June 17, 2020 at 11:55PM Five years ago today, Maggie Nichols’ gymnastic coach submitted the first report of doctor Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse of gymnasts to officials at USA Gymnastics. More than 300 women would eventually come forward to accuse Nassar of sexually abusing them under the guise of providing medical treatment during athletic training. The trailer for Athlete A, a new Netflix documentary that follows The Indianapolis Star‘s investigation into USA Gymnastics, details the events that occurred after survivors broke their silence. George Floyd, whose life was tragically cut short by police officers, has finally been laid to rest in his hometown of Houston. Protesters all over America are still in the streets, calling for justice in his case, as well as for Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Iyanna Dior and many, many others. Everything feels broken, and people are tired. While it’s still Pride month, members of the community are using their platforms to speak out about the injustices that plague BIPOC people and the LGBTQIA+ community. To kick off the celebrations at Hearst, Hearst Black Culture hosted a conversation with Ryan Jamaal Swain, an actor in the hit TV show Pose. Swain is no stranger to using his platform. But more than anything, it left me craving a second season that will make sense of the show’s wild final episode. The series follows the socioeconomic warfare between the elite Kooks and working class Pogues in the North Carolina region known as Outer Banks. “It’s the sort of place where you either have two jobs or two houses,” the show’s trailer explains. “Two tribes, one island.” At the show’s center is a treasure hunt for $400 million aboard a sunken ship. Along the way, there are love triangles and murder motives to satisfy all your horny and vindictive urges. If you, too, found yourself invested in a show that somehow satisfies your One Tree Hill, The Goonies, and Gossip Girl obsessions, here’s everything you need to know about a potential second season.
