But something that changes all the time is whether I use my own bodyweight to train with, or actual weights. I really just choose depending on my mood, or whatever the instructor in my workout streaming app tells me to do. But, newsflash to my aloof self: Bodyweight and regular weights in workouts are used for very different purposes. “Looking at many of the top athletes in the world from different sports, one could make the argument in both directions that bodyweight training is superior to weight training or vice versa,” says Andy Speer, Peloton Tread instructor (Peloton Digital BTW has a ton of classes you can stream on-demand that use both methods). He says to think about Olympic gymnasts and weightlifters as examples: “Gymnasts rarely lift weights, but perform unbelievable feats of strength and explosiveness,” says Speer. “Olympic weightlifters use a weighted barbell for the majority of their training and are able to lift more weight over their head than any other athlete.” So really, when choosing between the two methods, it really all comes down to your particular goals. It’s likely a simple staple or nostalgic comfort food more likely to appear on a children’s menu than on an upscale omakase. (For proof, just look to the choices of death-row inmates who actually had to choose their final meal; things like pizza, steak, fried chicken, and French fries all made the cut.) With this in mind, it’s really not so surprising that while on a recent weeklong press trip to Bali (the struggle) where I was treated to authentic, luxe, colorful meals, my favorite dish was none other than benefits-laden (yet nonetheless basic) turmeric rice. I say this not to knock the awesome food I had on the trip, which introduced me to sambal sauce (my new favorite Sriracha alternative), and to so many varieties of tropical fruit that I’ll have to just dream about until the next time I’m in Southeast Asia. Because IMHO, once my entire body begins to gyrate, that’s a pretty good sign that I’ve put in some good work, and can move onto the next thing. But more-and-more trainers are saying to push through that pain and start counting reps at the point of exhaustion, and their argument is one that’s hard to negate: Results. “The reason trainers might say ‘start counting your reps when your muscles start shaking’ is because this is a point where your muscles are definitely being challenged and looking to recruit more muscle fibers,” says Ricardo Rose, instructor at EverybodyFights. According to Rose, by fatiguing muscles and doing more than 12 reps, you’re able to build muscular endurance, while getting stronger in the process. But the main reason that trainers say this is because we tend to hit fitness plateaus and frequently don’t push out of them to reach the next level. “If you’ve been training with the same set and rep structure over time, you’ll need to make one of two adjustments. Your first step is to increase the weight being lifted. Then, increase the repetitions,” he says. “Most programs call for a basic rep and set structure—for example, the classic three sets of 10 reps. I harness the powers of bacteria-killing tea tree oil, after all. But even though I diligently wipe down every surface, there’s one dirty kitchen spot I’ve been missing my entire life. Your knife block is one of those things that you don’t really think about. The knives in it? Sure, those get cleaned after every use. But the block? Nope, never. According to Apartment Therapy, if your knives aren’t completely clean or dry, those dark slots make for the perfect breeding grounds for bacteria and mold. You might already have both in there without even realizing it. Unless you have time to give your knife block a deep-clean once a month (using a pipe cleaner to scrub inside the slots), it’s almost worth just ditching it in the first place. After watching several family members pass away from aggressive forms of the disease as a child, More knew she didn’t want to suffer the same fate. Instead, she went into warrior mode, choosing to have both breasts removed in a preventative mastectomy. In the years that followed, More became a celebrated activist for women’s health and empowerment, launching a non-profit community called The Breasties that offers retreats, events, and support for young women affected by breast and reproductive cancers.
