This science-y new skin-care subscription can predict what your skin needs

September 02, 2019 at 01:00PM by CWC In the world of skin care,  it often feels like we’re playing catch-up. We only hydrate our skin after it starts to feel dry, or treat our pimples after they’ve popped their pesky little heads above the surface. In other words, we wait for our skin to tell us what it needs, and then we find a product to fix it. But a new line of subscription, customized serums, called Atolla, is about to flip that idea on its head. The brand—which launched on August 13th—uses data about your skin health, history, and lifestyle to develop a custom serum to keep you glowing… and predict any sorts of issues that might pop up before they happen. “Think of fitting your skin as being fitted for a couture gown—you can buy some lovely things off the rack, but for the ultimate fit, something that is made just for you cannot be beat,” says the brand’s co-founder dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, MD. “The current strategy to look for products made for the masses can be quite successful, but there is nothing better than understanding the specific issues and concerns that are your own, and then addressing with something tailored to fit.” And Atolla’s doing it in a whole new way. ad_intervals[‘414956_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘414956_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); What serum customization looks like The concept of customized skin care is hardly new—over the last few years, dozens of brands have popped

This Pilates glutes series sculpts your butt while combatting the effects of sitting

September 02, 2019 at 01:00PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZPBLWgh9sA] Welcome to Trainer of the Month Club, our brand-new fitness series, where we tap the coolest, most in-the-know fitness leaders to create a month-long fitness challenge. On Mondays, we have our “sweat drops” where you’ll get access to the week’s workout that you can follow along at home. This week, Kimmy Kellum from East River Pilates is taking you through a sesh that focuses all on the glutes. Walking into a Pilates class, I know that my core is about to be fired up, lengthened, and stretched in all different directions. The workout is often very abs-focused, after all—but for Well+Good’s Trainer of the Month Club, East River Pilates founder and all-around goddess Kimmy Kellum is bringing us a sequence that’s all about your booty. ad_intervals[‘419666_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘419666_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); The perks of this? You’ll be sculpting your glutes, yes, but since it’s Pilates, you’re also still getting that core work, while also strengthening your legs. It’s a sweaty trifecta, and all you need is a mat. “What I love [about this workout] is that you’re tapping your glutes and your hamstrings,” says Kellum. Oh, and another thing? “It’s also awesome to help combat the negative effects of sitting for long periods of time,” she says. Check and check. Ready to try Kellum’s multi-beneficial Pilates glutes workout for yourself? Keep scrolling. The warmup 1. Squat: Take your feet as wide as your shoulders

We tried a meal delivery service that caters to keto and plant-based diets—here’s what happened

September 02, 2019 at 04:30AM by CWC As fun as it is to embrace the spontaneity of summer (AKA grabbing an ice cream cone and calling it lunch), there’s something reassuring about settling back into a routine come fall—when it’s not too hot to turn on the oven and you can actually get excited about your healthy eating habits again. In the spirit of embracing eating well, two Well+Good editors decided to turn their return to routine into a game—by challenging themselves to a week of following a completely new eating style to see if they could develop fresh (still exciting!) habits while experiencing unique flavors. (Spoiler: They did.) To do it, they hit up Green Chef, a USDA-Certified Organic company that offers meal kits catering to a variety of dietary preferences, to help them try out plant-powered and keto eating plans. ad_intervals[‘415079_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘415079_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); In addition to inciting new creativity in the kitchen, their main takeaway was how unbelievably easy everything was to prepare. You just sign up, pick the meals that look most appetizing, and bam—all the sustainably sourced, pre-portioned ingredients show up at your door, ready to be cooked and gobbled. Scroll down to hear two editors’ firsthand experiences with their week of going the meal delivery kit route. Neon bike shorts are the summer trend you’ll want to wear well past Labor Day

September 02, 2019 at 12:00AM by CWC Of all the decades, I’ve always thought the 1980’s would be immune to nostalgic trend recycling if only because the trends were, I thought, exceptionally bad—as evidenced by my mom’s hairspray-heavy Glamour shots from the era. Somehow, though, everything old and cringe-y becomes new and cool again eventually, and the ’80s have not fulfilled my prediction of being an exception. Examples of this abound.’80s workouts are back, and even the people who made them iconic, e.g. Jane Fonda, are experiencing a pop culture resurgence. Shoulder pads, power suits, windbreakers—and, well, duh—off-duty leggings are just a few resuscitated trends that could also be named offhand. Most of these I want nothing to due with, but one fad has surprisingly recruited even a skeptic like me to the cause of 1980’s revival: the neon biker short. I’m not alone, either. Athleisure icon Serena Williams recently wore bold-hued blue bike shorts (which were just shy of electric neon) to the Nike Queens of the Future event in New York, which she actually paired with an aforementioned ’80s-era windbreaker. ad_intervals[‘417170_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘417170_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); Personally, I became obsessed after seeing a group of friends all sporting a neon pair designed by Carbon 38 (shop the style below), a look which I immediately felt compelled to copycat. My new pink shorts make me feel dorky in a cool way, just as has the entirety of this summer’s long shorts trend.

September 01, 2019 at 11:22PM by CWC With a potent new moon at your back, (the new moon in Virgo happened at 6 degrees on August 30), September opens up on a productive note. The majority of planets continue to travel through earth signs, as the cosmos serve us a whopping dose of grounded energy. When the elemental emphasis sways so profoundly in the direction of the element earth, as it has now, conditions become perfect for productivity. So, set your sights on exactly what you wish to accomplish and think through what you need to succeed. You can and will get so much done, if you apply some heart-driven strategy to what you are going after. When the elemental emphasis sways so profoundly in the direction of the element earth, as it has now, conditions become perfect for productivity. On the topic of the earth element, I want to explain something significant. We are currently living in an astrological moment defined by two slow-moving planets that find themselves in very close proximity to one another in Capricorn. These two planets, Saturn and Pluto, command transformation. ad_intervals[‘420008_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘420008_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Saturn and Pluto ask for hard work, tenacity, and determination. While they travel close to one another in nose-to-the-grindstone Capricorn, their presence is hard to ignore. This combination of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn has a massive crescendo in 2020. However, we’ve felt the combination of these two titans throughout all

One woman found a surprising mental health benefit in a simple at-home manicure

September 01, 2019 at 10:01PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lEwXLMIBLI] Confession: my at-home manicure routine is mostly me painting over my chipped nail polish right before I head out the door. I’m always in a rush to do it, and it comes more from a place of necessity than self care. When everything is go-go-go, it can be difficult to remember that it’s necessary to slow down and take a breather, but I’m feeling inspired to do just that after watching the self-care ritual of Maya Feller, RDN. For her, an at-home manicure is a way to bring levity to a job that can be demanding. Feller works with patients who have diet-related chronic illness. “Because I deal with diet-related chronic illnesses, sometimes work can be serious,” she says in our latest episode of Self Care Nation. “I really do like to have a little bit of fun with my nails and make them bright and colorful. It’s just a way of showing my patients it’s not all serious.” ad_intervals[‘419785_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘419785_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); What began as a way to stretch out the length of her salon manicures (which: same) eventually evolved into a self-care practice that Feller absolutely loves. The key is in small touches, like running a diffuser with calming essential oils and using a hand cream that feels thick and luxurious. “Now that I have a family and kids it’s really interesting, because when I go to the salon everyone’s
