June 18, 2020 at 03:26PM Remember when primary debates dominated the headlines? If 2020 has taught us anything—and between the government’s response to the pandemic and the national protests, it’s taught us a lot—it’s that we can’t lose sight of who’s in office. And it’s not just about who sits in the White House. It’s about selecting the state legislators, district attorneys, and sheriffs who wield tremendous power over your community. Though social distancing and threats of voter suppression can make casting a ballot seem intimidating, it’s still the single most effective way of being heard and making a difference. Marisa Tomei Is the Best Part of The King of Staten Island

June 18, 2020 at 03:13PM arisa Tomei has a new movie out. The King of Staten Island is a Judd Apatow-directed comedy-drama inspired by SNL breakout Pete Davidson’s life, including the death of his firefighter father on 9/11. But it’s Tomei who deserves every accolade for her portrayal of Davidson’s saintly mother Margie. The King of Staten Island is a moving film that shows New Yorkers’ resilience after tragedy firsthand, which feels especially pertinent at a time when we could all use a little inspiration (and frankly, something good to watch in quarantine). Equal parts touching and darkly funny, the story is grounded in empathy for its protagonist Scott (Davidson), who struggles to accept his painful loss and waddles through a stunted adolescence, causing his mom a great deal of agita as she attempts to move on. Comedian Bill Burr proves his acting chops as Margie’s love interest, who’s also a firefighter, and Maude Apatow steals every scene as Scott’s younger sister, Claire (based on Davidson’s real-life sister Casey).  READ NEXT Bel Powley Takes on ‘The King of Staten Island’ Ditch the Sweatpants & Dress Like Mona Lisa Vito But in the midst of the film’s release on demand, protests are continuing across the country in response to the killing of George Floyd in police custody, and Tomei has other things on her mind during our Zoom call. Over the past three weeks, Tomei, a longtime activist, has been busy using her platform to guide her 1.2 million Instagram followers toward useful resources, including candid conversations about race from

Kristen Wiig and Fiancé Avi Rothman Secretly Welcomed Twins Earlier This Year

June 18, 2020 at 03:09PM Kristen Wiig has reportedly been quarantining as a family of four. Us Weekly reported on Wednesday that the former SNL star secretly welcomed twins via surrogacy with fiancé Avi Rothman earlier this year. Page Six also captured Wiig, Rothman, and their two new arrivals on a walk in Los Angeles yesterday. Neither parent has yet confirmed the news. Wiig kept her motherhood status mostly under wraps. However, she did allude to becoming a parent while hosting an at-home Mother’s Day episode of Saturday Night Live in May. “This is the Mother’s Day show, and at SNL, it’s a very special time to celebrate moms,” Wiig said during her virtual monologue, later adding, “I don’t know if I truly appreciated my mom the first 45 years of my life. But this year I’m feeling especially grateful for her advice, her love. I’m so thankful for all the things she’s taught me, like preparing me to be a mom myself.” This content is imported from YouTube. Jennifer McClellan Announces Bid to Become Virginia’s First Black Female Governor

June 18, 2020 at 01:51PM Historically, women have needed to be convinced to enter politics. But since the 2016 presidential election, thousands of women announced their plans to run for public office. And we want them to win. So we’re giving them examples of women who have run. The point: You can too. Back in March, the Washington Post reported that 2020 was Virginia’s Year of the Woman. With Democrats controlling the state’s legislature for the first time in decades, a record number of female lawmakers helped approve the federal Equal Rights Amendment, protect abortion, combat sex discrimination, and more. Then late last month, state delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy announced her bid for governor of Virginia. And today, state Senator Jennifer McClellan has officially joined the race. If either of them were to win the 2021 election, they’d be the first Black female governor of Virginia—and the United States. McClellan spent 11 years in the House of Delegates and then another four in the state Senate; she was the first House member to ever be pregnant while in office. Now, against the backdrop of the pandemic and the ongoing fight for racial justice, McClellan is prepared for more. Below, McClellan on how she decided to run. Iwas always interested in government from a history perspective. My dad was born in 1925 and my mom in 1932, and I listened to the stories of them growing up in the segregated South during the Depression, during the New Deal, living through the Civil Rights era. My dad’s love of history sparked

25 Oh-So-Comfy Buys You Will Not Regret Investing In

June 18, 2020 at 11:00AM There is something somewhat ironic about the fact that I’m writing this article, as historically, I’ve been one of those people who say they “don’t do trainers” and prefer to “err on the side of smart style.” However, after being confronted with a new WFH situation, this has all had to change. I am now well-acquainted with the world of loungewear and have—believe it or not—managed to come round to the idea of tracksuit bottoms (just make them knitted) and leggings (just add a fancy cardi). Yes, miracles can happen. It is also clear that many of us, especially now since we’re spending a lot of time at home,  need a little more comfort in our lives. Luckily for us fashion lovers, there are plenty of brands that are expertly combining stylish design with oh-so cosy fabrics and fits. The result? Pieces that we would happily wear both on the sofa and on our daily walk in the park. Let’s call it the fashion equivalent to the Great British Bake Off: It has universal appeal, it’s low-effort, it’s feel-good, and it puts a smile on your face.
