Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life Of Allana Davison

May 08, 2020 at 02:00PM With people around the country winding down their eighth week of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, influencers and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us. Allana Davison, beauty blogger When the lockdown first hit, I was surprised at how much it seemed to affect me mentally. I’d never experienced much in terms of anxiety or panic attacks, but started to feel overwhelmed by the sudden complete shift in our everyday lives. Seeing what was happening in other parts of the world was scary and sad, and the speed at which it all came was a lot to take in! I found myself really needing to step away from social media for the first week or two. Seeing everyone posting about their blooming productivity that they somehow dug up from the depths of their souls and in their homes; the workout routines, the cleaning, the LEARNING—it all made me feel guilty for not being on the same level! I work from home normally, so why was this affecting me SO much? I decided to shut off my phone, I took a week off from posting videos, and did completely mind-numbing activities to calm down and take my mind off of everything. I dug up my old Gameboy, downloaded Stardew Valley,

Friday Faves

May 08, 2020 at 11:17AM Hi friends! Happy Friday <3 I hope you’ve had an ok week and are enjoying the morning. This week felt like a weird one, right?! I slept horribly all week (full moon what) and got a strange rash all over my neck, torso, and one spot on my hand. My doc still isn’t sure what caused the rash but it seems to be *knock on wood* on the way out. At least it hasn’t gotten worse in 48 hours? I just didn’t need anything extra to test my character right now lol. Another piece of the week: I’ve been trying to get dressed and put on a little makeup every day. After wearing purely sweats and athletic clothes for about 7 weeks, I was just feeling blah and down. I thought if I at least put on some jean shorts each day, it might put a little pep in my step and bring a tiny smidge of normalcy (<— I cling to anything that feels the slightest bit *normal* right now). It has absolutely helped. We’re talking super casual because there’s no reason to wear a sundress and wedges while trying to teach Liv square roots (yes, they’re doing square roots in second grade) and supervise P while she pretends the house is her personal ninja course. (tank on sale // jean shorts // sandals // earrings) In the standard Friday spirit, here are some faves from the week and around the web! I always

Cauliflower Crusts + Vegan Bolognese: Is This The Future of Delivery Food?

May 08, 2020 at 10:47AM Everyone is ordering more at-home delivery lately and we’re thrilled to see a crop of plant-based restaurants crop up and fill our need for more zoodles and cauliflower pizza crusts while we’re at home. Last month, we gushed over the cauliflower sushi rice at the new delivery-only, Skinny Fish. This month, it’s the launch of Impasta, the new keto-friendly delivery restaurant serving up the kinds of plant-based noodles and pizzas we often make at home, but rarely have access to on Postmates. Here’s the skinny… What You Should Know: It’s pretty simple — Impasta is serving pasta and pizza, but instead of grain-based flours and pastas, you’ll find spiralized zucchini, spaghetti squash and shirataki noodles, as well as cauliflower-based gnocchi and pizza crust. If you are on a keto diet, this is the dream. Pasta and pizza like you haven’t been able to have in ages. If you’re not on a keto diet, just remember — while Impasta’s dishes may be plant-based, they are not dairy-free. As diet trends evolve it’s easy to confuse this kind of detail if you’re looking for grain-free, plant-based options. What We Ate: What didn’t we eat? We tried most pastas on the menu to get the full range of plant-based noodle options, plus a cauliflower crust pizza. The pizza with pesto sauce and fresh ricotta was delicious — if you like cauliflower crust (which we most certainly do). The texture is different from an Italian of NY pie, closer to

May 08, 2020 at 10:00AM Cooking more these days and feeling a little lost? I’ve got a list of helpful ingredient swaps for when you’re in a pinch and missing an ingredient! I’ve been helping out in the kitchen for as long as I can remember so getting creative in the kitchen comes naturally to me but I understand that’s not the case for everyone! I like to say that cooking is an art, not a science. Which will drive some people insane but I think it gives grace in the kitchen and allows you to experiment! Note: baking is a science and you can’t just sub and swap when you want… Since everyone is spending more time in the kitchen these days and using what ingredients they have on hand or can find in the grocery store, I wanted to share some simple ingredient swaps to help get you more comfortable in the kitchen. Wondering about a specific ingredient or a specific recipe? Drop a comment below! Happy to help. Substituting Grains So many grains can be used interchangeably. They do require different cooking times so be mindful of that but in general if a recipe calls for a certain grain, you can swap in […] The post Helpful Ingredient Swaps appeared first on The Healthy Maven. If Your Hair Is Snapping, These Are the Habits You Need to Change ASAP

May 08, 2020 at 06:30AM Over the past few weeks, it’s safe to say that we have all experienced a beauty mishap or two. From patchy, half-fallen-out lash extensions to grown-out manicures and toes that need some serious tending to, there’s no doubt that our beauty routines have recently been flipped on their heads. The biggest issues that it seems almost everyone is facing, though, are those to do with our hair.  Being unable to get out to salons means that many of us are currently facing unsightly roots and split ends and even risking at-home haircuts in a bid to better the situation. One of the most common complaints that I have come across, however, is that of hair breakage. In fact, almost everyone I have spoken to agrees that their hair seems to be snapping much more than it ever has before. Unsure whether your short strands are breakage or just baby hairs? “Loss of elasticity in hair leads to snapping. Healthy hair will be able to ping back into shape. The stress test is when it’s wet, if you pull the hair and it bounces back, it’s healthy,” says Paul Edmonds, celebrity hairstylist and official BAFTA partner. While there’s no doubt that regular trims are essential for keeping hair healthy and strong, there are some things that will help prevent further hair breakage. Keep scrolling to discover the hair habits that experts warn could be causing your strands to snap and what you can do to help. Okay, it might seem obvious, but overprocessing
