#PullUp For These Fashion Brands, Because They’re All Giving Back to the Black Community

June 02, 2020 at 05:51PM Now more than ever it is our duty to support the Black community and, as a fashion site, we vow to be a resource for you. From the smallest start, like following Black fashion influencers, to greater efforts, like shopping and supporting designers and brands that need business, we can encourage change within the fashion industry. One of the first questions I had was “where can I donate?” I’m happy to see that a lot of fashion designers, houses, and labels are taking first steps, not only to pledge a donation but to share with followers how much they are willing to give and especially where they are dedicated to sharing a portion of their funds. It’s important to note that a lot of the businesses listed here, all of which are considering ways to help, have been deeply affected by the COVID-19 crisis and continue to struggle. By shopping from the brands listed ahead, we can help these companies sustain their finances while also contributing to the Black lives matter movement through their platforms. Read on to check out the pledges we’ve gathered, and please send an email if you’re aware of other brands that should be included on this list. Rihanna Shuts Down Sales on All Three of Her Fenty Brands in Honor of Blackout Tuesday

June 02, 2020 at 05:27PM   Rihanna has paused production on her three lucrative brands—cosmetics company Fenty Beauty, lingerie line Savage x Fenty, and LVMH-helmed luxury line Fenty—in response to the ongoing protests demanding justice for George Floyd and Black victims of police brutality in America. The star took to social media to share that she and her businesses would be participating in Blackout Tuesday, a social media campaign that encourages the public to cease posting personal content and instead educate themselves on the Black Lives Matter movement, amplify Black voices, and support Black-owned brands. The purpose of the campaign is not only to continue to bring awareness to the unjust murder of George Floyd but also to showcase the power of the Black dollar and how Black Americans have vital spending power in the country. “We ain’t buying shit!!! and we ain’t selling shit neither!! gang gang! #BLACKOUTTUESDAY AF!!!” wrote Rihanna on Twitter and Instagram, posted with the campaign’s adopted image of a black square. TV Cops Are Donating Their Earnings to Support the Black Lives Matter Protesters

June 02, 2020 at 05:00PM ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ star Stephanie Beatriz is among the actors raising funds to help pay bail for people put in jail. op dramas are as American as apple pie. For more than half a century, Hollywood has shaped our collective understanding, and general high opinion, of police work. As an excellent reported series from the Washington Post pointed out in 2016, “police pressure, government regulation and censorship helped mold pop culture’s stories about the police.” As such, it has become the norm that law enforcement is almost always positioned as the heroes in shows such as Law & Order, NYPD Blue, The Shield, and CSI. And this week, as peaceful protests and violent outbursts spread throughout the nation in response to police brutality and the killing of George Floyd by a law enforcement officer, Vulture‘s Kathryn VanArendonk wrote about the popularity of fictional cops set against this grim context. “TV has long had a police’s-eye perspective that helps shape the way viewers see the world,” she wrote, “prioritizing the victories and struggles of police over communities being policed.” Many Americans associate police work with the moral high ground and the fictional officers they see in beloved shows like NCIS, Law & Order, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, CSI, Chicago PD, Blue Bloods, and going all the way back to Dragnet. Now, some actors who have benefitted from that paradigm, playing law enforcement individuals, are giving their residuals to help free those who have been jailed while protesting.
