Celebrate Juneteenth with The Justice Bake Sale

June 18, 2020 at 10:29AM Friday, June 19th is “Juneteenth”, the date in 1865 when General Gordon Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas to demand that all slaves be set free. What a momentous day in our nation’s history. This year, we’re celebrating Juneteenth as a team for the first year ever by officially taking the day off. To be honest, it has us wondering how this holiday hasn’t become the national celebration it could be. We’re wondering why we didn’t all grow up celebrating this day as a powerful moment of profound victory in our country’s trajectory. Maybe 2020 is the year that changes. This weekend is also Father’s Day which means that this weekend rivals only July 4th as the perfect occasion to celebrate the best in summery, all-American foods. Traditional Juneteenth foods include all forms of BBQ, but especially brisket (this is, after all, a Texan holiday of a kind!), as well as red foods and drinks of all kinds, which, according to the UTA’s Daily Texan, “symbolizes blood lost during the struggle for emancipation or the hibiscus tea that was frequently drunk by slaves during celebrations, depending on who you talk to.” The Justice Bake Sale Celebrating Juneteenth across L.A. on  June 19th are top chefs participating in Gather For Good’s  ‘Pies For Justice: A Charity Bake Sale’. While, unfortunately, there won’t be many charming bake sale experiences to be had in person as our communities remain vigilant against the spread of COVID-19, there will

Firecracker Shrimp Tacos with Pineapple Salsa

June 18, 2020 at 10:00AM All you need is 20 minutes to whip up these firecracker shrimp tacos with a delicious pineapple salsa. A simple, filling and flavorful dinner the whole family will enjoy combining the tastes of East and West. What is Firecracker Shrimp? I’m not gonna lie, this recipe is based off one made by Panda Express….I know, I know. But here’s a confession: I ate A LOT of Panda Express in college. I lived right near a Panda Express and Pita Pit so those were my go-to takeout spots. Not exactly authentic but definitely budget friendly. And honestly, I lived for the Firecracker Shrimp. I typically ordered it with rice (clearly they don’t have tacos!) but either way tastes delicious. It’s “traditionally” (hard to say traditional when it’s Panda Express!) made with a sweet chili sauce and black bean sauce. It’s sweet and tangy and to their credit they do pack it with veggies. This is my take on firecracker shrimp but with a little Mexican-fusion in a corn taco shell. How to Make Firecracker Shrimp Tacos STEP 1: Marinate your shrimp in olive oil sweet chili sauce, honey, lime juice, hot sauce and salt and pepper. Let marinate for at least […] The post Firecracker Shrimp Tacos with Pineapple Salsa appeared first on The Healthy Maven. Continue Reading… Author Davida Lederle | Thehealthymaven Selected by CWC

Summer Is (Nearly) Here—These Are the Best Sun Creams for Every Occasion

June 18, 2020 at 06:30AM You want healthy-looking skin. It’s cool. I get it. Trust me—I really do understand where you’re coming from. I also know that once the warm weather hits, it’s tempting to want to spend more time outdoors (safely, of course) but that without the proper protection, the sun can work against your healthy-skin goals. Beauty editors and skin experts far and wide promote the message that staying out of the sun at all costs is the best way to protect your skin from premature ageing and potentially dangerous skin conditions. However, providing you’re taking the necessary measures by applying a high-factor sun cream and not spending prolonged periods of time in direct sunlight, is wanting to spend some time in the heat of the sun something to be ashamed of? The truth is making sure that you are applying the correct sun cream in the correct way is absolutely crucial in ensuring sun safety. “From March to October, UV levels are at their highest. I would recommend applying sunscreen to any exposed skin 15 minutes before you head outdoors,” advises consultant dermatologist Justine Kluk. “It is possible to burn, tan and sustain sun damage that increases your risks of skin cancer and premature ageing from just 15 minutes of casual sun exposure without the right protection.” And this is where the issue lies. In reality, very few people do apply sun cream correctly, and thus expose themselves to damage. “Many people make the mistake of thinking that their makeup contains SPF, so they don’t need

These Coloured Shampoos Are the Perfect Way to Freshen Up Your Hair Colour

June 18, 2020 at 06:30AM If you’re anything at all like me, you’ll be rather impatiently waiting for the salons to reopen so that you can book yourself in for a well overdue cut and colour. I’m currently entering into my sixth haircut-free month, and things aren’t looking great. The simple act of brushing my hair causes severe snapping, and my split ends are basically beyond help at this point. Plus, on a purely practical note, it’s super long and seriously in my way.  But besides the fact it’s not in great health, the thing that is causing me the most anguish when it comes to my hair is without a doubt the state of the colour. Luckily for me, my go-to is a sort of out-grown balayage style, so I’m not left with banded, striped roots. However, the blonde that previously made up around 70% of my hair now barely just tips the ends due to breakage. What’s worse is that my previously cool, icy tones have since turned brassy and yellow. Last week, as I prepared to step outside into the world and meet a friend for the first time in months, I finally decided that enough was enough and dusted off a bottle of coloured, toning shampoo to freshen up my bleached ends. I simply swapped out my usual shampoo for my go-to purple-toned formula, and believe me when I say the results were extraordinary. After just one wash, I looked like I had just stepped out of the salon. Even

I Try Hundreds of Products a Year, But I Can’t Be Without This £9 Cleanser

June 18, 2020 at 06:30AM One of the most amazing things about being a beauty editor is getting to try all of the amazing new products the industry has to offer. From foundations to face masks, come the end of the year, there’s rarely a new launch untouched. The downside to this, however, is that constantly chopping and changing your skincare routine isn’t particularly great for your complexion. In fact, my skin hates it. The minute I try to phase in a product that my skin doesn’t like, all hell breaks loose and I get seriously angry breakouts. And the sad part is, I experience this with products I really think I’m going to love. All too often the perpetrators of such a situation are super expensive new launches that should be destined for greatness. However, with all of this being said, there is one product (of which I am always fully stocked) that I reach for whenever my breakouts get out of control. The minute I spot my pores are getting congested and sense that a breakout is on the horizon, I drop absolutely everything and reach for my trusty old friend: Super Facialist Salicylic Acid Purifying Cleansing Wash (£9). Almost like magic, after just a couple of days, my skin will already be showing signs of clearing up. And after a couple of weeks of using the blemish-fighting cleanser every day, I can usually expect my skin to be more or less blemish-free. Put it this way: If

The Classic Dress Style That Has Won Over Our Editors

June 18, 2020 at 06:24AM Love dresses? Then you’ve come to the right place. It seems there’s a new contender for best summer frock, and it’s not of the floral variety. According to Instagram—and the majority of team Who What Wear right now—the print set to knock flowery dresses off the top spot is polka dot. Whether they’re in black and white or more adventurous colours (see Kitri’s pink-and-white version below), it’s fair to say that we can’t stop thinking about them.  The best thing about this trend? It’s a style that’s not going to date, and if you play your cards right (i.e., pick a dress that makes you feel good and fits you well), you’ll be wearing this hero piece for many years to come. Last year it was all about Zara’s spotted smock, a trending style that has well and truly set the polka dot tone for 2020. Brands have continued the long, languorous and loose theme, but this year they come with an accompanying puffed sleeve. At the top of my list is Kitri’s ’70s-inspired belted number, which is sure to suit every body type and will bring a smile to your face (it’s literally the perfect shade of pink). Also, Ganni’s fabulous statement collar mini needs a mention—give it a few weeks and it’s sure to be all over Instagram. Scroll down to see and shop our full edit of polka-dot dresses.  Who What Wear’s Hannah wearing a flamenco-style gown from De La Vali. Style Notes: A black polka-dot midi is now a firm favourite

I Think This Bikini Trend Looks Good on Everyone

June 18, 2020 at 06:00AM I always want bikini shopping to be as quick and easy as possible, and over the years, I have realised there is one trend that I just can’t fault when it comes to fit. Thanks to Hunza G, seersucker bikinis and one-pieces have been one of the most popular swimsuit trends for the past few years. The brand was originally launched in 1984 and created the iconic minidress Julia Roberts wore in Pretty Woman. Thirty years later, the brand switched gears to create one-size scrunch-fabric swimsuits in a rainbow of colours.  Hunza’s suits have become go-tos among the A-list. When Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore one of the suits in Italy last year, the site crashed due to the surge in demand. Unsurprisingly, this trend for scrunch-fabric swimwear has hit the high street. ASOS creates separates that you can mix and match, with great options for fuller busts. Another brand that has really caught my attention this year is Youswim, which produces the swimwear in London and aims to “turn the tide on standard, inflexible sizing by creating swimwear that represents women realistically, accepting our bodies as they are.” All of Youswim’s suits come in one size and will fit UK sizes 6 to 18.  Keep scrolling to see this bikini style and shop my favourite pieces.  On Nicole Ocran: Youswim bikini On Reem Kanj: ASOS bikini On Dronme: Youswim bikini On Bettina Looney: Hunza G swimsuit On ASOS Lotte: ASOS bikini On Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: Hunza G swimsuit Next up, see our guide to the key trends for spring and

17 High-Street Staples That Will Look Good Season After Season

June 18, 2020 at 06:00AM More than ever, fashion staples have become an important part of our summer capsule wardrobes. When parties are put on pause and holidays postponed to next year, suddenly it’s our basic white tees, comfy jeans and hard-working knits that come to the fore. Nasty Gal clearly knows what the people want because it’s just dropped its Daily Icons collection, which is essentially a roundup of versatile pieces that you’ll want to wear through summer and right into the winter months.  All our favourite style heroes are here: neutral blazers, denim jumpsuits, midi dresses, knit co-ords and basic tees—oh, and the odd feel-good statement piece for good measure. Essentially, they’re all items that can be dressed up and down, styled with sandals for summer and layered up for winter. What more could you want?  At the top of our wish list is the Business as Usual blazer, which will look so good with tailored shorts and a tank top now, then with jeans and boots come autumn. We also have our eye on the Slit’s Now or Never high-waisted jeans with their flattering bootcut fit and retro-style fade—just add a white shirt and chunky chain necklace. There’s so much goodness and so little time. 5 Hairstyles to Wear If You Haven’t Seen Your Hairdresser in Months

June 18, 2020 at 06:00AM Shout-out to everyone who sees their hairdresser more often than their best mates, as I know that it’s been tough going these past few months. While I don’t want to downplay how important it has been to stay at home, there’s no denying that our grooming options have been a little lacklustre. Home waxes, manis and pedis are actually pretty good with a bit of practice, but the facts are you can’t give yourself a proper haircut. And no, watching a YouTube video doesn’t count.  But that’s not to say fashion girls aren’t looking as chic as they used to—nothing is cooler than natural, understated hairstyles, and we’re even seeing a revival of the ultimate bad-hair-day best friend: the plait. There are definitely some standout 2020 fashion-girl hair trends that we spied during last season’s Copenhagen Fashion Week, which we’re now co-opting for our bad hair days. The best thing about them? They’re all super easy to copy and incorporate into your everyday looks. Keep scrolling to see more. The less effort the better when it comes to this style. Simply pull back at the base of your neck in a chic pony or a messy bun and you’re off.  From scrunchies to scarves, dressing up your low-key style is all the rage. Headbands and hair clips aren’t going anywhere, either.  Okay, so this one is a little harder if you’ve got a grown-out bob, but think of it as inspiration for your next hairdresser visit. We love au naturel waves with
