The Sussexes made headlines this week when they stepped out to deliver meals for Project Angel Food, a Los Angeles-based charity focused on preparing and bringing food to people with AIDS and other critical illnesses. Clearly, nonprofits like this need support now more than ever as they struggle to help underserved communities during the pandemic. Project Angel Food works for a great cause and its mission makes it a natural fit Harry and Meghan, but the idea to volunteer with the organization actually came from Meghan’s mom, Doria, according to the charity’s executive director, Richard Ayoub. Ayoub told The Huffington Post this week that Doria was the one who suggested that Harry and Meghan get involved when they told her they wanted to find a way to give back over Easter weekend. The couple took Doria’s suggestion to heart and reached out to Project Angel Food to set up a meeting and a tour of its facilities. “They were just genuinely compassionate, interested individuals who came to visit the kitchens,” Ayoub said, adding that Harry and Meghan were “extremely engaged with every single person they met.” Sounds exactly like the Harry and Meghan we love. Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Haven’t Posted a Birthday Tribute to the Queen While Kate and William Did
April 21, 2020 at 02:05PM The Queen is celebrating her 94th birthday today in quarantine—and with less pomp and circumstance than in most years because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But one half of the former royal Fab Four has already acknowledged the Queen’s birthday on Instagram. Prince William and Kate Middleton shared their birthday tribute post to Queen Elizabeth II early this morning. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry haven’t shared anything on social media yet, but that is likely because the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not unveiled their new social media accounts yet. They have no active account to share it on. Meghan and Harry shared their final post on their SussexRoyal account—the account they used as working royals—on March 30. Their transition out of their senior royal family roles formally began April 1. “While you may not see us here, the work continues,” they wrote in their goodbye message. “Thank you to this community—for the support, the inspiration and the shared commitment to the good in the world. We look forward to reconnecting with you soon. You’ve been great!” Part of the reason they can’t use SussexRoyal is because of the word “royal” in it. As their team explained on their transition Q&A site, they will no longer use the word “royal” in their branding. “While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organization, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal’, it has been
Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life of Designer Dorian Rahimzadeh
April 21, 2020 at 02:00PM As people around the country enter their sixth week of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, athletes and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us. Dorian Rahimzadeh, founder and creative director, Dorian Who I am lucky enough to have my little studio where I am able to keep busy, work alone and self-isolate. Recently, I have started making upcycled masks with the leftover fabric I’ve been saving in my studio. At the beginning of March, I was working on a new collection and filling orders with the help of my interns. But since the outbreak, like every other business, I’ve had to send my team home to self-isolate. So, I was forced to once again start doing everything on my own. Though it’s a lot of work, I’m quite comfortable working by myself. I enjoy spending time alone but this situation has made me re-think so many aspects of my day-to-day life and has helped me learn to better balance life and work. This ‘pause’ has allowed me to reconsider so many things and shown me how to better appreciate and take in small moments. For me, the hardest part is not being able to see and hug my loved ones, or do normal outdoor activities but I am doing
I Looked Through 3,947 Items in the Matches Sale—and These Are My Favourites
April 21, 2020 at 11:12AM Matchesfashion just launched its mid-season sale, with 30% off many of our most-loved brands such as Shrimps, Ganni and Self Portrait. However it currently has 3,947 items listed under this offer, which translates into hours of pressing ‘next page’ if you wanted to look through it all. We have combed through all of the shoes, dresses, accessories and more to bring you a concise edit of the best offers we saw. Our main shopping advice is always to buy things that will fit within your own wardrobe, love for years (it’s best to avoid fads) and will actually wear. Simple we know, but this advice is more important when shopping in the sales. Instead of focusing on the reductions and what a great deal something is, it’s more important to consider whether this is something that is actually missing from your wardrobe. In the sale we’ve found lots of classic items that will act as building blocks in your wardrobe, such as Emma Willis shirts and Alighieri necklaces. With weddings and holidays on-hold, there’s notably more formal dresses and new-in bikinis in the sale than usual for this time of year. Many people in the industry use the sales primarily to buy things for the next year, rather than shopping for the season we’re in. Highlights include a Self Portrait powder blue midi dress, Shrimps’ cult pearl hair clips and straw hats from the new brand Avenue the Label. Next up, see our guide to the key spring summer
I’m 5’1″ and These Are the Petite High-Street Items I Love
April 21, 2020 at 11:05AM With spring here and summer fast approaching, it seems that dress season is well and truly underway. And while, I absolutely love this time of year, and all the beautiful weather it brings with it, for me, the phrase “dress season” doesn’t conjure up images of beachy linen mini dresses or flowing floral midis. No—it only makes me think of alterations and the dread of having to take each aforementioned dress to the tailor. You see, standing at the very petite height of 5’1″, historically, it has been very rare that I’ve been able to find a dress (or anything else for that matter) that actually fits me without the need to be taken up. It’s a fate I very much accepted in my late teens, as I learned how to shorten my clothes with hemming tape and an iron. Thankfully, though, in the years since then, several high-street retailers have heard my prayers and created petite-specific clothing lines, where absolutely no hemming is required. From Topshop and ASOS to Dorothy Perkins and New Look, several high-street brands throughout the UK are currently catering specifically to women 5’3″ and below. And better yet, many labels are creating their best selling pieces in shorter, petite-friendly sizes. From Topshop’s ever-popular floral midi dresses to H&M’s timeless cigarette trousers to ASOS’s trend-led looks, keep scrolling for all my favourite petite pieces from the high-street spring collections. I Was Sceptical About CBD, But This Skin-Soothing Range Changed My Mind
April 21, 2020 at 10:46AM When I first heard about the use of CBD in the beauty industry a couple of years ago, I have to admit I was dubious. CBD (otherwise known as cannabidiol) is a naturally-occurring chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike its relative THC, CBD has no psychoactive properties. When taken as a supplement, CBD is thought to have the ability to help with pain, anxiety, stress and insomnia. Over certain periods of the last year or so, I have taken daily CBD supplements, mainly just to give them a test drive. And, while by no means are my personal experiences with CBD a reflection on the absolute truth (jury’s still out in the science world), I can say that I really didn’t notice a huge difference in my everyday life, except maybe I sleep a little better. And this is the reason I was even more sceptical when I heard that CBD was being used in skincare products. The idea goes that the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD make it a great ingredient for soothing the skin. However, the idea that topical CBD could possibly improve the condition of my skin seemed totally bizarre given than it barely affected me when I took it as a supplement. On top of all of this, I found myself angered by the amount of brands jumping on the CBD train when actually, cannabis-derived hemp has been used in skincare for hundreds (if not thousands) of years thanks to its nourishing properties.
This Basic Mango Top Will Make Any Outfit Look Expensive
April 21, 2020 at 10:00AM There’s nothing that’s made me feel quite so old as TikTok. Perhaps it’s the energetic dances that require hours of practice or maybe it’s that I just don’t understand why anyone would want another social media platform to be a part of. Honestly, just leave me with my Instagram stories and an occasional tweet and I’m happy. While social media might be constantly delivering new platforms that make me confused, I’m not, however, confused by fashion. True, fashion thrives on “newness” but ultimately, trends always come back around again, which I find comfortingly reliable. Right now, the industry has a fixation on the ’90s minimalist trend and with that has come a new love for the sleeveless T-shirt, in particular from Mango. Mango‘s latest season has been particularly brilliant but it’s this shoulder padded vest top that comes in three different colourways—black, white and striped—that’s really made an impact. It’s easy to see why: not only does it elevate jeans, skirts and high-waisted trousers and make them appear more luxe, it’s also a winner for the warmer months. Plus, if you just throw on a blazer and a gold chain or pair of earrings you’re ready for all those important work Zoom meetings. Keep scrolling to see how to style it then shop the top, plus some of our other favourites from Mango right now.
