June 28, 2019 at 11:45AM by CWC If you blinked during Thursday night’s Democratic presidential debate, you might have missed discussion on the topic of reproductive health entirely. (Wednesday’s debate likewise glossed over another major health issue: climate change.) Considering that nine states have now passed bills that seriously limit women’s access to abortion, and another four are considering similar actions, and 19 states have laws that could be used restrict legal abortions, the issue’s lack of airtime seemed like an egregious oversight. On stage at the debate, only New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders were given a chance to speak (for just less than a minute apiece) about their stances on abortion rights. But other frontrunners in the 2020 presidential race have their own game plans to protect women’s reproductive rights. Kamala Harris “Similar to the preclearance requirement of the Voting Rights Act, Harris will require, for the first time, that states and localities with a history of violating Roe v. Wade obtain approval from her Department of Justice before any abortion law or practice can take effect,” reads Senator Kamala Harris’ official campaign website. ad_intervals[‘404599_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404599_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); This will stand for any state or locality that has attempted to defy Roe v. Wade in the last 25 years. While the DOJ will act as a safeguard against any potential threats to the right to an abortion, citizens also have the opportunity to challenge the government body.

T.J. Maxx is secretly the best place to score skin care—here’s what to buy
June 28, 2019 at 10:30AM by CWC I hunt for beauty products the same way as I hunt for clothes: I go e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e to find what I’m looking for. On the clothing front, I’ll hit up every spot from traditional clothing stores to Goodwill and even my mom’s closet (sorry mom!). And when it comes to skin-care products, I’m scouring beauty boutiques, Sephora and Ulta, the drugstore (duh), and sometimes department stores. You know, the usual suspects. But then one day on a quest to find some cute home decor for my apartment, I discovered the ultimate fashion and beauty jackpot under the same roof: at T.J. Maxx. No kidding. What I thought was an amazing store for finding bargains on clothes and houseware and purses is actually an under-the-radar skin-care mecca. Consider me shook. My shopping cart was soon overflowing with a variety of skin-care gems, including acne-busting face masks, clean beauty MVPs (including deodorant), body-care must-haves, and pore-clearing serums. Seriously—the ubiquitous store has a major clean beauty selection, so if you’re looking for more natural finds, it’s got you. And if you’re looking to splurge? T.J. Maxx even has luxe skin-care by SK-II and Clarins. It’s particularly exciting because the megastore is in, like, every town, so you can easily swing by to stock up on beauty essentials while you’re out buying home goods. ad_intervals[‘404576_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404576_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); Since their beauty offering is actually kinda overwhelming (because it’s just that
Here’s what a healthy plate looks like on the Paleo diet
June 28, 2019 at 09:38AM by CWC If someone had suggested 10 years ago to “eat like a caveman,” they probably would have been met with a fair amount of raised eyebrows and skepticism. Fast-forward to today, and that’s the entire ethos of the very popular Paleo diet. “The Paleo diet is based on the premise of eating real food, as close to our ancestors as possible. It removes common inflammatory foods like grains, dairy, soy, processed vegetable oils, refined sugar and legumes,” says Samantha Presicci, MCN, RD, LD, CPT, lead dietitian at Snap Kitchen. The eating plan comes with a decent amount of potential benefits, she says, including reduced inflammation and improved digestion and blood sugar control. (However, some experts say more research is needed.) It might especially beneficial for those struggling with GI issues. “Some people, including some of my clients with digestive health issues and autoimmune disease, report feeling better on a Paleo diet, but this is all anecdotal,” says EA Stewart, MBA, RD, CLT. She also likes the emphasis on whole foods and reduction of added sugars and highly processed foods, neither of which do any favors for people’s health. ad_intervals[‘404227_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404227_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); While the initial Paleo diet “rules” were pretty strict, Stewart says there are many interpretations out there that are more manageable. “There are no hard-and-fast rules about the percentage of foods and macronutrients that should be eaten on the Paleo diet,” she says.

How to get your morning beauty routine down to a breezy 10 minutes, care of the pros
June 28, 2019 at 09:00AM by CWC Unless you’re one of those wellness-world wizards who has fully mastered the art of the a.m. routine, getting out the door in the morning can be hectic (to say the least). If you love the snooze button as much as I do, you’re likely left with only a few minutes from the time you hop out of bed until you’ve gotta hit the road, which means it’s a major crunch to get everything done (why oh why do I never pick out an outfit or pack my lunch the night before?!). The good news? You don’t actually need a whole lot of time to get out the door looking—and feeling—fly. To streamline your morning routine, we asked three pros to each put together a skin-care, hair-care, and makeup routine that won’t run you more than three minutes. Which means you can get it all done in nine minutes flat, with one to spare so you can admire your handiwork in the mirror. Skin care 1. Cleanse your skin for 45 seconds to one minute: Sing a rendition of “The ABC’s” while you give your skin a (gentle) scrub down to get rid of any dirt or grime that’s accumulated over night. No need to double cleanse, since you (hopefully) won’t have makeup to remove first thing in the morning. If you’re really in a time crunch, use micellar water for a quick-and-easy clean that won’t totally dehydrate your skin. ad_intervals[‘398447_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function ()
Step aside seitan, mushrooms are the new all-stars of alt-meat
June 28, 2019 at 07:50AM by CWC Most people, it seems, are on a quest to eat more plants, but if you’re a meat eater—or more aptly, a meat lover—giving up juicy beef burgers and crispy, flavorful bacon can be very, very hard. Tofu and seitan—the all-stars of the meat substitute world—don’t exactly hit the spot. But mushrooms as meat substitute? Now you’re onto something. It’s no secret that companies are getting closer to creating alternative meats that taste startling like the real thing. Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat in particular have won over many carnivores for not only tasting like meat but looking like it, too. One gripe, however, is that many point out how they are still very processed foods, and the ingredients list isn’t exactly simple. (Methylcellulose, maltodextrin, and cultured dextrose—delicious!) For people who want to eat less meat but also want to be able to recognize everything what they’re eating is made of, this is a challenge. But recently, a very recognizable ingredient, the humble mushroom, is starting to pop up as the latest healthy meat substitute. ad_intervals[‘404574_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404574_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); Natural salad dressing company, Hansley Foods, is using mushrooms as the primary ingredient in their “bacon” bites, after realizing that burned bits taste surprising similar to the real thing. As Fast Company points out in the same article highlighting Hansley Foods, fast-food chain Sonic is also selling blended burgers, using mushrooms to decrease the amount of
This 3-move, total-body workout packs in a full sweat sesh in a matter of minutes
June 28, 2019 at 07:00AM by CWC First things first, let’s get one thing straight: You can’t target all of your muscles evenly in every single movement you perform—otherwise you’d be doing burpees all day, every day. “There’s no way to evenly use all muscle groups throughout any strength exercise since the purpose of strength exercise is to isolate one certain area,” explains New York Sports Club Lab master instructor Bianca Vesco explains. “Specifically, if you’re focusing on smaller muscle groups, you have to use a light enough weight for that area, so that the stronger muscles surrounding it don’t take over.” Just because you can’t target everything in one fell swoop doesn’t mean it’s impossible to train your body to use all your muscles though. The trick is to 1) be mindful and present in your body, and 2) commit a killer full-body workout to memory. According to Y7 studio instructor Caitlyn Casson, total body training starts with a simple shift in awareness. “Often we work out to target specific areas of the body: the booty, the biceps, the abs,” she starts. “But, let’s remember that the body is a fully connected structure, each piece connects to something else.” With this small shift in awareness, Casson explains that we can keep all parts of the body engaged and present in every movement. “You’re doing squats for your booty? Can you also engage your abs and back muscles to support the motion of the squat?” she asks. “Or maybe you

I love a good at-home workout. But ab workouts—out of the zillions of options out there—are pretty easy to do just about anywhere. Like, you could squeeze in a great ab workout on the floor in your kitchen, or the stairwell at your office, or even in the aisle of an airplane, if you’re so inclined. The moves I’m bringing with me everywhere this summer? Charlee Atkins’s 15-minute bodyweight ab workout. The superstar trainer and founder of Le Sweat and Le Stretch just gave Well+Good an exclusive core-shaking workout that requires no equipment besides a mat and your body. ad_intervals[‘404544_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404544_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); Seriously, this ab workout going to work muscles you didn’t even know you had. Atkins’s workout consists of two sets that you cycle through twice, with four moves per set. Ready, go! Here’s a perfect 15-minute ab workout, courtesy of Charlee Atkins First Set 1. Classic crunch: Lying on your back on the mat, lift your head up, raising your chest towards the ceiling while keeping your lower back pressing into the mat. Your heels should be fingertip length from your booty. Keep your elbows open and lift your chest up. Each time you crunch, breathe out and press your lower back into the mat to target the abs. 2. Reverse curl: With
Is it okay, psychologically and otherwise, to have sex in the same room as your pet?
June 28, 2019 at 06:27AM by CWC Though it would be just swell to own an adorable corgi named Waffles, there are several reasons why I elect not to have a dog right now. Namely, I am not even 1 percent responsible enough for that. I can barely find the time to take care of myself, let alone set aside some Kibbles ‘n Bits, reserve a dog walker if I want to be out past 6 p.m., take necessary precautions to ensure the pup isn’t in the room (and, thus, irreparably scarred) every time I want to have sex, or, if the pet does walk in on it, make sure they don’t try to get in on the action. Oh, don’t act like this hasn’t happened to you, pet owners. Every friend of mine who boldly shares a studio or one-bedroom apartment with their fur baby has at least one story about how it walked in on sex. What I’ve never learned, though, is intel on whether they kept going at it. Which brings up an interesting question: Is it…bad, or unadvisable for any reason if you have sex in the same room as your pet? ad_intervals[‘404371_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404371_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Well, good news first: If you do it in front of your pet, it likely has no idea what’s going on. Unlike if your child walked in on sex, there’s nothing psychologically scarring about it for Coco or Fluffy or Tails.
