My Story: Brand Founder Témi Shobowale on Beauty Standards, Authenticity and the Power of Diversity Behind the Scenes

June 09, 2020 at 10:45PM Meet Témi Shobowale, a Nigerian-born, Toronto-based professional makeup artist and entrepreneur, who is also the founder of skincare line Essentials by Temi and HerDay, a series of local meet-up events geared towards bringing together and uplifting women. Here, she shares, in her own words, her beauty brand’s story, biggest inspirations and what she hopes transpires from the large outpouring of support for the Black Lives Matter movement. On where she grew up: “I was born in Nigeria and my family immigrated to the United States when I was about eight. I’ve always grown up in and around predominantly Black neighbourhoods. Like, when we first moved to the States, we lived in the hood in Detroit, Michigan. Then we moved to Maryland, which was definitely a step up from Detroit. I eventually came out to Toronto in 2008.” On what sparked her love for beauty: “My love for beauty started with my mom, and it’s a double edged sword that goes deep. My mom was really into beauty, and anyone in my family would tell you that, when I was younger, I used to always run around in my mom’s Christian Dior red lipstick. I would sneak into her room and into her makeup kit. She always had fancy stuff that she would get when she travelled, all these different perfumes. Dior’s J’Adore is her favourite scent. She’s just a Dior person. Red lipstick and Dior Beauty is something I just noticed about her my entire

Fenty Celebrates “Freedom, Diversity, Unity, and Solidarity” With Its Latest Campaign

June 09, 2020 at 10:12PM Rihanna‘s luxury brand Fenty is back with its new collection. The singer released her latest campaign imagery, which was taken by London-based photographer Lea Colombo. It features models, artists, and musicians who “embody the bright spark energy of the release.” The collection, called “Release 6-20,” will be released in three separate drops across June, starting with Drop 1, which will be available on Fenty’s website on June 11. “In a time where fighting for global freedoms takes center stage, this release speaks to a generation that is a different kind of creative, and a different kind of rebellious,” the brand’s press release stated. The collection is inspired by “decades of youth aesthetics and styles that emerged during periods of steep social change, each part of the month-long release celebrates a different facet of youth, expressed through varied style cues.” If you look at the imagery, you’ll notice psychedelic prints and many ’90s subculture references throughout the collection. We saw some of our favorite nostalgic trends like tie-dye prints, baggy rave silhouettes, grunge hoodies, and formfitting asymmetric dresses showcased. Keep reading to see the gorgeous imagery from the campaign, then come back on June 11 to shop the first drop. 22 Black Fashion Photographers Who Will Make Your Feed a Stylish, Imaginative Place

June 09, 2020 at 10:11PM Just like us, you’re probably always focused on updating your Instagram feed so you’re following the latest and greatest. We did our research and pulled together a list of Black fashion photographers who are behind some of the biggest campaigns you’ve admired from the likes of Nike, Prada, and Adidas. They also capture runway images and shoot editorials for major mags like i-D, Paper, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue, all while telling their own stories. Ahead, you’ll find people like Tyler Mitchell, who, at 23, was the first Black photographer in history to shoot the cover of American Vogue – and it was Beyoncé’s September issue, no less. Then there’s Darrel Hunter, the face behind street style site ModeHunter, which you probably follow regularly during Fashion Week. Some of these artists – who are also filmmakers, directors, and stylists, BTW – are currently showcasing their own exhibitions, have published or are working on their own books (we see you, Mahaneela Choudhury-Reid and Shaniqwa Jarvis!), and are focused on advancing and representing the Black community now more than ever. POPSUGAR reached out to all of the photographers here, and many of them submitted quotes about current projects, i.e. how they’re spending time at home, and missions they want to share with the world. Scroll through to hear their voices and get to know them through their powerful images and words. Have a favorite photographer who’s not on the list but should be? Drop me a line and

How to Give Yourself the Ultimate At-Home Pedicure

June 09, 2020 at 09:11PM If there is one thing that I have learned about myself during this period of social distancing, it’s that I really don’t take enough care of myself. As a beauty editor, this can be a hard thing to admit. You see, I do actually dedicate an hour every evening to a rather luxurious bathing session, and my twice-daily skincare routine is quite lengthy and excessive, but when it comes to just about anything else, I’m useless. Sadly, unless I have an appointment booked to remind me, everything from my brows to my nails gets totally neglected. One area in particular that I have found myself turning a blind eye to recently is my feet. Sure, I give them a good slathering of foot cream after my nightly bath and keep my nails in check as best as I can, but am I really giving them the time and love they need? Absolutely not. Usually, at this stage, I’d book myself in for a thorough pedicure. However, with salons closed, I have had to take matters into my own hands. In a bid to get my tootsies ready for summer, I reached out to my all-round nail guru (and celebrity nail artist) Jenni Draper to take me through, step by step, how to carry out the perfect at-home pedicure. This is the part of a DIY pedi that I am always keen to forgo due to its fuss and length. The truth is, though, prepping the skin on your feet is crucial

Rocky Barnes on Her New Collaboration with ALDO

June 09, 2020 at 08:53PM Late last month, Canadian footwear giant ALDO unveiled its newest collaboration with global style icon, Rocky Barnes. The collection is comprised of four footwear styles, each of which appear to have been designed for stylish summer sojourns in far-flung locales – but the good news is that each style will work equally as well for your next socially distanced BBQ or walk to the grocery. “When designing this collection, I wanted to not only make amazing shoes, I also wanted them to be comfortable,” Barnes tells us of one of her key drivers during the design process, adding that quarantine has reaffirmed her commitment to comfortable pieces. “I think comfort has always been important and post-quarantine [will be] even more so. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to start dressing up again, but even then comfort will be key.” Barnes worked closely with the team at its Montreal HQ (pre-COVID) to create her “dream summer capsule collection.” As for the jumping off point, Barnes said she “pulled ideas for the collection from styles I find myself wearing over and over again. I then added unique details to each to make them my own – from the silk rope ties to the gold shell details, marbled acrylic square heel and lizard embossing.” Thanks to the collaborative nature of the design process with the ALDO team, Barnes says her vision was brought to life. <div class="sjm-attachment-carousel–header gallery-container–default" data-slick='{"speed":400,"adaptiveHeight":true,"variableWidth":false,"centerMode":true,"centerPadding":"0","slidesToShow":1,"lazyLoad":"ondemand","prevArrow":"Previous”,”nextArrow”:”Next”}’ data-simplemodal=’false’ > 1/13 Capri High Heel Sandal ($80,
