This “personality compass” quiz helps you find your true direction at work

April 18, 2019 at 08:45AM by CWC Compatible and clashing personalities are bound to cross paths at the office. Who among us hasn’t longed for a sorting hat (à la Harry Potter) to categorize coworkers into houses depending on their traits? While there isn’t yet a magical headpiece to determine whether Suzie in the cubicle next to the kitchen is a Gryffindor or a Syltherin, the Well+Good staff got to know one another a little better with a work personality test that helps team members find their cardinal direction “The Personality Compass” is a 5-minute (or less) quiz first outlined by Diane Turner in The Personality Compass: A New Way to Understand People. By filling out a brief questionnaire, you learn which arrow of the compass aligns with your temperament. The objective of discovering your true north (or east, or south, or west) is simple: to identify how your own sensibilities differ from your colleagues so that everyone can better understand—and collaborate—with one another. “Each type is different,” reads the instruction sheet for the test. “Each has different preferences, different strengths, different weaknesses, and different points of view. At times those differences can create difficulties and clashes, but if we understand the differences we can find ways to work together and that can become a great strength!” While the sorting hat prompts Harry Potter spends the better part of seven books distrusting everyone who’s not in his own house, the personality compass is meant to inspire engagement and collaboration with your

An esthetician shares the most common questions she gets about skin care

April 18, 2019 at 08:26AM by CWC Skin-care advice is simple—until it isn’t. What’s the most effective way to get rid of a breakout…fast! How do I use a jade roller…quick! What on earth is the difference between retinol and a retinoid…SOS! As an esthetician, I receive questions on a daily basis, especially on Instagram. Seemingly over the last year, my clients have morphed into die-hard skin-care fanatics. Maybe it’s the predominance of self-care or the environmental consciousness of today’s society, but nowadays, people have questions. The truth is, there’s no real one-size-fits-all solution in the beauty world, and while there’s plenty of great advice being given, it can be difficult to know whose suggestions to take. To cut through the clutter, and to bring you real skin solutions that I’ve seen success with in my 10-plus year career, I’ve narrowed down the most commonly asked questions I get as an esthetician in my Instagram DMs. Here we go. What’s the fastest and most effective way to get rid of dark spots? First and foremost patience is key. There are no quick fixes. Effective results come from consistency and time. Microdermabrasion, enzyme peels, and natural sources of vitamin C and E work beautifully at treating dark spots. Both are potent antioxidants that work together to prevent free-radical damage to the skin, and simultaneously vitamin C brightens while vitamin E promotes new skin cell regeneration. Always follow up with sunscreen, because dark spots will only get darker with sun exposure. I

How to cold brew your own sparkling beauty water infused with citrus and flower petals

April 18, 2019 at 07:57AM by CWC If you’re as plant obsessed as everyone in the succulent-covered Well+Good offices, you pretty much have spring fever right now. Gorgeous greenery and flowers are blossoming everywhere across the country. (Shoutout to everyone traipsing through California’s poppy fields or the bluebonnets in Texas.) But the power of colorful plants extends far beyond home decor. Certain ones are anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and anti-bad mood. In the latest episode of Plant Based, herbalist, health coach, and Supernatural founder Rachelle Robinett shares her recipe for sparkling beauty water, made with some key floral ingredients. “[They’re] brightening, soothing, and some are mood boosting,” she says of the blend. So what exactly in it? Here’s a breakdown: Citrus peels, rose petals, calendula ( vibrant orange flower that serves as a balm for the skin), chamomile, lavender, hibiscus, and sparkling water. Robinett explains that the citrus peels and flowers are high in polyphenols (which protect the body from harmful agents like ultraviolet rays and radiation) and terpenes (which may help lower anxiety). She also says the blend is high in antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation. Because the flower petals can be pretty bitter, Robinett cold brews the blend, which reduces the harshness, giving the beauty water a slightly sweet taste instead. And the sparkling water makes it super refreshing. Ready to see how to do it? Watch Robinett whip it up: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaU0fApN4GI] For more ways to reap the health benefits of plants, check out this guide on adaptogens and

This 10-in-1 kitchen gadget is all you need to cut and peel every fruit under the sun

April 18, 2019 at 07:36AM by CWC A unique kitchen gadget is my weakness. It doesn’t take much to convince myself that I need yet another newfangled tool. Clip-on strainers, lemon zesters, veggie keepers—you name it, it’s in my cart. Admittedly, some of these gadgets do little more than collect dust after purchase, since old-fashioned way of doing something is sometimes the best way. But there’s one impulse buy that I’ve actually been putting to good use every day. At a glance, my new Fruit Slicer Set ($15) looks like a puzzle. With all the different parts and bold colors, there’s a lot going on. But it solves more problems than it creates—promise! Once you actually break it down, it becomes clear that the 10-in-1 gadget is just as utilitarian as it is pretty. Each tool is designed specifically to helps you cut, peel, and slice any type of fruit like a professional chef. Photo: Amazon Here’s what you get with our new favorite kitchen gadget, the Fruit Slicer Set: avocado scoop fruit masher apple cutter citrus cutter fruit mesh cuter lemon squeezer a fruit bowl fruit grater orange squeezer little fruit forks Phew! My favorite is the mesh cutter for soft fruits like kiwi, which are notoriously annoying to peel! Sure, it might seem a little excessive, but considering this kitchen gadget keeps everything neatly stacked, it might just be the best purchase you’ll ever make. If you’re also a fan of gadgets of all kinds, check out these

If your workouts are fueled by farts, here’s how to find some relief

April 18, 2019 at 07:00AM by CWC If you’re feeling a bit gassy and you’re about to hit the gym—or worse, you’re already there and can’t stop farting—you might stop and think to yourself what. is. going. on.? Certainly, it’s distracting, and yeah, it doesn’t feel great either to have an uneasy stomach when you’re trying to, you know, strengthen your core and the rest of your muscles. But it does bring to mind one very specific question: Why does fitness seem to really amp up the amount of toots in the tank? “Gas is produced in the gut by the microbes that reside there. They eat foods we don’t digest and ferment them, which results in gas,” says Kate Scarlata, RD and GI and IBS expert. “We might notice lower GI gas moving during exercise, as exercise can stimulate the movement of gas in the intestine.” So, if you’re eating before exercising, you might experience those gas bubbles. The good news is you don’t need to suffer through those minutes in pain. With a few simple lifestyle tips and exercises, you can reduce gas prior to exercising and get rid of it mid-workout, too. Bless up. 1. Choose your carbs wisely before working out You need carbs to help fuel your workout with immediate and sustainable energy, but some carbs are better than others in terms of gas production. Ditch poorly absorbed, fermentable carbs a few hours before you head to the gym. “These include beans, onion, garlic and

Therapeutic cooking is meditation for people who love to eat (or hate to sit still)

April 18, 2019 at 05:32AM by CWC This week on Well+Good, we’re launching Cook With Us, a new program designed to help you do just that. We believe that cooking is an important piece of the wellness puzzle and that everyone can make magic (or at least some avo toast) happen in the kitchen. Sometimes, you just need someone to show you where to start, and maybe a few others cheering you on. It doesn’t need to be complicated, or every day—like most things in the wellness world, a little goes a long way.  As someone whose job it is to write about wellness, I have a (somewhat) shameful confession to make: I hate meditating. It’s not for a lack of trying; I’m well aware of how it can reduce anxiety and depression, as well as its other major benefits for your brain and overall well-being. But for some reason I just can’t get into it. Even in a sensory deprivation tank the other day, with literally zero distractions, I just floated from edge to edge of the chamber while thinking about what I was going to eat for lunch.  If you find yourself similarly stuck (i.e. you want the benefits of meditation without actually having to meditate), rest assured there is a solution: therapeutic cooking. Basically, it’s using the act of cooking for yourself as a mindful, meditative experience. And it’s a viable meditation alternative, says Harry Ritter, MD, the founder and CEO of Alma, a co-working space for therapists. “Meditation

Everlane is finally (finally!) getting into the sneaker game

April 18, 2019 at 04:10AM by CWC To know me is to know that I have strong opinions about footwear. (I do not care if you live by the beach, flip flops are still terrible and I stand by my thoughts.) But in a show of my ability to be flexible and open to new ideas, I have done a 180 on my feelings about sneakers. I am a recent inductee into the sneakers club. A few years ago, I was convinced that sneakers only belonged in the gym. Now I am obsessed and will attempt to make sneakers work for pretty much any occasion. However, and it pains me to say this, sneakers are not the most sustainable fashion items, often using lots of virgin plastic and generating something like 30 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. (Insert John Oliver’s sarcastic “cool”.) We really (really, really!) don’t need to be putting that into the environment. But thankfully, we’re moving into an era where brands are increasingly conscious about their environmental impact. One such brand is Everlane, which is launching the sustainable sneaker line Tread by Everlane on April 25. Everlane was founded in 2011, but it took the brand eight years to launch a sneaker because they wanted to do it sans the negative environmental impact. The line will launch with the Trainer, which retails for $98. This unisex trainer that has—drumroll please—zero carbon impact. Snaps for Everlane. “In a world where we are becoming more conscious of our plastic

The derm-approved, drugstore soap to shower with after a workout

April 18, 2019 at 04:00AM by CWC The idea of “gym bag beauty” is nothing new. When your mornings consist of a mad-dash from your bed to a workout class and straight to the office, it’s inevitable that you’ve got at least a few staples that have a permanent home inside your everyday tote. But in addition to the usual dry shampoo and two-in-one lipstick-blush you’ve got in there, there’s one skin-care ingredient that should always be a part of both your post-sweat sesh beauty routine. When it’s time to hit the shower, stock up on something laced with sulfur, which won’t only help get you clean, but can also help to squelch fungus and bacteria from your sweat sesh. “Sulfurs are really good antibacterial and anti yeast medicine, and it’s good to use almost like a preventative antibiotic on the skin because it prevents acne-causing yeast from accumulating,” explains Virginia-based dermatologist Lily Talakoub, MD of McLean Dermatology and Skincare. Take note: The ingredient can be drying, so if you have dry skin or normal skin that feels parched after showering with it, skip this step and return to your business-as-usual soap. If you’re planning to skip the shower, you can find sulfur body products which can similarly work their magic. Just be sure to avoid any products with silicone or dimethicone in them when you know you’ll be working up a sweat, because,  “if you sweat it’s going to sit on your skin and it’s going to trap all of
