May 20, 2019 at 07:00AM by CWC Throughout my college years, I carried around a 27.1 ounce bottle of Johnson & Johnson’s baby lotion in my backpack 24/7. (Hey! You never know when dry skin may strike.) I made so many friends by offering up a pump of the stuff when someone complained that their hands felt like crocodile skin. Roll your eyes if you will, but I’m here to tell you that baby skin care products work wonders for grown-ups, too. Walk right on past the “of age” beauty aisle and what you’ll find is a treasure trove of pastel-colored squeeze bottles. There’s baby powder, of course, which moonlights as dry shampoo; soft as silk wipes to smooth all over your body (not just your bum); and baby oil to grant your complexion a head-to-toe dewy glow. Really, if you aren’t already adding all these products to your cart, taking them home, and slipping into your crib—I mean, bed—for an evening of self-care, I strongly encourage you to do so. Pineapple is the gut health hero of your summer fruit haul
May 20, 2019 at 06:53AM by CWC As far as fruits go, buying pineapple can be pretty intimidating. They’re literally covered in little spikes. And do you even know how to cut one open? But IMO, pineapple is to fruit what Paris Gellar is to Gilmore Girls: prickly on the outside, but with a sweet center that makes it well-worth the effort. Because it’s a tropical fruit—grown in dreamy locales such as Costa Rica, Brazil, and the Philippines—pineapple brings vacation vibes to pretty much anything you make: smoothies, fruit salads, burgers. It doesn’t hurt that the summer treat is rich in health benefits, too. Rounded up here are six big ones, explained by registered dietitian Holly Layer, RD, writer of the aptly named blog, The Healthy Pineapple. What are the health benefits of pineapple? 1. They are great for gut health. According to Layer, pineapple can help reduce bloat as well as prevent other tummy troubles. “Pineapple is unique in that it is our only source of dietary bromelain, which is a digestive enzyme that helps break down protein foods,” she says, explaining how the fruit helps aid the digestive process. “It also contains fiber—about two grams per one cup of cut-up fruit, which also helps with digestion,” she says. 2. They’re hydrating. Another reason why pineapples are such an amazing fruit to snack on during the summer is because they have a high water content; between 85 and 89 percent of pineapple is water. You already know how important it
Make room, probiotics: Why you should be using prebiotics in your skin-care routine
May 20, 2019 at 05:39AM by CWC For the past few years, our attention has been (rightfully) focused on getting our gut health together—but if 2019 has taught us anything so far, it’s that bacteria is here to stay—on your face. The term probiotic has been tossed around in association with regulating your digestive system, but prebiotics are a super important part of the equation, too—and they want in on your skin care. “Just like the bacteria in our gut, we have bacteria on our skin (our largest organ),” Amy Shapiro, RD and founder of Real Nutrition says. “We want more good than bad bacteria and want to keep this environment healthy to prevent inflammation, excessive dryness or oiliness, flair ups, and premature aging. Prebiotics [fibrous foods] help to feed the probiotics.” Makes so much sense, right? Dr. Brandt—a skin-care brand that brings in-office cosmetic vibes to your everyday at-home products—is putting prebiotics at the forefront in its Biotics line, and recently added Clean Biotic to the bacteria-friendly lineup. “Every product of the Biotics line contains our exclusive Biotic Balancing Complex,” says Amandine Morel, product development director at Dr. Brandt. “This complex helps to restore microbiological balance of the skin in favor of ‘friendly’ microorganisms naturally present on the epidermis.” AKA glowy, dewy skin awaits you. Scroll down to learn why you should add prebiotics to your skin-care cabinet—and how they help give you a natural summer glow. Got pH? The key takeaway from infusing prebiotics into your skin care
Trainers say these 3 sets of exercises make moving through life way easier
May 20, 2019 at 04:00AM by CWC The “Friday Flop,” as I like to call it, is one of the best parts of the week. It’s when I get home from work, flop down on the couch, and give my muscles the much-deserved break they need after going nonstop since 5:30 a.m. on Monday morning. If you haven’t tried it, I would highly, highly recommend testing it out for yourself (I promise: You’ll love it). Because for all of us, getting through the week requires a lot from our bodies, from sitting at a desk all day to walking 10,000 daily steps to carrying home groceries and taking out the trash—and that’s not even considering the actual workouts we put them through. So it makes sense that by the time Friday night rolls around (hallelujah!), getting horizontal becomes wildly appealing. But instead of relying on that couch time to give your body time to recoup, why not integrate some “functional fitness workouts” into your routine to make that regular wear and tear on your muscles slightly more manageable? “Functional fitness is a method of physical training that helps people move more efficiently, prevent injury, improve their balance and flexibility, and build strength to improve the way they perform every day activities,” says Mackenzie Banta, a certified personal trainer for Trainiac “Functional training is important because it improves our overall efficiency with almost everything we do.” Think: Carrying your laundry up five flights of stairs in a New York City, pushing
Big Cher Energy is the light that should guide every woman’s career
May 20, 2019 at 03:00AM by CWC I still haven’t recovered from hearing a story Cher told the audience on a New Jersey stop of her Here We Go Again tour (while wearing a Carrot Top wig and a sexy gladiator costume because of course): On her 40th birthday, Witches of Eastwick director George Miller called her to say he and Jack Nicholson didn’t want her in the movie because she was “too old” and “not sexy.” Though devastated, Cher’s response was true to form: “Okay, motherf*cker,” she said. “You didn’t find me under a rock, okay?” Cliii-ick! What I recognized most in her voice, though, is how humble she sounds. Proud and confident, yes, but with the lack of pretension that you can only have when you’ve persevered through countless obstacles. So today, on Cher’s 73rd birthday, it’s high time she be honored for being a pioneer of female strength. That story she told is one about demanding your worth and asserting your worth—like by clawing yourself out of debt via a Late Show with David Letterman appearance because you are worth the $28,000 the show agreed to pay you to do it. Cher, man. I grew up in a time when Cher was an untouchable, bedazzled, belly-button flaunting, Bob Mackie-wearing icon. She felt omnipotent and ever-present—a unicorn thriving in an industry where the marriage of ageism and sexism can kick you out at any minute. But there’s actually an everywoman quality Cher emanates that we can all soak
A run coach’s guide to running smarter (not harder) as the weather warms up
May 19, 2019 at 06:30PM by CWC For some, the onset of summer means barbecues, pool parties, and—for the lucky few—getting to skip out of work early on Fridays. For runners, though, the season is equal parts blessed and cursed. On the plus side, extended daylight hours mean no more runs in total darkness, and toastier temps mean fewer layers—and less laundry. Plus, nothing says “I’m a runner” quite like a sports bra tan line. The steady incline on the thermometer also means, well, it’s hot out. But if you have big summer or fall running goals, the time to put in work is now—which means the key to upping your speed and mileage in spite of the heat is training smarter, not harder. Elizabeth Corkum, coach at Precision Run in New York City, is well-versed in super sweaty runs and adjusting both her pace and expectations accordingly. If you have big summer or fall running goals, the time to put in work is now. “The transition from spring to summer is really tough,” says Corkum, a 21-time marathoner who runs four to six days a week. “I’m often gearing up for marathon training in the summer, so as the temperatures are rising, so is my mileage.” And while there are the obvious adjustments to be made—opting for shady running routes, running during the coolest time of day, taking frequent water stops, and accepting that sometimes it’s just going to be tough—Corkum says there’s more to hot-weather running than just
This brand won’t rest until everyone has found a nude lipstick
May 19, 2019 at 02:00PM by CWC Take a look around the lingerie section in any department store, and you’ll notice that most of the bras and undies that get labeled as “nude” are all pretty much the same shade of pale beige. The same goes for nude-colored shoes, nude-colored nail polishes, and until recently, nude-colored lipstick. But if you take one look around the actual world, you’ll quickly notice that the majority of the population isn’t a single shade of beige. Which means that traditionally, a whole lot of people have been alienated from buying nude products that work for their skin tones. Taking it at its name, “nude” lipstick should be the color of the lip when there’s nothing else on it…rather than a single, (not)catch-all hue. And that’s why it’s exciting that CTZN Cosmetics, a brand-new UK-based cosmetics line has a whopping 25 different shades of nude lipsticks…which is pretty substantial. “The problem is how ‘nude’ is currently defined in the beauty industry—it’s implied that nude is the color beige, when in fact nude is subjective to your unique skin tone,” says Naseesha Khan, co-founder of CTZN Cosmetics. “CTZN Cosmetics is redefining ‘nude’ by offering 25 shades of lipsticks and lip glosses to represent people of all skin tones and backgrounds.” Photo: CTZN Cosmetics So within the brand, you’ll find “nudes” that encompass everything from warm peach to taupey brown, soft burgundy, pure plum, and plenty of others. Each stick is double-sided with a lipstick and lip gloss that
Why Gemini season is the perfect time to do a digital detox
May 19, 2019 at 10:00AM by CWC Ready to put your phone down and make some IRL connections? The cosmos has your back for Gemini season, since the sign of the twins is the most social in the zodiac. So now is the time to live that sweet, sweet analog life, says astrologer Jennifer Racioppi—who also has a week’s worth of advice for what the stars have in store over the next seven days. With Gemini season quickly approaching, now’s the time to get both your social calendar and your social media habits in order. The sun and Mercury conjoin on Tuesday, May 21, as they both simultaneously move into one of the most social signs of the zodiac that same day: the twins. As a mutable air sign, Gemini unleashes the desire to connect. Mercury travels in the sign of the twins until June 4, and since Mercury rules Gemini, we can expect things between now and then to feel fast, communicative, and full of vibrant cross-pollination. While it’s a wonderful time of year for networking and dating, there’s a danger of overcommitting and failing to stay focused on that which most matters to you. To mitigate the impact of distraction this Gemini season, take some time early this week to organize your calendar. What are your non-negotiables this summer? What do you most want to do, experience, and accomplish? What personal values do you want to bring to life? What experiences are you most craving? Schedule that first. Then,
I found something to fix that stupid hair bump I always miss with the straightener
May 19, 2019 at 08:00AM by CWC Today I was painfully distracted by that one blood-boilingly obnoxious bump in my hair. You know what I’m talking about, right? That dumb hair wrinkle that, despite years of straightening my hair, I cannot reach by myself and that I often have to beg my roommate to help with? That stupid thing? I was selfishly seeking a solution during our pitch meeting (because I am very professional) and the team was unanimous about the fix: Revlon Pro Collection Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. Yikes, that’s a mouthful. I think it was more delivered like, “That Revlon round brush thing…it’s amazing!” Anyways, I was elected to test it out. If you have a mirror, the Revlon Hair Dryer, a waterbottle and a dream, fixing your hair bumps should be pretty effortless. Because it’s a dryer, I had to pre-dampen the section first. Then, I combed up straight and under the bump so I could actually see what the hell I was doing in the mirror. Photo: Revlon The result? The back of my head is practically spherical. In less than five minutes the Revlon Hair Dryer fixed a problem that has plagued me since I started playing with hot tools. The thing about my regular one-inch flat iron is that it doesn’t have the same grip to pull a wide section of head above my hair. Like, last night I was seething watching the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina because the back of Kiernan Shipka‘s
A career expert explains the (big) difference between a job you’d hate to have and a safety job
May 19, 2019 at 06:00AM by CWC When I was applying for college, my high-school adviser and other mentors encouraged me to consider “safety” schools—institutions I wouldn’t mind attending that would almost certainly grant me admission—in addition to the “reach” schools at the top of my list. Little did I know then that this concept would be oh-so apt for landing my first post-grad job. I learned this mind-blowing tidbit during a recent IGTV conversation I had with Lauren Berger, CEO and founder of InternQueen and CareerQueen, and author of Get it Together: Ditch the Chaos, Do the Work, and Design Your Success, about first jobs, new jobs, and how to find dream jobs, among other things. One of the first points we touched on was differentiating between dream jobs and safety jobs. Ultimately, the roles that zero percent of you wants to see out each day belong in neither of those buckets. “Sometimes people think a safety job is a job they would not like and where they think, ‘Ugh, I would hate my life if I worked there,’” Berger says. “Don’t work at those places.” Sure, it’s enticing for newly minted graduates and job-seekers of any age and education level to apply for roles that seem, well, terrible, when the alternative is an empty résumé and bupkis on payday. But if you hate your role and/or company, your mental health may be on the chopping block, given that studies have connected poor workplace satisfaction to depression and anxiety, among
