things of lately + recent eats

June 17, 2020 at 11:26AM Hi friends! I hope you’re enjoying the morning. Some exciting news news today: Beautycounter friends and family is here! Click here to get 15% off my favorite makeup and skincare + 30% off holiday sets. I’ll share some of my top picks in the bottom of this post. What are you up to today? We’re doing the usual hangout and pool rotation over here. A new development: I’ve woken up early to work out the past two days in a row. I’m not a morning person AT ALL but since the Pilot had to leave super early to fly, I went to bed early, too. I can’t decide if I’m a fan yet or not. I’ve gotten pretty used to my late-night popsicle and Queer Eye routine. Some adventures from lately: It was madre’s birthday, so we went swimming at her house and brought a cake with us. Nadine’s bakery here in Tucson is RIDICULOUS for all of my local friends. We got a triple layer white cake with strawberry jam filling and vanilla buttercream. It was a lovely night to celebrate someone we love so much!   Sitting with my fave guy, watching the girls giggle and splash in the water is one of my fave spots: When the Pilot got home from his recent trip, I wanted to surprise him with a fancier dinner than our usual rotations. I also figured that since we haven’t had people over in so long, I should probably practice

The #1 Most Damaging Thing You’re Probably Doing To Your Hair

June 17, 2020 at 10:58AM What’s the most damaging habit you have when it comes to caring for your hair? We would’ve guessed it’s those tightly wound buns we wrap our hair in before last-minute yoga classes — or those few times a month we use a hairdryer while our hair is still damp. However, one of our most trusted haircare pros here in L.A., Christine Thompson, Color Director for Spoke & Weal, recently told us that the worst thing we can do for our hair is to get it wet. Period. While we were tempted to take Christine’s word for it and run full board into a shower-free lifestyle (anyone else showering less while working from home?), the truth is a bit more complicated. Hair is weaker and more vulnerable when it’s wet. When hair swells it can’t take as much tension so it’s quicker to break. Christine describes the cuticle as “the protective armor of the hair. You want to keep it closed as much as possible. If the cuticle is open when you are brushing it or rough drying with a towel it can create breakage.” According to Christine, the science behind wet hair damage starts with understanding the pH scale: “It’s a myth that cold water closes the cuticle of the hair. It’s actually the pH of the hair that determines if the cuticle opens and closes. The pH of hair, when dry, ranges from around 4.5 – 5.5, just like our skin. Distilled water has a pH of

Zara’s Summer Sale Is Here—These Are the Pieces You’ll Wear for Years

June 17, 2020 at 08:10AM It’s here, people. The Zara summer sale has arrived, and boy, do they have some incredible pieces available. However, before you dive head-first into the virtual shop, we thought it would be prudent to give you a few sales tips. Firstly, have a look through your wardrobe and have a think about what you need and what works with your current pieces. Then, when browsing on the site, add pieces you love, by all means, but before you check out, it’s worth thinking about how much wear you’ll get out of them. A good rule is to know if you’ll wear it 30 times or more, which is a great way to ensure you’re shopping as mindfully and sustainably as you can.  And if you want more pointers, we have an insider who gave us some valuable tips on how to shop the Zara sale in the UK so expertly that you’ll be guaranteed to get there first (and find the pieces you’ve been eyeing up all season).  Our intel is that you should go for the things that’ll be the most popular first. So opt for the higher-priced goods that will sell out quickly (e.g., cashmere, handbags, shoes and coats). “Other pieces like shirts are likely to still be around for the second markdown,” recommends our insider. Also remember to research trends before buying for the upcoming season so you can see what will last. “Customers will always ask, ‘Will you be getting more stuff like this?’

This High-Street Brand Just Created My Dream Summer 2020 Wardrobe

June 17, 2020 at 08:00AM High-street label Kitri has a habit of knowing the clothes we want to wear, and its new collection is pretty much my dream summer wardrobe. When a preview email landed in my inbox, I instantly imagined myself in every outfit. The daisy-print minidresses, pink short-sleeved shirts and throw-on gingham midis are perfect for a summer of socially distant picnics and hot-weather walks. It’s no accident that these pieces appeal to my current lifestyle. The Kitri team reimagined the summer collection to be a capsule for staycation activities. “Rather than building a holiday capsule wardrobe, our focus is on feeling comfortable at home, while also evoking summer and making ourselves feel special during a trying time,” the brand said. Kitri’s business model for the collection is just as clever as the designs, as it has launched with a made-to-order system in order to reduce clothing waste and eliminate the risk of overproducing and being left with deadstock. Customers are able to preorder items, which gives the team insight into the demand and how many to produce, and they can then reduce potential waste from overordering. Kitri explains: “Ultimately, we want to take the lead from our customers, and produce styles that they want to buy, rather than anticipating demand ourselves which can often result in excess stock. Excess stock = potential waste, something that we are passionate about reducing as a responsible fashion retailer.” All preordered styles will be honoured and produced, and you still have the option to return
