May 01, 2020 at 05:04PM Ryan Murphy’s new limited series Hollywood has finally been released on Netflix, and you probably don’t even have to watch the trailer for more than 10 seconds to know you’re going to want to soak up the glamorous 1940s fashion in this show. Ryan, who is also the master behind The Politician, brings us eight episodes filled with “what ifs?” It’s a spin on reality, forcing viewers to imagine a scenario in which the 1940s Hollywood scene looked very different. But when I spoke to Sarah Evelyn and Lou Eyrich, who collaborated on the show’s costume design, I realized just how real their references and mood board actually were. “1940s clothing is extremely difficult to find and generally really small. When it came to modern body shapes, we’d venture into made-to-order costumes.” “It was definitely based on Golden Age cinema. The idea of gold really sparked the color palette into something we called harvest tones that consisted of golden brown, caramel, pinks, purples, greens, and red. Some particular ’40s movie references included Gentleman’s Agreement, The Killers, Casablanca, Gilda, The Red Shoes, and Woman of the Year. As we looked at the characters and made the tone board, we developed style icons for each of the characters,” Sarah said, also explaining that she and Lou worked closely with the hair and makeup department on each and every look. If Ryan chose a specific hair color for a wig, for example, that would affect their work greatly.

This $6 White T-Shirt Passed My Very Tough Try-On Test, So Now I’m Buying, Like, 5 More
May 01, 2020 at 05:00PM When it comes to t-shirts, I am so freakin’ picky. I have probably purchased at least 50 white tees over the past few years, but only a few pass my series of tests and remain in my dresser. I have several t-shirt requirements: It can’t be see through. My bra should not be visible. When I wash it, the quality and fit must stay the same. The sleeves can’t be too short or too long. The fit should be stylish, not tacky or outdated. You see what I mean? Finding a perfect tee is tough. After testing out tons of options as a shopping editor, I have finally found the holy grail of white t-shirts. I picked up this Old Navy EveryWear Slub-Knit Tee ($6, originally $13) on a whim, and now I want to buy, like, five more. This shirt has gone though all the bullet points above and passed with flying colors. It looks great with jeans, skirts, trousers – you name it. This top comes in sizes XS-XXL and types regular, tall, and petite. I am wearing the regular large, and it fits true to size for reference. The design is tag-free, so there’s no annoying itchiness at your neck or side. The fabric is soft and relaxed, but not flimsy or thin. I have washed my t-shirt three times now and it remains in great condition. Is this tee woven with magic or something? Read on to get all the shopping

May 01, 2020 at 04:52PM After teaming up with Normani for a dreamy photo shoot that gave us major goddess energy, Rihanna is back for another Savage x Fenty drop with the May Spring/Summer 2020 collection. This time, the 32-year-old musician and designer used herself as a model (not that we’re complaining). The campaign shows off the singer modeling a black lingerie look from The Neon Nights Xtra VIP Box, which is curated by Rihanna and exclusively designed by Adam Selman for Savage x Fenty. She accessorized the lingerie with a pair of matching black Amina Muaddi heels. Like previous collections, the May drop comes in sizes 32A through 42H and XS through 3X. The size-inclusive line includes an array of sultry bras, panties, and slips at reasonable prices ranging from $13 to $105. Besides the sexy black number Rihanna is rocking in the stunning campaign, we particularly love the brightly colored key-lime pieces. These neon pieces are a fun way to refresh your lingerie collection if you’re looking to give your underwear drawer a pop of color. How Hollywood’s Costumers Brought the Golden Age of Cinema to Life
May 01, 2020 at 04:59PM There was no buzzier place in the late 1940s than Hollywood — it seems like everyone had dreams of being a star, lured in by the icons of the day and their captivating lives both on and off-screen. In Ryan Murphy’s new show, Hollywood, which starts streaming on Netflix tonight, a plucky cast of characters stand down adversity of all kinds to stake their claim in tinsel town, all while looking utterly fabulous doing it. That’s thanks to the work of costume designers Sarah Evelyn and Lou Eyrich, who spent weeks researching and conceiving of looks ranging from the every day to special occasions and major events. “I hadn’t done forties before,” Evelyn tells FASHION, adding that the task was not only to replicate the key styles of the time, but also “to wrap our heads around Ryan’s vision of the forties.” This undertaking involved a collaboration with fashion historian Raissa Bretaña, who assisted Evelyn and Eyrich in deciding how to approach the show’s outfits with authenticity, panache and correctness in interpreting any etiquette considerations of the time. “[She] helped comb through Women’s Wear Daily and Emily Post,” says Evelyn of the process, which was an arduous one to say the least. “A lot of this information wasn’t even in pictures, it was written at the time.” Imagery courtesy of Netflix. While it’s easy to take for granted the sartorial liberties we presently enjoy, in the forties there was much going on above and beyond simple

This Sandal Trend Is Everywhere This Year
May 01, 2020 at 04:10PM There are certain sandal trends that remain constant—among them leather slides, two-strap black leather, and sturdy Birkenstocks at the beach. However, one of 2020’s top sandal trends is a bit more left-field. This season, practically all of the key sandals feature an angular square toe. By Far and Jacquemus kick-started the look, but Bottega Veneta has officially put them on the style agenda with its sellout, angular-toe mules. That said, you don’t necessarily need a designer budget to get in on the trend. If you still need convincing, take a look at the inspiring outfits featuring square-toe sandals below. Then, proceed to see our edit of the best square-toe sandals. Aldo’s Cinderella Glass Slipper Collection Includes Heels For the Evil Stepsisters, Too
May 01, 2020 at 04:00PM There have been so many iconic Cinderella moments in fashion history (remember when Zendaya literally dressed up like the Disney princess for the Met Gala?), but to celebrate the film’s 70th anniversary, Aldo is releasing something special. The new collection, which, in full includes heels, little PVC box bags, gemstone-clad barrettes, headbands, and “clock strikes 12” lucite earrings, ranges from $18 to $100. While this means there’s a new version of the glass slipper in town, Aldo offers it in two different variations, one clear with rhinestones and the other in a pale blue reminiscent of Cinderella’s ballgown. Adorably, both come imprinted with metallic writing on the soles, “If the shoe fits . . . ” But my favorite aspect of this new line has to be the Stepsister, a two-strap mule that comes in pink, clear, and chartreuse, complete with a triangular-shaped stiletto to make that extra bold, sassy statement that aligns with the infamous characters. Trust me, you’d be hard-pressed to find Cinderella-inspired collections with something there for the stepsisters, and I’m so glad that Aldo is finally translating their badass-ery style with a sandal. Read ahead to check out the statement heels in this affordable collection, then shop the rest of the range over at Aldo. Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life of Maria Qamar aka Hatecopy
May 01, 2020 at 03:50PM As people around the country wind down their seventh week of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, athletes and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us. Maria Qamar, artist The “pandemic panic” set in a few weeks into our national isolation when I lost one of my heroes in the same week that celebrities began to get strangely tone-deaf on social media. I decided it was time to log off. Best decision ever. Even before the virus, I would spend months in front of my monitor or my canvas tinkering away at things that may or may not make it out of the studio, with no co-workers, no boss and no one to shake me awake when my ten-minute mid-day nap turned into four hours. My friends and family live out of town, so I was typically never motivated to leave my apartment. Once I had completed a large project during the isolation period, I would take a deep breath and finally step outside. Often, I would travel to the other side of the world to get away from the feeling of work for a few months. Then I’d come right back to the studio and isolate again. This has been my cycle for the past half decade. View this
