July 13, 2019 at 02:03AM by CWC When you take a muscle through the full range of motion, it goes through three phases of muscle contraction: eccentric, isometric, and concentric. Placing more attention on one phase can yield different results, it all depends on what you’re training for. For starters, what does any of that mean? Blink Fitness program manager Phil Timmons explains that eccentric is when your muscle is lengthening, concentric when the muscle is shortening, and isometric is when the muscle is contracting without moving (like when you’re in barre and shaking while holding at the bottom of a plié). “You can perform all of these in one exercise, such as an arm curl or bicep curl,” Timmons says. “As you are curling the weight up and bending the elbow it is a concentric movement. While holding the curl at the top with elbow bent for several seconds it’s isometric and while lowering the weight back down and straitening your arm it’s eccentric.” ad_intervals[‘407719_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘407719_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); You always want to train first eccentrically, then isometrically, and finally, concentrically. Rondel King, MS, exercise physiologist at the NYU Langone Sports Performance Center, explains that to safely build strength in a move (whether you’re just starting off or looking to increase the weight your lifting) you always want to train first eccentrically, then isometrically, and finally, concentrically. In this order, King says you’ll protect your joints and learn to accept force

Here’s what it means for your go-with-the-flow personality if you’re one of the 4 mutable zodiac signs
July 12, 2019 at 04:00PM by CWC I can only imagine the lightness that comes with being easy-going. My preppy Pisces roommate, for instance, can talk to just about anyone at a punk show and doesn’t mind switching gears last minute on happy-hour plans, so long as the specials are good. It must be nice (really nice) to feel so socially feathery, and apparently that’s the blessing of being born as one of the four mutable signs in astrology. Don’t know what a mutable sign is, besides something I am clearly not? As astrologer Stefanie Iris Weiss explains it, “Mutable signs innately know how to go with the flow.” They’re probably inclusive of your most flexible friends, who are probably born toward the end of any of the four seasons. To clear things up further, below find out what it means for your personality if you’re one of the four mutable signs of the zodiac. The zodiac has 3 quadruplicities, each covering 4 signs Astrological quadruplicities represent clusters of four zodiac signs and how they act and react in certain situations. As opposed to how the elements—fire, water, Earth, and, air—dictate a person’s temperament, quadruplicaties more so point to how a person directs energy behaviorally. Cardinal signs are known for being great self-starters, while fixed signs are known for being consistent in their ways. So, what about mutable signs? ad_intervals[‘403188_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘403188_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); “Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces—the signs that cap
Why does my face get so much redder than everyone else’s when I work out?
July 12, 2019 at 03:01PM by CWC When I workout, sweat and a bright red face typically go hand-in-hand. At this point, I’ve just accepted that I’m going to look like a tomato anytime I get my heart rate up. But I have to admit, I am curious… Why am I the only one in my class who leaves looking like a fire truck? To get to the bottom of my facial redness, I reached out to someone who deals with skin issues every day: a dermatologist. And of course there’s a simple explanation for why it happens in the first place. “Getting a red face while working out is completely normal—this is our body’s natural response to regulating temperature,” says Sheel Desai Solomon, MD, a North Carolina-based dermatologist. “As we exercise, blood is being pumped through our blood vessels, or capillaries, at a faster rate to maximize oxygen intake. The capillaries widen to deliver more oxygen to the working muscles and also push heat to the surface of the skin to avoid overheating. This can lead your face to appear red and is especially visible in people with fair skin.” ad_intervals[‘407588_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘407588_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); Fair skin definitely checks out in my case. But the reason you might always be so much redder than your workout pals goes beyond skin tone. “If you’re someone who gets redder than others, this could be because you have more capillaries in your face than
How to use foods that make you sleepy to your advantage
July 12, 2019 at 03:00PM by CWC From the parenting trick of lulling kids to sleep with a pre-bedtime glass of milk to avoiding caffeine after hours so you aren’t up all night counting sheep, there’s no denying that there’s a connection between food and sleep. Sometimes this is a gift, and sometimes it’s a curse. (Ever feel like you’re falling asleep at your desk around 2 p.m.? Something you ate for lunch could be the reason why.) So how do you hack your diet to work to your advantage? There’s definitely some helpful tips to keep in mind. Here, registered dietitian and Verywell Health general manager Rachel Berman, RD, gives the low-down on common foods that make people feel sleepy during the day, ones that could work to your advantage at night, and common culprits that could be keeping you up and interfering with your sleep. You’ll leave knowing what to eat, when, literally eating your way to a better night’s sleep. Getting everything done on your to-do list can be challenging even when energy is on your side, but when it’s working against you? Woof. If you had a sugary granola bar or bagel for breakfast, you could find yourself wanting to take a nap a few
What is it *really* like to get a perm for your eyelashes? One editor tried it to find out
July 12, 2019 at 01:00PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im3ejx7zOKM] Curious about lash lifts? Watch this video to see what the treatment’s really like. I grew up knowing all about hair perms. Case in point: My mom had a perm when she gave birth to me, and continued getting it a few times back in the 80s. But I’ve yet to experience a lash lift, which is essentially… a perm for your eyelashes. Well+Good video producer Ella Dove is on the case. In the latest episode of Well+Good’s video series, What the Wellness—in which we test out all of the most out-there things in the wellness world—Dove sits down at Hourglass Cosmetics in Soho to try out the lash treatment for herself. ad_intervals[‘407747_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘407747_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); The thing about lash lifts is that, unlike lash extensions, they’re treating your natural lashes—with a curl—the way a perm does with your hair. The perk to this? Your lashes come out unscathed. “Some derms say extensions can damage the lash line,” says Dove. “This just perks [them] up without adding anything to the face.” So there’s no damage involved—just an eyeball-friendly rod, some adhesive glue and a lash solution, and some under-eye patches. You get to watch the whole thing in action—including Dove’s attempt at taking a selfie with her eyes closed (can she do it?!)—from the adhesion to the curling and, of course, the Big Reveal. (Personally, I gasped.) We even check in with her
