January 06, 2019 at 05:37PM Okay, fill in the blank in this sentence: “The Golden Globes are known for being ____.” You may have said “boozy.” That’s correct. Or “hilarious”—especially if you were thinking of the years when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted. One thing I’ll bet you didn’t say: “healing.” But tonight, amid the annual red carpet hoopla, the publicist-approved anecdotes, and the “oh God, they’re talking about me in the monologue” tension in the audience, there were some moments that just sang. They were filled with beauty, heart, and in at least one case: (very loud) contrition. So, here are the nominees…for most healing moments from the 2019 Golden Globes. Taraji P. Henson and Carol Burnett. A lot of people will receive the Carol Burnett Lifetime Achievement Award in the future, but there’s only one Carol Burnett. At 85, the TV comedy goddess showed she’s still got it—and can still hit you in the heart (and the tear ducts) when she says, “I’m so glad we had this time together.” Judy Greer and the Fiji photo bomber. Jonathan Van Ness’ ice skating videos are the most oddly inspiring things online right now
January 06, 2019 at 12:52PM Jonathan Van Ness is good at many things. First: Getting glam. The Queer Eye star can make it cute with the best of them (and he’s got Manuka honey skills, too, hunny). Second, as a trained yoga teacher, he has mesmerizing flows for days. And then there’s that JVN charm. Whether he’s talking to Ariana Grande or Katie Couric, Van Ness can make almost anyone melt. But the most lovable thing about him is something he doesn’t get a lot of attention for: his refusal to listen to standard “stay in your lane” advice, which keeps you focused on things you’re already good at. In his Getting Curious podcast, he delves into political, economic, and cultural topics by bringing on well-credentialed experts to explain some heavyweight subjects—everything from the situation in Saudi Arabia to the reasons why the American bail system is such a hot mess. The most lovable thing about him is something he doesn’t get a lot of attention for: his refusal to listen to standard “stay in your lane” advice, which keeps you focused on things you’re already good at. The best part: He asks a lot of questions along the way that betray the fact that (gasp) he often doesn’t know as much as his guests do. He’s totally unafraid of sounding dumb, which of course is the best way to get smart. After all, it’s tough to learn new things when you’re spending all your time trying to keep up the
Winter white sneakers that are too good to save for spring
January 06, 2019 at 08:32AM It might be peak snow boot and fuzzy slipper season. But for a growing number of women, white sneakers continue to stay in heavy rotation this time of year—barring bad weather, of course. All you really need to winterize them is a crisp pair of white crew socks to keep your ankles warm. (Picking up some extra baking soda to keep your kicks optic all season long isn’t a bad idea, either.) The better news is that there are a ton of options that can endure the wicked windchill from your office to your boxing class on the market right now. (Hello, high-tops.) These winter white sneakers are so cool, they might just put a pep in your step—even during the January blues. Scroll down to see 7 winter-ready sneakers to scoop up ASAP. The secret to nailing the biggest online dating day of the year: wear sneakers
January 06, 2019 at 06:56AM If dating apps had a Super Bowl, or an Oscars, or a Mardi Gras … today is that day. According to the data scientists at Hinge, Bumble, OKCupid, and more, Sunday is always the busiest online dating day of the week. (As you try to make sure that next weekend is better than the one you just had?) But Sunday, January 6, is predicted to be the biggest of the year. And it’s based on math, from the past two years. According to Hinge data, on the first Sunday after New Year’s Day, you’re likely to get a 20 percent bump in conversations and a 36 percent higher response to messages. “It’s the perfect trifecta,” Julie Spira, author of The Perils of Cyber-Dating, told USA Today. “You have people recovering from a breakup or who were down during the holidays, you have all those New Year’s resolutions, and you have the clock ticking down to Valentine’s Day.” But hey, do we really need to be so fear-based about it? Here’s a better way to count down the clock to Valentine’s Day: all about the (self-)love, with daily restorative yoga sessions, followed by a hot bath with your rose quartz crystals. Now that’s a good time. Women are 166 percent more likely to get “likes” on a photo where they’re playing sports. (For men, it’s only 45 percent.) But! If you’re working that app game, today is the day when your efforts will reach the biggest
I tried facial acupuncture—and every bit of jaw and forehead tension melted away
January 06, 2019 at 04:00AM I’ve been noticing myself getting increasingly braver when it comes to trying out skin-care treatments. Last year alone, I zapped, lasered, and micro-needled my face to better absorb my own plasma. Then, at the tail end of the year, I heard about facial acupuncture—yet another way to achieve luminosity—and despite my fear of needles (that aren’t attached to a micro-needling device), I decided to give it a go. Facial cosmetic acupuncture (FCA) is just what it sounds like: The traditional treatment of placing needles into skin, which correspond with various meridians and release chi energy…only done on your face for beautifying reasons. There’s science to back it up, too. According to one study on the efficacy, facial cosmetic acupuncture resulted in boosted elasticity among the 27 participants who received 5 treatments; other studies have found that multiple FCA treatment improve skin texture, fend off fine lines, and provide an all-over refreshed glow. “It’s the ultimate multitasker,” says Shari Auth, DACM, LAc, LMT co-founder of WTHN, a New York City acupuncture studio. “Facial acupuncture is anti-aging, relaxes the muscles of the face, and boosts collagen to reduce wrinkles. It also increases circulation and boosts elastin to firm and tone the face, and promotes detoxification to leave you with a clearer, more even complexion.” Okay, okay, you’ve got my attention. But what is it like to experience? I was about to find out. Keep on scrolling for my firsthand account. What it’s like to get facial acupuncture When I
This is the perfect week to set intentions (and P.S.: aim high)
January 06, 2019 at 03:00AM The first full week of January (and of 2019) is the perfect time to make plans to turn your dreams into reality. And, good news: Astrologer Jennifer Racioppi says that cosmic conditions favor the bold right now—big time. Monday, January 7 The week begins with Venus, the planet of love and beauty, leaving Scorpio at 6:17 a.m. Eastern as she enters into the adventurous and expansive sign of Sagittarius. Traveling in Sagittarius until February 3, Venus asks you to take a bold approach when it comes to conjuring your desires. With the recent solar eclipse on Saturday night, and the new year just getting started, use this first Monday of the new year to solidify your 2019 intentions. After all, the moon, now in her waxing crescent phase, provides the perfect conditions for calling your desires in. Bravely commit to action aligned with your dreams. Tuesday, January 8 Mars, the planet of action, makes a hard (and harsh) connection to Mercury, the planet of communication. Meaning: You want to start the day with a resilient mindset. Spend time in the morning planning your day, and set an intention for what you wish you to accomplish. With your new year goals and intentions so fresh, now’s the time to pay attention to how you use your time. Are you spending it on what really matters to you? Or are other people’s agendas interrupting yours? Unexpected email, phone calls, text messages, and social media posts might present with
