Thank you, Mindy Kaling, for sharing this perfect list of realistic rom-com titles

January 18, 2019 at 07:23AM by CWC Growing up, I was all about romantic comedies. I can’t count the number of times I’ve watch Harry meet Sally, Andie Anderson decide she doesn’t want to lose her guy, or Jenna Rink wish her way back into the life of her childhood BFF. But these films don’t exactly portray modern relationships with realistic precision. And that’s why this funny relationship meme—a modern update to classic rom-com titles—is bound to make you feel much better about your own long-term relationship. Kaling’s Instagram is perennially entertaining and one of her recent #regrams doesn’t disappoint. This hilarious list of Little Known Rom-Coms to Watch with Your Long-Term Partner—created and shared by cartoonist for The New Yorker Amy Kurzweil, in February 2018—offers a handful of relatable updates to familiar movie titles. Instead of 10 Things I Hate About You, you get Ten Things I Hate About the Way You Load the Dishwasher. And while P.S. I Love You is a great flick, P.S. I Love You. Just Not in That Shirt is far more representative of real-life love. View this post on Instagram Real life romantic comedies. (via @amykurzweil) A post shared by Mindy Kaling (@mindykaling) on Jan 8, 2019 at 1:08pm PST //www.instagram.com/embed.js I’m never going to give up my (impressive!) collection of romantic comedies, but one of the joys of any relationship is that it isn’t #flawless—far from it, thankfully. In life, no one always says the right thing and you might not want to cuddle throughout the night (personal space,

Okay dad, convince me why you still use 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner

January 18, 2019 at 07:18AM by CWC While the rest of us create a veritable fortress of shampoo and deep conditioner bottles in our showers, it is mystifying, mystifying I tell you, that 2-in-1 shampoos and conditioners have a home in the showers of dads across America. We’re throwing down $11 on some separate low-sudsing shampoo and total repair conditioner, while the men who raised us default to a single product. What’s up with that? As a seasoned journalist, I sought out a professional “dadpinion” from my father Nick Garis, who understandably groaned when I asked for his dadpinion. In a tone that strongly alluded to having not consumed coffee yet, he gave me a spiel about the sweet allure of efficiency. “I don’t want to bother to do the same thing twice,” he said. Then, I asked if he could give me a ride home from my brother’s graduation, and he grumbled something that sounded like a yes, so altogether, it was a productive convo. I’ll admit, I’m all for speeding up my beauty routine as much as possible, but I wonder if taking a shortcut with the 2-in-1 would create more work in the long run. And for that, I turn to science. According to an article in Huffington Post, cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson explains that shampoo and conditioners have different jobs that are hard to combine. “There’s only so much you can do in a 2-in-1 shampoo because most of the conditioners are cationic, meaning they have a positive charge, but

Sorry, hygge-loving binge-watchers: Your Netflix bill is about to spike (again!)

January 18, 2019 at 06:55AM by CWC Nothing stinks more than bearing bad news (except maybe your filthy gym clothes), but here goes: Netflix just announced its prices are rising…again. All three of the streaming service’s plans are increasing by a dollar or two, placing them at to $9, $13, and $16 a month, reports CNN Business. Existing customers will reportedly be given a few months before they see the change reflected in their monthly billing cycle. (Read: You’ll be paying a premium fare just in time for Stranger Things season three’s release on July 4.) All three of the streaming service’s plans are increasing by a dollar or two, placing them at to $9, $13, and $16 a month, reports CNN Business. Sure, having to pay more stinks—but there’s a silver-screened lining: An extra dollar or two from users could help the company finance the creation of even more addicting shows and movies (because Narcos and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before need fuel to keep going strong). After all, Netflix did walk away with five awards at its year’s Golden Globes. Plus, they need to compete with powerhouses like Disney, Amazon, and Apple who are also vying for territory on the public’s to-be-watched queue. Binge-watching might be bad for your health, but it sure is good for the soul—especially with cozy-forward hygge season upon us. This story was originally published on October 6, 2017. Updated with additional reporting by Kells McPhillips on January 18, 2019.  These Netflix movies will totally inspire your fall beauty refresh. Looking for more of

The genius way Hilaria Baldwin uses yoga techniques to conquer parenting challenges

January 18, 2019 at 06:02AM by CWC When I call Hilaria Baldwin to chat parenting, the pregnant mother of three tells me she’s multitasking in the car with her husband Alec (Baldwin, the actor), en route to watch him do a quickie appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show. Uh, same.  Her hectic schedule provides the perfect segue to dive into questions about how she manages to accomplish everything she does—Baldwin’s a wellness and fitness expert, author of The Living Clearly Method, co-owner of Yoga Vida studios in New York City, mother, wife and, it must be said, a real babe—without seeming to break a (non-workout-related) sweat. I especially wonder how she keeps it all together when new babies arrive, as they have with impressive frequency in the Baldwin house over the past five years. The trick, with parenting as with yoga, is to breathe through the burn and stay present. With a sweet “Oh my god,” Baldwin assures me she has off days just like the rest of us. “Do I cry sometimes? Absolutely,” she admits. “I have had a tiny meltdown after every baby.” Her trick for regaining balance, she says, is actually borrowed—like much of her advice—from her yoga practice. “I tell my students when they’re in a hard pose to just remember that this is temporary,” she explains. “It’s the same when you’re going through a difficult life transition—it might be difficult at that moment, but you’re going to figure it out.” The trick, she says, is to breathe through

One more thing ’90s thirst is giving us in 2019: the return of banner bottoms

January 18, 2019 at 06:06AM by CWC Black leggings are great. (As a work-from-home writer with a penchant for ballet and hot vinyasa flow, I spend a good 80 percent of my week in the versatile bottom.) But retro resurgences like matching sweat sets, ’70s-style running shorts, and bike shorts have staked their claim as far as the athleisure movement is concerned. And another old-school drift is having a moment: banner bottoms. “This trend is totally a nod to my memories of the ’90s and what all the cool people on MTV wore,” says stylist, Neelo Noory, whose clients include activewear titan, Nike. Banner bottoms are synonymous with iconic streetwear brands like FILA, Champion, and Adidas (all of whom, thanks to fashion’s insatiable thirst for all things retro, are prominently back in the spotlight). The style is a sporty riff on logomania, which is going strong from luxury accessories to activewear. Insignia panels—essentially racing stripes 2.0—are running down the side of leggings, jeans, track pants, and yes, even bike shorts right now. Even luxury labels like Paco Rabanne and Fendi (which debuted a collab with FILA for its fall/winter 2018 collection) all the way to fashion-forward activewear brands like P.E Nation and The Upside have variations of the logo-lined bottoms on offer—from snap-away pants and sweats to moisture-wicking leggings and sleek joggers. So, how to wear the trend circa 2019? “I think the best way to embrace the logo-trimmed bottoms is to channel your inner ‘90s music star with a

Why Kayla Itsines is committed to the Mediterranean diet during her pregnancy—and beyond

January 18, 2019 at 05:36AM by CWC In a classic case of what’s old is new again, the Mediterranean diet has replaced keto as the eating plan of the moment—and fitness superstar Kayla Itsines is 100 percent on board during her pregnancy. “I’ve always followed a balanced, Mediterranean diet as that is what works for me and my body. Being Greek, it’s part of my heritage and is what I grew up eating,” she tells Well+Good when asked why she’s such a fan of the diet. Of course pregnancy being, well, pregnancy, at first Itsines had to make a few adjustments to a familiar eating plan. “At the beginning of my pregnancy journey, I was feeling nauseous for the first 12 weeks so I consumed more dry foods than I normally would,” she says. “But being 23 weeks pregnant and in my second trimester, I am feeling so much better and am pretty much back to eating my normal Mediterranean diet. This consists of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, grilled meats and olive oil.” “I’ve always followed a balanced, Mediterranean diet as that is what works for me and my body. Being Greek, it’s part of my heritage and is what I grew up eating.” For Itsines, breakfast typically consists of either mushrooms and spinach on toast or scrambled eggs and kale on toast. Lunch is homemade chicken gyros, with a wholewheat wrap, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and tzatziki dressing. Between meals, she’ll grab fresh fruit, depending on what’s in

How changing the way you talk about money will help you reach your goals

January 18, 2019 at 05:30AM by CWC If sitting down to deal with your finances sounds like an absolute nightmare, at least know that you’re in good company. For plenty of us, the act of making smart, responsible money decisions conjures mental images of sitting alone at home, eating ramen over the holidays, or passing on countless brunches with friends. No matter how much you say you’re leaning into JOMO, when you decline invitations in favor of saving funds, major FOMO is about to be tapped. Perhaps that’s why it’s so common to simply opt in to social engagements with the intention of worrying about balancing your personal books later. In the moment, this zest-for-life way of living may well feel liberating, but soon enough, worry is sure to set in. You may end up thinking, “Will I be able to make my credit card payment? Should I have more to show for how hard I’m working? Will I ever be able to retire?” Our fiscal lives often feel like a lose-lose. We know what we should do in order to be financially flush, but our actions don’t follow, no matter how hard we try—after all, balancing saving and living is tough. Well, good news: There’s a way to make this situation easier on yourself without changing a single personal-finance habit. Rather, just shift the language you use when talking about them. The way we speak about something changes how we feel about it, which in turn influences the actions we

This Whole30 chili recipe will be your best friend on cold winter nights

January 18, 2019 at 05:21AM by CWC Photo: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Like a big bowl of mac-and-cheese or sizzling lasagna, chili is pure comfort food—especially on those nights when you fully plan on sleeping in your socks and your old college sweatshirt. The beauty of chili is that it’s virtually fool proof. You can throw almost anything you want into it that you want to use up from your fridge and it’ll still turn out pretty great. It’s also infinitely adaptable. Vegans can nix the meat in favor of lentils or more beans; Paleo eaters can If you’re vegan, use lentils for your protein. More of a Paleo eater? Go for ground turkey. And as proven in Melissa Hartwig’s latest book, The Whole30 Slow Cooker, it’s also easy to make chili Whole30-compliant. Contrary to what you may think, you don’t need beans or lentils (two foods that are persona non grata on Whole30) to make chili. And Hartwig’s take has everything you could want in a bowl of comfort food dinner: noodles (made from butternut squash), warming spices (oh hey there, cumin and chili peppers), protein (from ground beef), and even a hint of sweetness thanks to cocoa powder and cinnamon. Get out your slow cooker and try out the following Whole30 chili recipe below: Cincinnati chili butternut-noodle bowl Serves 6 Ingredients 1 yellow onion, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 1 jalapeño or serrano chili pepper, seeded (if desired) and finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 can (28
