local drugstore), and, in what is perhaps my favorite claim to fame of his, has cut the hair of none other than Hilary Clinton. So when Frédéric Fekkai—a true beauty legend, no matter how you slice it—serves up haircare advice, suffice to say it’s worth listening to. This morning, he hosted a group of editors for a fireside chat in his Soho salon to celebrate the launch of his first ever foray into natural haircare, called Frédéric Fekkai The One: Pure, and schooled us all in the most basic of hair practices: how to wash it the right way. While it may seem simple, washing your hair is really the first step in your styling process—everything you do to your hair outside of the shower depends on what you do in the shower, so you certainly want to do it correctly. “The right way to do the shampoo is actually not to put it on the hair,” he says (cue jaw drop). “Put just enough [product] in your palm, and then apply it only on your scalp.” He explains that you don’t need to worry about lathering up the entirety of your strands, because the water will do the
‘I’m a dancer, and these are the 3 no-no-no’s of stretching your hamstrings’
September 19, 2019 at 04:55PM by CWC I have a rocky relationship with hamstring stretching (see: the yoga butt incident of 2018). Unwinding the tight group of muscles running up the backs of your legs can make all of your everyday movements feel more effortless, but getting the hang of how can be tricky. That’s why I asked Donna Flagg, a dancer and stretching instructor at Broadway Dance Center, to coach me through proper techniques. Apparently, there are three things you should never (like, ever) do when you’re stretching your hamstrings. “The world is divided into people who believe they were born inflexible and always will be, and those who stretch but don’t understand why their flexibility does not improve,” she tells me. If you find yourself struggling with forward-fold or (trying) to do the splits, then Flagg wants you to listen up. Simple as it may seam, tweaking your form just slightly can lead to big results. Ready for smarter hamstring stretching? Watch out for these 3 common mistakes. 1. Don’t: Buckle foward “In an effort to go farther and touch their toes, people bend their knees, making it more likely that they will touch the floor,” says Flagg. While nothing’s inherently wrong with that, the problem arises if you buckle and slacken the whole back of your leg. Meaning, your hamstrings won’t get stretched out and you’re compromising the health of your needs. Do this instead: To keep your entire lower chain safe, contract the muscles around your kneecaps.
