I Can’t Be the Only One Obsessing Over Judy’s Outfits on Dead to Me Season 2

May 11, 2020 at 11:31PM I’ve been itching to revamp my wardrobe for weeks, and binge-watching season two of Dead to Me in the span of two days made that desire grow tenfold. In the Netflix series’s highly anticipated second installment, Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini) continues her reign as the Queen of Floral Dresses, breaking out a slew of spring-ready wrap dresses in addition to cool moto jackets, calf-high boots, and denim skirts that made me want to cartoonishly climb through my TV just so I could check her tags to learn the designer. While watching all the drama unfold in season two – and phew, there is a lot of it – I was struck with a realization about Judy’s wardrobe. Her personal style and penchant for sweet floral prints echo her bubbly, bright-side-seeking nature. What’s more is that her outfits offer a pretty stark contrast to Jen Harding’s (Christina Applegate) array of muted button-down shirts, blazers, and slacks – yet another reminder to the viewer just how opposite they really are. Whether that was the intention of Dead to Me costume designer Trayce Gigi Field, I’m not sure, but either way, she did an incredible job piecing together Judy’s carefree wardrobe, if I do say so myself. If you, too, can’t stop thinking about Judy’s cute season two outfits, I tracked down exactly where to shop some of her pieces, with a little help from the screen-style experts at Shop Your TV. The Bata Shoe Museum’s Senior Curator on Its 25th Anniversary, the Power of Shoes and More

May 11, 2020 at 10:24PM The Bata Shoe Museum may be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, but its creative director and senior curator Elizabeth Semmelhack has a momentous milestone of her own to celebrate too: 20 years working at the renowned Toronto museum. Semmelhack began working at the museum in 2000 as a curator, armed with a doctorate degree in Japanese art history. “I wasn’t exactly sure how long I would stay in footwear but I do have to say that even after 20 years there are so many questions I still want to have answered, and I have found the subject really, really interesting,” says Semmelhack over the phone. “20 years ago, and even more so when the museum opened 25 years ago, the idea that footwear was a subject for serious academic inquiry was just not on people’s radars yet,” she says. Like the mass-produced 18th century Japanese prints that she was studying before she joined the Bata Shoe Museum, shoes are created for mass consumption, a point of academic interest for Semmelhack. “I’m very interested in things that become mass consumed because those are the things that speak to a moment. Rather than a unique object that maybe is ahead of its time or only speaks to a few people, something like shoes— when they go viral or become central to constructions of gender or status—they’re doing really wide-ranging and important work that needs interrogation.” In honour of the Bata Shoe Museum’s 25th anniversary, we spoke

Four Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Workout

May 11, 2020 at 09:00PM Hi angels, We all love a good workout – getting sweaty, feeling energised, and enjoying moving your body is such a fantastic feeling! BUT if you’re not following my top tips for getting the most out of each workout, chances are you aren’t seeing the results you’re working for, or you’re not recovering properly between sessions! Give these a go today, and see the difference they make! Jess xx 1. Warm up! NEVER skip a warm up, angels! I know it can be tempting to dive straight into the high intensity part of a workout, and skip the slower warming up of your muscles, but it is essential you take even a few minutes to activate the key muscles you’ll be using, and warm your body up. This prevents injury, and actually allows you to use your muscles properly, performing movements correctly so you get more out of them! It’s so worth taking an extra few minutes to warm up! 2. Food is fuel! If you’re working out regularly, your body is going to need more food to fuel the energy it’s using in each session – and the types of food you require may be different too! Make sure you’re eating enough protein and carbohydrates each day, to replenish your body and your energy stores.  Having a post-workout meal which includes a quality source of complex carbohydrates, and a source of protein, can really help synthesise your muscles after a workout, so you’re getting

6 Canadians Reflect on How Their Mothers Influenced Their Beauty and Style Ideals

May 11, 2020 at 08:55PM Moms can impact our lives in so many ways, personal style included. So on the back of Mother’s Day weekend here in Canada, we asked a handful of locals to unravel how each of their mothers informed their tastes. Evan Ducharme, multidisciplinary Métis artist and fashion designer Photo courtesy of Evan Ducharme “Something that I think I’ve inherited from [my mom], that she inherited from her mother and grandmothers, is the importance of presenting yourself in a neat and polished manner, and never overdone: your outfit, hair and makeup aren’t wearing you. There is a sense of nonchalance that I try to replicate. I’ve also plundered her closet over the years for some of those early ’90s pieces that she doesn’t wear anymore. And never fall asleep in your makeup (which we’ve all done a time or two!). My Mom had my siblings and I when she was quite young, so once we were all old enough, she decided to go back to school to pursue a career as a health care aide. In retrospect, I think that for us to see her take that leap, while raising three kids, has imbued us with a strong work ethic and a willingness to take chances.” Stef Sanjati, transgender activist, video game streamer and former video blogger and YouTube personality View this post on Instagram I got to see the new @inkbox Queen Street store last night w my mama @breadnona and my friend @aka.samyang ? and

Match the Celebrity Stay-Home Outfit to Your Zodiac Sign and Create an Instant Mood Board

May 11, 2020 at 08:55PM Here’s a fun game to play: match the celebrity stay-home outfit to your zodiac sign and – voilà! – create your next chill look. Personally, I know I could use just about any sort of inspiration to fuel my styling capabilities at the moment, so why not be led by my horoscope? It’s true that as a Taurus, I tend to reach for the same cute little tops to pair with my sweats because I feel most comfortable in them and they also speak to my personal style. Yup, even when it comes to my wardrobe, I can be a little stubborn. Then you’ve got the romantic Cancer, who I’m sure is taking up the house dress trend right about now. There are definitely other signs, like the Leo and the Aquarius, who spark major conversations with their statement accessories via Zoom, and we’ve just come to expect that from them. Taking all these notes into consideration, I matched a celebrity outfit to each zodiac sign, so you can determine the look your soul is seeking and use it as your new go-to when the spotlight’s on you during your next video call – or even when you have nothing else to do but whip up that new recipe and read a good book. I Traded In My Sweats For These Pants, and They Feel the Freaking Same!

May 11, 2020 at 08:20PM Recently, I upgraded my loungewear collection with a number of matching sweats. Then, as much as I loved them, I hit a wall and felt like I needed to find some real pants. I think the sentiment I shared with coworkers was something like, “I have got to find some real pants.” Maybe a curse word was in there somewhere, too. I headed over to Old Navy and scrolled through over 400 pairs of pants until I found a pair that looked like they had promise. The Mid-Rise Soft-Twill Utility Pants ($25, originally $40) were exactly what I was looking for. I immediately gravitated to the drawstring – I draw the line at zippers and buttons right now – and purchased them in the army-green shade. As soon as they arrived, I ripped them out of the bag and slipped them on. I was dying to know if they’d feel stiff, soft, heavy, etc. See how they stacked up ahead!
