November 26, 2019 at 09:00PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTwzed12Xk8] Check out the healthy Thanksgiving foods that this RD makes sure to prioritize on Turkey Day. Thanksgiving is to food what the Super Bowl is to football: the biggest moment of the year. What other day is exclusively reserved for cooking and eating, no other activities required? Truly a special day on the calendar for any food lover, particularly if you’re a fan of pumpkin pie and stuffing. In the latest episode of You Versus Good, registered dietitian Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, RD shares some helpful intel on how she builds her plate on Turkey Day to help balance fully enjoying your favorite Thanksgiving food without worrying about potential upset stomach later in the evening. Her first tip: get a serving of fiber ASAP. While your eyes may go straight to the stuffing, Beckerman recommends starting with a bit of salad. That way, you’ll definitely get some fiber—the key to keeping your digestive tract running properly—before you get too full and skip it altogether. (It’s a tip gastroenterologists can get behind, too.) While Beckerman emphasizes that you should absolutely dig into your Thanksgiving faves and not deprive yourself, keeping the portions moderate will keep you from overloading your stomach (hey, there’s always leftovers), and starting with salad will help prevent your eyes from being bigger than your stomach. Here’s what it truly means to follow a sustainable diet that’s good for you *and* the planet
November 26, 2019 at 07:30PM by CWC When it comes to choosing a healthy eating plan, there’s a lot of questions someone may ask themselves. Does my body feel its best without animal products? Did our ancestors have it all figured out? Can I really live without cheese? But the most pressing question in 2019: is this truly a sustainable diet? Indeed, there’s a preponderance of evidence that all of us need to change our ways in order to curb the worst effects of climate change. Just Tuesday, the UN released a damning report saying that carbon emissions continue to increase globally, and seven of the world’s biggest economies (including the US) are not doing their part to help. It doesn’t help that 10 percent of American greenhouse gas emissions come from the agricultural sector—leading many healthy eaters to wonder how their food impacts the planet. That’s where the buzzy planetary health diet, or climate diet, comes in. Introduced by 37 doctors from 16 countries in the journal The Lancet earlier in the year, it offers up a researched-backed eating plan for how to eat healthy in a way that minimally impacts the planet and ensures that it will be habitable for future generations. But given that the ground-breaking report is…incredibly long, we decided to get some practical intel on what a truly sustainable diet looks like from registered dietitian and The Conscious Dietitian blogger Sharon Palmer, RD. She breaks down the planetary health diet so that you can build
3 tips for making your skin-care routine super sustainable, according to clean-beauty maven Josie Maran
November 26, 2019 at 07:20PM by CWC Be honest: How many times have you thought that switching to a sustainable, clean skin-care routine means giving up on the next-level glow you’re chasing? Hold on to your jade roller—because according to Josie Maran, founder and CEO of Josie Maran Cosmetics, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. “We as beauty consumers have been taught that if you go green and clean you will have to sacrifice the performance of the products,” says Maran. “But this is not true anymore—people like me have committed their lives to finding better, healthier ways to create beauty with a conscience, and with quality and efficacy in mind so you can have what I call ‘chic-ological’ beauty.” (Add that to your beauty dictionary stat.) To help you kick off your earth-friendly skin-care regimen, Maran has a few sustainability tips to make the process as smooth as your future complexion. Keep scrolling for 3 skin-care sustainability tips to help give your routine a clean makeover. 1. Donate, send, or up-cycle your empty containers Before you get to the products to add to your collection, first rid yourself of the stuff you’ve already used. Through Josie Maran’s partnership with TerraCycle, you can send in your empties to be given a new life—which is crazy easy yet totally impactful. “You’re ensuring your waste will be properly recycled and that you’re doing your part to live a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle,” says Maran. But if you’d rather keep a few jars, Maran
This combo of stretching and foam rolling is all you need to have liquid legs
November 26, 2019 at 07:00PM by CWC When my legs are really sore—which is often—a mere static stretch just isn’t going to do much. To really make tight muscles go ‘ahhhhh‘ with delight, experts recommend going at them with a combination of two different methods: both stretching and foam rolling. This is especially the case with your leg muscles, since they’re prone to tightness from not only working out but sitting at a desk all day. “The best combo is to foam roll, stretch, and then perform an activation drill of the focused muscle group,” says Corinne Croce, physical therapist and co-founder of Bodyevolved. If your goal is to have liquid legs (*raises hand*), foam rolling and stretching work together as a one-two punch on your fascia—the connective tissue between your muscles—and leave the targeted area much less tense. The key thing to remember as you go through the recovery drills? “Synchronize your breathing will all movements,” says Dr. Croce. Keep scrolling for her recommended muscle relieving stretching and foam rolling combos for three of the most commonly tight muscles in your lower body. Glute 1. Foam roll the glute by placing your foam roller under one butt cheek, crossing that same leg over the other in a figure-four position. Begin rolling on the glute, finding any spots of increased tissue tension, knots, or achy spots, and work those areas using small up and down, side-to-side motions. Work each area for 30 seconds, covering the entire glute. Repeat on the other
Get to know your zodiac sign on a whole new level using astrological houses
November 26, 2019 at 06:00PM by CWC So you’ve memorized all the attributes of your sun, moon, and rising signs—and maybe you’re even planning your workouts in accordance with your Mars sign and using your Venus sign to suss out potential partners. Ready for the next level of zodiac mastery? Then it might just be time to get to know the houses in astrology to provide you with a much deeper level of insight into your chart. Just as every zodiac chart is divided into 12 signs, it’s also divided into 12 houses that overlap those signs. Each house represents a different aspect of life, from travel and romance to career, and every planet in your chart is located in both a sign and a house. These two placements illustrate how a planet’s influence can appear in your life. It’s a lot wrap your head around, which is why astrologer Chani Nicholas, author of You Were Born For This: The Astrology of Radical Self-Acceptance, suggests imagining the mix of planets, signs, and houses in astrology as a theater production. “The planets are the characters, the signs are the costumes they’re wearing, and the houses are the stages, or areas of life, where they’re lived out,” she says. “Planets express their energy in the style of the sign they are in and show up prominently in whatever domain of life, or house, they are located [in].” Photo: Courtesy of HarperOne While you can look for the sign and house placements for

Healthy frozen breakfasts to simplify your morning 1. KASHI 7-GRAIN FROZEN WAFFLES Kashi’s frozen waffles contain 7 grams of fiber per serving, sourced from whole wheat flour and oats. “I would recommend adding a tablespoon of any nut butter, a few slices of strawberries, and a sprinkle of chia or hemp seeds for a balanced and nutrient rich plant based breakfast,” Shapiro says. SWEET EARTH FOODS BREAKFAST BURRITO Made with potatoes, tofu, and red bell peppers, Sweet Earth Foods’ breakfast packs 17 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and a healthy dose of vitamin C. “Overall, the numbers are very balanced and I could see someone feeling satisfied from this meal for at least a few hours,” Shapiro says, giving this breakfast burrito an a-okay. The winter skin-care hacks necessary for glowing through tundra-like weather
November 26, 2019 at 02:00PM by CWC If you deal with dry, oily, combination, irritated, or hyper-pigmented skin (re: any and every skin type), winter is the season with a singular mission to steal your glow. Tips for winter skin care so you don’t turn into a zombie person? File under “desperately needed.” Luckily, holistic esthetician Shani Hillian came through with the goods at our latest Wellness Collective event with Athleta, sharing some much-needed (and appreciated!) seasonal advice so you can proudly take close-up selfies of your face year-round. One of the biggest misconceptions is that you shouldn’t exfoliate in winter—which is flat out not true, says Hillian. “A lot of people think they have dry skin, but it’s just dead,” she says. “It’s a matter of what you’re doing and how you’re doing it.” In other words, be gentler with your method so you don’t irritate delicate spots—but still buff so you’re getting rid of the dead stuff. Next, keep a moisturizer close at all times so you can lock in hydration all day and night. If you’re not sure what to look for, Hillian recommends oils low on the comedogenic scale (ones that won’t clog your pores), with hemp seed oil being her ultimate fave. To add even more hydration to your life, try adding humidifiers to your bedroom, living room, or anywhere else you spend a lot of time. Lastly, if you use retinol, Hillian suggests decreasing the amount you slather it on to two times a
Stop itchy skin after showering with these 6 derm-approved tips
November 26, 2019 at 02:00PM by CWC Showering is an art form. No really. You’re washing your hair and scrubbing your body clean. You’re trying not to ruin your fancy products in there. You’re implementing all the dermatologist-recommended hacks that promise silky skin. And, heck, maybe you’re even getting busy with your boo. There’s a lot that goes down in the shower, for sure. But sometimes, no matter what you think you’re doing right, the result isn’t the so-fresh-and-so-clean feeling you expected. Case in point: For some folks, stepping out of the shower equals itchy skin. If this is one of the shower-time woes you struggle with, the good news is that itchy skin after showering is actually pretty common, and in most cases, easy to fix. Here are some of the things that might be causing the itchy post-shower feeling and some pro tips on how to make it stop once and for all. What are the causes of itchy skin after a shower? Your skin is dry: According to Josh Axe, DNM, CNS, DC, founder of Ancient Nutrition and DrAxe.com, dry skin is one of the most common reasons people get itchy skin after a shower. The dryness can be due to a number of things including very cold or dry temperatures, indoor heating that reduces moisture in the air, or washing your skin a little too often. You’re taking too hot of a shower: In this world, there are two types of showerers. You have those who prefer comfortable,
This is your brain on toxic relationships—which are, indeed, super-addictive
November 26, 2019 at 01:00PM by CWC Maybe the toxic relationship you can’t quit is the old friend with exhausting drama, whose texts you always answer. Or, perhaps it’s the person you’re kind-of-sort-of dating, who feels like your soul mate (when they’re not ignoring your texts for three days straight). Or is it that cousin who emotionally Jekyll-and-Hydes you, treating you like a sibling one second and demanding that you be left out of Grandma’s will the next? No matter the specifics of your toxic relationship(s), the basic song and dance is pretty standard for everyone: This person brings chaos and pain into your life, and you know you should break away. But even when you try, you get drawn back into their unpredictable sphere of bad behavior again and again, and you can’t explain why. While factors like guilt and low self-esteem certainly play into a difficulty in building boundaries and sticking to them regarding these types of relationships, there’s another big-deal reason so many of us struggle to leave a toxic relationship: We’re subconsciously hooked on their very unpredictability. It’s not that healthy relationships are totally predictable, but generally, you know what to expect as a result of a straightforward action or event. If you’re having trouble with your manager, your friend will give you sage advice; if you’re hungry and don’t feel like cooking, your partner will order your favorite pizza; if you’re home for the holidays, your cousin will show everyone photos of your terrible 1999
