5 It Pieces From the Early 2000s That We’re All Still Wearing

June 02, 2020 at 06:00AM I think everyone must have been freezing during the early ’00s, as there was an overwhelmingly popular trend for wearing the shortest of crop tops with the lowest riding jeans. While I can definitely see the appeal in this outfit at the time, looking back, there’s no denying that it looks pretty dated. Thankfully, that trend is not one we’re still wearing today. But I can’t say the same for a few other It pieces that were total winners during the time. In 2020, there have been quite a few trends we all loved back then that have found their way into our wardrobes. From halter-necks to clutch bags to combat trousers, I’ve detailed five of the biggest trends we loved during the early ’00s and how we’re wearing them now. Then: The slip-dress trend of the ’90s definitely influenced the halter-necks of the ’00s. Of course, Kate Moss knew how to make it look incredible by layering her white low-cut halter under a lace skirt.  Now: Anything goes with halter-necks in 2020. Clash bold printed tops with brightly coloured trousers, or opt for my personal favourite—a high-neck halter, which looks very chic paired with a bright prink blazer.  Then: Of course, the Olsens knew the clutch bag was cool. While some trends definitely should have stayed in the early ’00s (crotchless jeans, we’re looking at you), the clutch is one that will always look sophisticated. Now: Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll

The Most “Fashion” Shoes, Dress and Top of Summer 2020

June 02, 2020 at 06:00AM When writing our spring/summer 2020 trend report, we never could have anticipated the way life as we know it would change. While many of the buyers’ predictions about holiday clothes and wedding guest outfits are now irrelevant in the current climate, there are several items that are proving to be just as popular, despite not being able to be worn outside.  “The large majority of the runway collections have been incredibly wearable, the brands have showcased the ultimate wardrobing heroes in a new and interesting way: the suit, the Bermuda short, the white shirt, the tank top,” said Elizabeth von der Goltz, global buying director at Net-a-Porter, back in December.  There has been a shift toward simplicity rather than anything too attention-seeking within fashion circles, partly driven by the industry’s heightened focus on sustainability. There are three classic items in particular that editors, buyers and influencers are still embracing for the summer and are still easy to wear inside and for daily walks: platform flip-flops, puff-sleeved dresses and elegant polo shirts.  Keep scrolling to see and shop the “fashion” shoes, dress, and top of summer 2020.  When it comes to sandals this year, the “fashion” shoe of the year is without a doubt platform flip-flops. We can thank Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and The Row’s Ginza flip-flops for the return of this ’90s style.  Puff-sleeved minidresses were the silhouette of 2019, and they’re staying firmly put for 2020. As our lifestyles have all rapidly changed, we are looking for clothes that are comfortable and easy

This Nightie Is the Perfect Throw-On Dress for Afternoons In the Park

June 02, 2020 at 05:44AM Despite our increased amount of time spent indoors, our appetite for pretty dresses certainly hasn’t settled down. Many are now retiring their loungewear and leggings, and a throw-on dress is the easiest way to ‘get dressed’ but still feel relaxed at home. Enter the brand of choice—Sleeper. This brand was founded as a pyjama label, and so naturally they create the comfiest nightie-style dresses around.  Sleeper’s most popular dresses have puffy short sleeves and loos like something straight out of a Victorian nursery tale. The brand has updated the traditional white nightdress with bold colours and pretty prints, such as florals and pretty polka dots. We’re especially taken aback by the dusty-pink version. The Instagram crowd proves that this nightie is the perfect throw-on dress for days working at home in the heat, or socially distanced picnics. Perfect for those days when you can’t waste any time deciding what to wear. Style Notes: Dress the linen maxi up with heels and a statement bag. Style Notes: This Atlanta midi dress is perhaps our favourite dress for summer.  Style Notes: Another look at the Atlanta midi…  Style Notes: We told you the gingham print was pretty.  Style Notes: You can push the sleeves down for a more off-the-shoulder look like Emma.  Next up, see our guide to the key trends for spring summer 2020.  Opening Image: Getty Author Emma Spedding | Whowhatwear Selected by CWC

Actions We Are Taking to Support Black Lives Matter

June 02, 2020 at 02:26AM I have to start by saying that I feel uncomfortable. I feel uncomfortable that I will say the wrong thing. I feel uncomfortable that I haven’t said something already. I feel uncomfortable…nay outraged… that a Black Man was murdered by a Minneapolis Police Officer (with the silent compliancy of several others) in cold blood. I feel uncomfortable that despite this not being the first case of police brutality in this country that it took me this long to say something. I feel uncomfortable that despite not engaging in racist activities I have benefitted from a system based on a foundation of racial inequality at the expense of Black lives. I feel uncomfortable. I feel sad. I feel angry. And I recognize that my emotions pale in comparison to those of Black Americans who face injustice every single day. I may be uncomfortable but I will show up in spite of this discomfort because it’s a privilege to feel uncomfortable. This is not about me or my discomfort. Image by @blessthemessy If you’re a white person, you may have heard the phrase “do the work”. If you were like me you don’t fully understand what that means or where to start… until you actually step in and do the work. Then it starts to make sense. Doing your own work means diving into some tough questions and reflections. It means uncovering that you may be compliant with racism without overtly engaging in it. It means listening to Black voices

Standing In Solidarity + Resources For Change

June 02, 2020 at 01:02AM We stand in solidarity with our black readers, friends and community members at this time of tremendous pain. Our nation has been reeling with accounts of grave injustice within our criminal justice system over the last decade, made all the more traumatic and impactful through video footage captured by our communities. Our greatest hope in this time is that this intense period of protests around our country give way to a long period of substantial institutional reforms. As former President Barack Obama spoke in this important article in Medium earlier today, “The point of protest is to raise public awareness, to put a spotlight on injustice, and to make the powers that be uncomfortable; in fact, throughout American history, it’s often only been in response to protests and civil disobedience that the political system has even paid attention to marginalized communities. But eventually, aspirations have to be translated into specific laws and institutional practices — and in a democracy, that only happens when we elect government officials who are responsive to our demands.” He later goes on to note, “…the elected officials who matter most in reforming police departments and the criminal justice system work at the state and local levels.” We echo this call to civic engagement in our local communities, as well as Obama’s call to keep ourselves bound to the standards we wish to uphold; “let’s not excuse violence, or rationalize it, or participate in it. If we want our criminal justice system, and American

Fashion Designer ASAI Is Selling Rihanna’s Insta-Famous Dress to Support Black Lives Matter

June 02, 2020 at 12:35AM Fashion brand ASAI is bringing back Rihanna‘s memorable vacation dress for a good cause. Amid protests in response to George Floyd’s death and police brutality, British-Chinese-Vietnamese designer A Sai Ta took action to stand with the Black community by bringing back the singer’s outfit to raise funds for Black Lives Matter, Solace Women’s Aid, and The Voice of Domestic Workers. Rihanna has close ties to ASAI, since they created a 24-piece capsule collection for Selfridges last year. Back in February, the brand was forced to cancel its Autumn/Winter fashion show due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but it appears to be back in business for one particular piece of clothing. “No one else has this dress apart from me and RiRi,” ASAI’s caption reads. “We will be producing this iconic dress exclusively for three charities!” In order to purchase Rihanna’s Hot Wok tie-dye minidress, interested customers should direct message ASAI’s Instagram account (@asaitakeaway) or or email info@asaita.co.uk.   June 01, 2020 at 10:54PM   The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust is openly siding with the Black Lives Matter moment as protests for racial justice take place across America. The trust, which is overseen by Queen Elizabeth, Prince Harry, and Duchess Meghan, took to social media to share a message of support to those who are protesting and demanding justice following the tragic killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black Americans at the hands of police officers. The trust is a growing network of young changemakers across the U.K.’s Commonwealth who are encouraged to share their ideas and insight on how change can be brought on by anyone, anywhere. Meghan was appointed vice president of the Commonwealth Trust last year. “Young people are vital voices in the fight against injustice and racism around the world.
