June 19, 2020 at 02:00PM Set in the idyllic forest where her Laurentian-area home is situated, designer Noemie Vaillancourt’s brand Noemiah posted a Richmond Lam-directed video this week to showcase her new pieces under the collection name ‘Fleur de Peau’. “I live in the woods with my boyfriend, and the video was filmed around here,” says Vaillancourt, adding she still has a studio in Montreal where here made-to-order pieces are crafted. “We wanted to capture the essence of the collection and what I see when I design.” Vaillancourt’s starting point for the array of charming garments, which feature a print designed in collaboration with artist Paule T.B., came from reading a Dominique Fortier book about Emily Dickinson, and Vaillancourt’s subsequent discovery of Dickinson’s herbarium. A floral motif swirls on garments like a billowing smock dress and a scalloped collar done in a decadent silk organza. The lookbook for the collection was photographed by Naomie Tremblay, and the photographer can be seen in the recently uploaded video. “The ladies in the film are my friends and collaborators,” says Vaillancourt, who has also worked with Montreal-based creative Estée Preda for her designs. Being surrounded by nature has made Vaillancourt more contemplative about the future of her brand, which was founded almost 12 years ago. In addition to working with sustainable fabrics and specifically tailoring designs for her customers (Noemiah currently offers a size range up to 4x), Vaillancourt says she’s always thinking about “what I want and what I don’t want for

Kate Middleton Dresses Casually in Skinny Jeans, Vest, and Sneakers for First In-Person Event Since Quarantine
June 19, 2020 at 02:01PM The coronavirus pandemic is not over, but in a testament to the UK’s progress in containing the virus, Kate Middleton went out for her first in-person event today. The Duchess of Cambridge visited the Fakenham Garden Centre in Norfolk to talk with its owners and staff about how the center has been affected by COVID-19. The center is close to the Duchess’s country home, Anmer Hall, where she, Prince William, and their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are quarantining. Kate dressed casually for her visit, pairing skinny jeans with a Jaeger mint button-up, Fjällräven brown vest, and dark green sneakers. Kate did not wear a mask; she did, however, appear to keep about six feet apart from the people she spoke to: centre owners Martin and Jennie Turner and members of their staff. The CDC and WHO recommend that people wear a mask in public where there is widespread community transmission of COVID-19 to help prevent its spread. This applies especially in cases where six feet of separation between people cannot be maintained, although the WHO defers to local authorities to instate area policies. Kate spoke about the feelings of frustration that come with being in quarantine, telling the kids: “We all have our ups and downs, especially when things change in our lives
Inside the Movement to Make Juneteenth a Nationally Recognized Holiday
June 19, 2020 at 02:00PM The first enslaved African people were brought to stolen Indigenous land in August 1619. From that day onward, Black Americans and their allies have fought a relentless battle against white supremacy that included property damage, harrowing freedom escapes, armed rebellions, and more. It’s important that we name this truth: Black people have always been invested in and actively working toward our own liberation. On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, yet this message wouldn’t make it to Texas until June 19, 1865. Only then were all formerly enslaved Black Americans notified of their freedom. The first Juneteenth celebration was organized in 1866 and has often been commemorated through the building of political power (early events doubled as voting rallies) or pooling resources for land purchases, such as modern-day Emancipation Park in Houston, Texas. RELATED STORY The Storied History of Juneteenth It’s essential that we understand the context around Juneteenth and how hard Black Americans have always had to fight for our just due. That even when laws are passed outlawing racist practices, those laws are ignored. That we rise from the ashes, more glorious and more committed to our freedom than we previously thought was possible. That our celebrations are vehicles for chipping away at the project of white supremacy. It’s that legacy of resilience we celebrate, one that should cause the entire country to pause and show reverence. This year, Bay Area-based collective HellaCreative is working to make sure people across the country do just that. So far
Resettling as a Refugee During a Global Pandemic
June 19, 2020 at 01:00PM Ahmad Wali’s journey to America was years in the making, but what he remembers most vividly is how time froze when they were in the air. The Afghan-born Wali had finally secured a Special Immigrant Visa, affording him permanent legal residence in the United States, and to reach America, Wali and his family took a local plane to Kabul, followed by an international flight to Dubai and a 15-hour flight to New York. The trans-Atlantic flight lasted for what seemed like an eternity. He and his kids played games, took naps, ate snacks, paced the cramped aisles between the rows of seats, and still had hours remaining. When they finally landed and made it through customs, Wali felt indescribably happy. He remembers thinking, “I’m one of the luckiest people to be in the U.S., because my family is safe. My life is safe.” First issued in 2006, Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) have been granted to approximately 20,000 local nationals and their families who face threats in Iraq or Afghanistan as a result of their service to U.S. forces. Ben Wormington, a marine who enlisted after 9/11, worked alongside local translators on each of his three deployments to Iraq. “Interpreters are like glasses,” Wormington says. “They bring everything into focus.” Wormington relied heavily on local nationals to provide clarity on the landscape, the attitude of civilians, and when something is amiss—for example, when not to trust a local due to an obscure tattoo indicating prior nefarious
Friday Faves
June 19, 2020 at 11:29AM Hi friends! Happy Friday to ya. I hope that you’ve had a good week. We’ve just been doing our thing over here. Lots of time at home and at the pool. I’m thankful to have a way to tire out the kiddos when we’ve been mostly inside. We’ve also been making tons of Perler bead creations (the girls are obsessed) and finding ways to stay buy. To shake up my routine a bit, I took a Peloton yoga class and it was everything I needed. It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party. This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below! Read, watch, listen: This important podcast episode from my favorite podcast guy. Shaun dives deeply into his personal story, systemic racism and racial profiling, and action steps we can take. What books have you read lately? A friend lent me We Were the Lucky Ones and after taking a break from historical fiction, I’m sucked into this one. It’s beautifully-written and I’ll probably finish it this weekend. Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Since I finished Queer Eye (so sad when it was over), I’m back into Season 3 of Maisel. If you haven’t watched this one yet, I highly recommend it. It’s light, witty, and the costumes are insane. Fashion + beauty: Equilibria bath bombs!! My friends at Equilibria
How Can Seniors Improve Their Immune Systems?
June 19, 2020 at 11:28AM The immune system is the body’s best defense against illnesses. As we age, our bodies become more vulnerable to germs and illnesses. Seniors have fewer immune cells and take longer to recover from injuries and infections. By improving their immune systems, older adults can give themselves the best fighting chance against viral diseases. Father’s Day with the Hotelier Behind the New Hotel June
June 19, 2020 at 11:09AM We’re obsessed with the Proper Hotel in Santa Monica (enter to win a two-night stay at The Proper here!). Before the quarantine began, our team spent one day a week minimum inside the Proper’s stunning, design-forward lobby and, now, the hotel group is opening another hotel just around the corner. We asked Proper Hospitality’s Brian De Lowe to talk to us about the exciting new project and to dish with us about what is means to him to be a father as Dad’s Day 2020 is just a few days away. As it turns out the baby boom of 2020 is well underway — De Lowe happens to be married to one of our own, wellness maven and manifestation coach, Jessie de Lowe and the couple is expecting baby number two in just a few months. Here’s Brian on design, dad-ing and all the rest… finish this sentence: Being a father is… The ultimate sense of purpose. For me, life has always been about creating great memories and having unique experiences. My incredible wife, Jessie, agrees. As soon as our daughter Amelie (who turns 3 on Father’s Day this year!) entered our life, my priorities became extremely clear – there is nothing better than the wonderful amazing experiences and happy memories that we share together as a family. Best travel + hotel advice for parents: Do it early and do it often. Jessie and I decided to start traveling with Amelie when she was just a few months old

The Best Natural Tinted Moisturizers
June 19, 2020 at 10:00AM I feel like “tinted moisturizers” are having a moment. Especially now that we’re all home and not wanting a full coverage face of makeup. They add a nice even layer to the skin without feeling like you have something super heavy on it. In general, they’re lighter coverage than foundation and tend to have additional skin benefits (other than just coverage). So to help you guys out in your clean tinted moisturizer journey, I thought I’d round up my favorite natural tinted moisturizers and what you should be looking for in products. Types of Tinted Moisturizers “Tinted moisturizer” is pretty much a broad term for a light layer coverage skincare product. They often go by a couple of different names and occasionally also have SPF (woot!). You’ll notice a lot of crossover with my natural facial sunscreen post because many tinted moisturizers include SPF and many facial sunscreens have a layer of coverage. Twice the bang for your buck! Let’s look at a couple different names for natural tinted moisturizers. Tinted moisturizer – This is exactly as it sounds: face moisturizer with a tint. It’s typically pretty sheer coverage and depending on the product, may or may not include SPF. […] The post The Best Natural Tinted Moisturizers appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Charlotte Tilbury Actually Heard Us—Magic Cream Light Is Finally Here
June 19, 2020 at 06:30AM Before we get into this, if you haven’t been following the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream (£75) journey over the years, let me summarise it for you very quickly. For many years, Charlotte Tilbury’s iconic Magic Cream has been heralded by many as one of the most plumping, glow-giving priming moisturisers of all time. The majority of people love it (including lots of Charlotte’s celebrity clients) and swear by it for a healthy-looking glow. However, it’s rich. So wonderful and rich, in fact, that those with super-oily skin, like mine, really can’t touch it without risking a grease-induced breakout. And for years, the oily skinned felt wronged by this lack of acknowledgement. We too wanted to reap the glowy, plumping benefits of Magic Cream, just without the grease. So when the brand launched Charlotte’s Magic Serum Crystal Elixir back in April, I thought we finally had what we had been asking for. It gives lightweight, skin-perfecting hydration and glow and delivers a whole bunch of skin-loving ingredients while it works. Sure, I totally understood at the time that the instant glow-boosting effects weren’t quite up to par with the original Magic Cream, but it was certainly a step in the right direction. Suki Waterhouse has been known to opt for Magic Cream as a pre–red carpet skin boost. However, a few weeks ago, a Charlotte Tilbury parcel turned up at my door. I had a pencil in my diary for a Zoom webinar to celebrate a new launch from the brand the week
