The Paleo diet is an inflammation-fighting super star—but it comes with some downsides

October 29, 2019 at 10:30PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGvJ61nBFBo] Bone up on your Paleo diet know-how with this video. While the first person who turned cauliflower into pizza crust deserves major accolades, other food “innovations,” like packaged foods loaded with sugars and additives, are ultimately a detriment health-wise. That’s why so many healthy eaters have adapted the Paleo way of life, eating only foods that were likely on the menu for our hunter-gatherer ancestors and nixing more “modern” foods like dairy, grains, and legumes. Surely a back-to-basics eating plan is the best way to eat, right? That question is the crux of the latest episode of You Versus Food. Host and registered dietitian Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, RD, gives the pros and cons of following the Paleo diet, along with her verdict on if it’s worth the commitment. (It’s a life without cheese; you want to be sure.) One of the major pros of Paleo, Beckerman says, is that it can lower inflammation. “Because you’re cutting out foods that have sugar, alcohol, and gluten, Paleo could potentially reduce inflammation in the body, which could mitigate the symptoms of chronic illness,” Beckerman says. Another benefit: eating whole foods (as one does on the Paleo diet) can keep blood sugar levels stable, which better regulates energy and mood. In other words, this is one eating plan that won’t leave you needing a nap later. While it has some major pros, Beckerman says there are some downsides most people don’t fully understand. “The major

I just got the manicure of the future—and it’ll change the way you do nail art forever

October 29, 2019 at 09:00PM by CWC My new manicure was 3-D printed, and looks like a more disco version of The Rainbow Fish with rainbow colored metallic scales that I can’t take my eyes off of. The futuristic design was created by the brand ManiMe, which is here to change the mani game by using 3-D printing to make nail art more accessible than Trader Joe’s latest it-food. The process began with me taking a photo of my nails held up against a card so that the computer could judge the size of my nail beds. I then got to choose from 26 (really cute) nail art options—including minimalist designs, solid colors, and different takes on the French mani and glitter and chrome—before the manicure-making robot 3-D printed my choice into a customized, laser-cut, fitted manicure. It came out on a thin card, from which you peel off the design and stick it to your nails. Et voila: I had my very own personalized manicure within minutes. It’s literally the manicure of the future— The Jetsons would be impressed. The mani that’s printed is technically a gel, but unlike the usual gels you find in the salon it’s 10-free, cruelty-free, and cured onto itself rather than your nail, which means your nails don’t get damaged in the process. It lasts for roughly 10 to 14 days, and comes off without taking your nail along with it. And the best part? You can do everything online, and your new manicure

Unleash the power of ‘live weights’ with a no-muscle-left-behind Tidal Tank workout

October 29, 2019 at 07:31PM by CWC Every effective workout needs a dash of surprise. Your favorite form of exercise might CrossFit, or dance class, or running, but your body thrives when you keep it guessing. And the Tidal Tank ($60)—a dynamic piece of gym equipment that’s basically a giant water bottle—is the plot twist your gym regimen needs. Casey Chiro, DC, a chiropractor in Los Angeles recently highlighted the Tidal Tank on Instagram. “It’s the perfect tool for functional training. It solves problematic movement patterns, prevents injuries and however you use it, it trains your entire body,” he write. Plus, it’s totally customizable. You can adjust its weight to any amount between 0 to 45 pounds depending on how much you want to train with on any given day. According to the company based in the Netherlands, Tidal tank workout movements with this piece of equipment differ from other forms of strength training. The water sloshes around as you move, creating “live weight” that your muscles won’t be able to predict. “This trains athletes to be robust, promotes muscle growth for the fitness-lover, and most of all—according to our customers—is a lot of fun,” writes Tidal Tank. If you’re game to order one, I say go for it. However, if you want to get the feel for how the workout will go first, Dr. Chiro says you can try it with one of your gym’s sandbags, a medicine ball, or free weights. When you’re ready to ditch paper towels for good, reach for these 3 reusable alternatives

October 29, 2019 at 06:00PM by CWC At least 200 paper towels die every time I decide to do a deep clean throughout my apartment. The convenience of wiping away a mess then tossing it in the trash proves tempting, but given that the United States goes through about 13 billion paper towels each year, this cleaning method isn’t exactly “convenient” for the environment—now is it? In a world where an individual’s sustainable actions matter more and more each and every day, paper towel alternatives are now on-the-rise. And well, it’s about time. If every American household found an alternative even for just one 70-sheet roll of virgin fiber paper towels, we’d save 544,000 trees each year. So just imagine what would happen if you gave up the single-use products altogether. Not only would you diminish your own environmental footprint, you would also save a lot (and I mean Benjamins) of money each year. Metaphorically speaking, you’re wiping wasted money and literal waste from your life. 3 paper towel alternatives for sustainable cleaning now until forever LOLA Wowables Reusable Paper Towel, $20 According to the company, these babies are› 350 percent more absorbent than an average roll of paper towels. Derms don’t go a day without recommending ceramides, but what are they exactly?

October 29, 2019 at 05:00PM by CWC Ask any skin-care pro which ingredient should be a top priority in your moisturizer, and you’re next to certain to hear a lot about ceramides. No lie: three consecutive derms heralded this ceramide-rich $16 moisturizer as a dry skin savior. Aside from being a word that rolls of the tongue of derms all the time (and that feels damn near impossible to spell, TBH) what are ceramides and why are they so important for keeping your skin hydrated? Ceramides are lipids that occur naturally in your skin, and make up more than 50 percent of it, according to Sheel Desai Solomon, MD, a Cary, NC dermatologist. If you think of your skin cells as bricks, the “mortar” in between them is filled with ceramides (plus cholesterol and some other fatty acids), which Rachel Nazarian, MD, a New York City dermatologist tells me is the “first line of defense” in protecting your skin from the elements. “It helps preserve the barriers of the skin and lock in moisture as well as shielding the skin from pollutants,” adds Dr. Solomon. When all of this is intact, moisture stays within skin to keep it hydrated and protected, but when it’s not, that’s when transepidermal water loss (aka when the water gets sucked out of your skin by the environment) happens. This can leave your skin feeling dry and inflamed, and it can make you more at risk for sensitivity issues like itchiness and eczema. All of

Facebook wants to be your personal health concierge—here’s what to know about the new features

October 29, 2019 at 04:44PM by CWC Facebook is a one-stop shop for creeping on your ex, connecting with your fit squad, and… staying on top of your health? Yes, the social media giant is expanding into healthcare with its latest preventive health features. On Tuesday, Facebook’s unveiled its new Preventive Health tool, which works as a digital reminder to see your doctor and help you find nearby medical practitioners. Freddy Abnousi, the head of Facebook’s healthcare research tells TechCrunch the new initiative stemmed from the fact that preventable illnesses, like influenza or heart disease (one of the leading causes of death in the U.S.), affect millions of Americans each year. Facebook worked with several health organizations to create the tool, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and the American Cancer Society.  Facebook’s Preventive Health takes recommendations on proactive healthcare from these organizations and targets specific individuals based on factors such as age and gender. Facebook users will also be able to keep track of recent medical testing and—of course—share any updates with friends (if they want). Likely anticipating that some people might be wary in light of recent privacy concerns, the company released a statement explaining how personal medical information will remain just that. “Health is particularly personal, so we took privacy and safety into account from the beginning. For example, Preventive Health allows you to set reminders for your future checkups and mark them as done, but it doesn’t

The most common things we do each day that can throw our body alignment off

October 29, 2019 at 04:00PM by CWC You take time to stretch before and after each workout, and you see your doctor regularly for check-ups. You pay attention to your posture and try to incorporate yoga to build your abdominal and back strength. Generally speaking, you feel healthy and properly aligned, but still, sometimes you have unexplained aches-and-pains. What’s up with that? If you ask Emily Kiberd, DC, founder of the Urban Wellness Clinic in New York City, the culprit could be seemingly innocent everyday activities that challenge your spine. According to her, the same way we develop positive habits, so too can our body also learns negative ones. “We are a blueprint of our actions, and most times what we do all day is not balanced,” she explains. “Imbalanced loading of certain muscles and joints can lead to repetitive strain and sprains. We become susceptible to new injuries, as well as increased likelihood of exacerbating existing issues.” So what could be to blame? These rituals that we’re all pretty much guilty of doing on the reg. Sitting all day You probably don’t need us to tell you that sitting pretty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. is bad news for your back. But in case you haven’t gotten the memo, consider this: “Sitting is the new smoking!” exclaims Kiberd. In addition to the stress it puts on your muscles, it can also compromise your ability to inhale and exhale effectively, especially if you are slouching or hunching over your
