Do You Follow FIFO? How To Be Smart About Stocking A Low-Waste Kitchen

July 01, 2020 at 11:00AM The capsule wardrobe concept has been trending for a while now. And we actually think the ‘capsule’ concept applies well to our pantries right now too. Paring back a kitchen pantry to the sustainable basics can have a profound effect on our health, our wallets — and even our sense of well-being. Whether you’re cooking for yourself, a family on a tight budget at home right now, or are fortunate enough to have a full, but messy pantry and are looking to reset, here are a few tips from TCM contributor, Maya Feller, MS, RD, CDN on keeping a low-waste, but highly functional pantry… Building a pantry has always been important. These days, a well-stocked pantry — along with fresh foods — can provide a sense of security amidst uncertain times. Swap out any of my recommendations for pantry staples for the next best option you have on hand or prefer! Follow FIFO | FIFO means ‘first in – first out’. It’s so easy for fresh foods — especially fruits and veggies — to go bad before we have a chance to use them. Don’t let that dissuade you from shopping fresh! Plan meals so that you use what you have in the order you acquired it. Freeze, blend or cook | To minimize food waste, many items can also be frozen or repurposed. + Grapes and apples that appear to be on their last legs can be blended into juice or cooked down on the stovetop and used

Lean legs barre workout (video)

July 01, 2020 at 11:10AM Sharing a barre video workout you can do at home, featuring some of my very favorite exercises for lean, strong legs. All you need is something sturdy to hold onto for balance, like a chair or countertop. Hi friends! How’s the morning going? I hope you’re hanging in there with everything going on. We had a good weekend here at home and cranked away at the master bedroom. We’re completely re-doing it and I ended up selling our furniture way faster than expected on Facebook marketplace. We’re sleeping camp-style until the missing pieces get here. I didn’t realize that I still had paint and dirt all over my feet until I started filming this barre video. I hope you love this one! I included some of my very favorite exercises for lean, strong legs. This one is a little over 30 minutes and flew.by. My legs were pleasantly sore the next day, too. Lean legs barre workout (video) Here’s the full follow-along video! You can combine this with last week’s Barre Arms and Core video for an hour-long workout. Please let me know if you give it a try and leave any workout video requests in the comments! July Journal Prompts

July 01, 2020 at 10:00AM “Discomfort”, a word I keep hearing swirling around me. This past month has brought up a lot of feelings of discomfort for people in many different ways. If you’re not used to not being able to resolve discomfort, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed. So many of my yoga classes were focused on discomfort and how to sit with it, push through it and what we can learn from it. The reality is that the crises (multiple!) we are facing will take time to resolve. There is no conclusion, solution or answer. So learning to sit with discomfort while also pushing forward is becoming a theme in my life. That’s why this month’s theme is dedicated to discomfort. 10 Journal Prompts for Discomfort 1. What does discomfort mean to you? 2. What are your first memories of discomfort? 3. Where do you feel discomfort, physically? 4. How do you typically deal with feeling uncomfortable? 5. When was the last time you walked through a hard period of life where the only way out was through? 6. Who/what brings you encouragement during discomfort? 7. Write an affirmation that you can come back to when working through feelings of discomfort. 8. […] The post July Journal Prompts appeared first on The Healthy Maven. This “Boring” Dress Is Set to Be Summer’s #1 Buy

July 01, 2020 at 06:07AM Fashion decrees that everyone should own at least one little black dress, but there’s an equally viable case to be made for the little white dress. Not that it has to be little (especially if you’re wearing your LWD in the city rather than at the beach), but as long as it’s crisp and bright white, then you’re good to go. There’s just something unapologetically spring-like and optimistic about this shade, be it lacy and whimsical or linen and minimalist. What’s more, the basic warm-weather staple was a pretty big deal on the spring/summer 2020 runways. “Much like the majority of the new-season collections, here we have another summer staple, but one that designers have reimagined with in line with the ‘keep it simple but never boring’ mantra,” says Who What Wear UK’s editor, Emma Spedding. “Valentino opened its show with several white cotton dresses, Loewe showed beautifully draped midis and Jonathan Simkhai’s white maxi dress is pure perfection.” In short, they’re all the rage right now. Below, you’ll find an edit of the best white dresses to invest in now that’ll see you through the summer. Before that, however, feast your eyes on the ways influencers wear their little white dresses for all the white dress outfit inspiration you need. Puffy sleeves are always a good idea—particularly on white dresses.  Wear mini hemlines with sheer tights now.   Don’t be afraid to contrast your white dress with black accessories.  Metallic accessories will take your little

These Hairstyles Will Take Years Off Your Face

July 01, 2020 at 06:00AM I don’t know about you but the past 101 days has felt long. I’ve got more grey hair, more wrinkles, and despite going to bed earlier, I’m still tired. There’s no denying that I’ve felt like I’ve aged faster in lockdown. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this (I have no issues with changing hair colour or a few lines on my face), the speed at which it has happened has been a little disconcerting. I want to feel like myself again—and for me that means getting a haircut.  Over the past few months I’ve lost count of the amount of people who have said their hair needs cutting. From my husband to my colleagues as well as my parents, the want to get a chop has been strong. Personally, I’m desperate to get my hair cut back into a bob—I want to feel like that new and improved version that always comes post-chop. I don’t think I’d be exaggerating to say that we’re all looking to hairdressers to give us back our former selves—who we looked like pre-lockdown with a cherry on top.  With this in mind, I spoke to two hair stylists—Peter Burkill and Efi Davies on the haircuts to go for now restrictions have been eased. And which cuts will makes us look and feel more youthful, to combat all the accelerated ageing we feel like we’ve undergone (even if that’s not the case).  First, however, it’s important to assess your hair before you even

The ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s Trends That Are Selling Like Crazy

July 01, 2020 at 05:00AM It’s true: What comes around tends to go back around eventually. Since we know that fashion is cyclical in nature, it should come as no surprise when we see trends resurrect themselves from the past—sometimes from decades in the past. Designers are always revisiting the archives in order to reinvent the wheel for the seasons to come, fixating on one decade or period of time before moving onto the next. In the past several years alone, we’ve cycled through ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s fashion trends, cherry-picking which silhouettes and motifs to bring into the present-day. The great thing about vintage clothing is that if you hold onto an item for long enough, you might just see it come back into the style spotlight again. Or, like me, you can take to raiding the wardrobes of your parents and grandma to borrow the original versions and source even more from vintage stores (coincidentally also the most sustainable way to shop). Once such vintage retailer is The RealReal and its Head of Women’s Clothing Sasha Skoda, who is sharing the exact trends from these past three decades that are selling better than any others right now. Continue on to see (and shop) them all. Scarves: According to the data that Skoda shared, searches for scarves are up a whopping 162% and that the resale value is also on the rise, correlating with the current overall ’70s trend. We’ve seen fashion girls styling silk scarves in creative ways, from tying them up “babushka” style over their heads to knotting them around their neck and even wearing them

This $25 Floral T-Shirt Dress Is the Best Thing I’ve Bought All Summer

July 01, 2020 at 12:54AM I’m someone who loves spending time outside. Whether I’m chatting with neighbors or walking my dog, I love a good healthy dose of vitamin D when I can schedule it in. Now that it’s consistently hot outside, I realized I needed to find more warm-weather outfits that were easy to put together. Sure I could go for denim shorts or my biker shorts, but I always feel like I have to put a lot of effort into styling; I wanted to find something more turnkey. I set out to find the perfect Summer dress and set a few rules before I started shopping: the dress had to have a fun print (prints just make me happy), it couldn’t hug my waist (nothing more uncomfortable than being hot in a dress that’s also tight), and it had to be machine washable (dry cleaning is for the birds). It didn’t take long before I found it: the Old Navy Jersey Swing Dress ($25) checked all my boxes. I took a look at the fabric before ordering (a mix of rayon and spandex) and decided to actually order down a size, which sounds crazy considering I wanted to find an easy-going and roomy dress, but it ended up being the right move. The dress fits exactly like a t-shirt up top and is relaxed through the body with a flared hem that swings out as you walk, so there is a ton of space to move around. I
