December 21, 2018 at 05:57AM Even if you’re the most authentic, brutally honest, totally transparent person in the world, you still outwardly present to others in some ways that may not mirror exactly how you feel inwardly. While your inner qualities may inform your external being—by way of things like your style, personality, temperament, and actions—you may see yourself quite differently than how others perceive you. But it’s good to be cognizant of your perceived self—especially for the more emotionally reserved among us or those who speed through life at a mile a minute, since other people may misread certain feelings and intentions. And your Myers-Briggs personality type holds clues to your external persona. (Don’t know what your type is? Read this first!) 2018 saw a *boom* in digital fitness—here’s the best-of-the-best in one place
December 21, 2018 at 05:12AM The United States President’s State of the Union address is a ritual set forth by the constitution (Article II, Section 3, Clause 1, if you want to read up). But today, in a new tradition, I’m here to deliver a much different—and admittedly more endorphin-boosting—report. Let’s call it: The State of the Digital Fitness Union. The bottom line? Last year at this time, we called that fitness studios would be opening right inside your own home through streaming apps and on-demand workouts, and the past year has seen a flood of proof as to why. Even though a report from insights platform Alpha found that only seven percent of Americans in general subscribe to a do-anywhere fitness service, zooming in on the sweat community itself paints a more representative picture. For example, the same survey found that 54 percent of those who work out at least once a month are interested in adding a subscription (like Peloton Digital) to their monthly expenses, reports Fast Company. What’s more: In 2014, Nielsen Global Consumer Exercise Trends Survey found that 52 percent of those with gym memberships were using a DVD (s/o to Jane Fonda!), gaming, or another online workout program to guide their time at the gym as well as exercise at home. For high-frequency gym rats, that number jumped up to a whopping 70 percent. That’s seven out of ten of the folks #killingit on the treadmill in their basement, people! So if you’re already enlisting the help of digital trainers when it’s
Get ready for your CBD options to blow up—because the 2018 Farm Bill (finally) passed
December 21, 2018 at 05:00AM It’s the holiday miracle that the entire CBD industry has been waiting for: On Monday, Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill after months of back-and-forth, and on Thursday, President Trump signed the 807-page document into law. And, as predicted in Well+Good’s 2019 Wellness Trends, this potentially could affect everything from your morning coffee to your skin care regimen—because this bill sets the stage for CBD to go big-time, with a huge wave of new products. Every five-ish years, this massive piece of legislation gets an update, essentially setting the tone for agricultural policy in the half-decade that follows. This year, in between details about farmer’s market funding and food stamps, there are also some major new mandates around hemp cultivation. This new legislation paves the way for the wellness-world star ingredient (which is said to have major anti-inflammatory powers) to break through to the mainstream. This new legislation paves the way for the wellness-world star ingredient (which is said to have major anti-inflammatory powers) to break through to the mainstream, but there are still some nuances to understand. Will hemp—and hemp-derived CBD oils, tinctures, cookies, serums, and so on—suddenly become legal in all 50 states once Trump signs the bill? That’s not exactly the case. Here, we break down what the 2018 Farm Bill means for the CBD industry, and why it may still be some time before you’re able to score a CBD seltzer as easily as you can a Coke. What does the 2018 Farm
Peace out puffiness! Here are the causes and derm-approved ways to nix it
December 21, 2018 at 04:25AM We’ve all been there…A fun night out on the town can turn into a not-so-chic morning after. But, surprise, surprise this post isn’t about ditching a hangover—it’s about another holiday season party foul: facial puffiness and swelling. It can sneak up on you when you least expect and throw a wrench in your a.m. beauty routine. To start, what exactly should you look for to know if your face is puffy? Typically, the symptoms include heavy eyelids, prominent puffiness under eyes, and a heavy jawline. However, Francesca Fusco, MD, a dermatologist at Wexler Dermatology in New York City highlights one benefit “A subtle sign that people might ignore is actually quite nice: the diminishment of fine lines. Mild swelling makes lines disappear.” Other subtle signs of facial puffiness that people might ignore are nasal congestion and watery eyes. “Some of the symptoms of facial puffiness include swelling of the face, firmness to the touch and mild redness,” explains Roberta Del Campo, MD, a Miami dermatologist. Beyond merely aesthetic changes, occasional swelling can have more dramatic end results. If you notice more serious symptoms ranging from persistent headaches, vision changes, stomach pains or shortness of breath, you should 100 percent consult your doctor to make sure that nothing worse is going on. To set the record straight on the causes of facial puffiness—and how to get rid of it—we reached out to a handful of derms to help us decipher the mystery that is facial puffiness. Keep
Don’t @ me, but I’m in a full-on love affair with my fanny pack
December 21, 2018 at 04:24AM I lost my fanny pack virginity when I was traveling through Thailand last year, shopping for an outfit for the legendary “Full Moon Party.” I found a nylon silver belt bag that I figured would look cute with the neon bikini I had on deck for the event (yes, I was that girl), and dropped $5 on it in an H&M in Bangkok. I figured I would wear it once—it was a fanny pack, after all—and donate it post-party. Boy oh boy, was I wrong. What was supposed to be a one-night stand turned into a full-on love affair that’s totally changed the way I travel—for the better. After that first evening together, I never went anywhere without my trusty hands-free accessory again. I wore it to hike mountains in Bulgaria, glaciers in Iceland, and on a five-day motorcycle trip through Chile. (I was the queen of being well-prepared for the tolls, TYVM.) Then, I bought another fanny pack while traveling in Peru that is heavily featured in all of my photos from Machu Picchu. Both options are now in permanent travel outfit rotation because 1. I secretly think they look cool AF, and 2. I never have to worry about losing my passport in the airport again. Avocado deviled eggs are the festive keto-approved appetizer your holiday party needs
December 21, 2018 at 03:30AM Deviled eggs are strangely polarizing: Some people can’t get enough of them, while others steer clear in search of something that doesn’t contain a cup and a half of mayonnaise. But a tiny tweak to the simple, occasion-versatile recipe can bridge that divide at any potluck. Deviled eggs, meet your new pal: avocado. An Instagram account dedicated to the healthy green fat, @avosfromperu recently posted a photo of the reimagined party classic. “Just because they are deviled eggs doesn’t mean they have to be completely unhealthy,” reads the caption. “Adding #avocado to your deviled eggs can make them even creamier and a little bit more nutritious.” And because it looks about as delectable as, well, anything else topped off with avocado, I searched the web for more ideas. Reset your skin with this Winter Solstice beauty ritual
December 21, 2018 at 03:00AM For most people, the Winter Solstice isn’t exactly the most exciting event. It’s the shortest day of the year, AKA you won’t get to experience much sunlight (miss you, vitamin D). It’s in the middle of winter, so you’re undoubtedly going to be freezing. And it means that if you haven’t done your holiday shopping yet, you better get on it fast. On the other hand, the yearly occurrence actually means positive things in terms of the celestial forecast. “It’s a time when the earth is going through a major recalibration,” says Guru Jagat, Kundalini yoga teacher, founder of the RA MA Institute for Applied Yogic Science and Technology, and Well+Good Council member who’s leading workshops at The Sacred Space Miami to maximize the occasion. “Harmonizing your aura with the celestial cycles amplifies your intuition and your energetic sensitivity,” says Jagat. “Opportunities for jobs, promotions, or higher caliber markets for your services are literally knocking on your door all the time—you just have to have the awareness that they’re there and the dexterity to take advantage of them.” Well guess what: She says there’s a beauty ritual you can do in order to get aligned so that you can reap the cosmic benefits. “One of my favorite ways to reset my aura during Winter Solstice is the hydrotherapy technology of Kundalini yoga,” says Jagat. “Upon waking up, gently dry brush your skin with strokes towards the heart, starting from the feet and working your way up

But when your body is sending you hints that your gut is out of unbalanced through your complexion or mood? That’s not so crystal clear. Stop rinsing your meat before you cook it—plus, 5 other food prep mistakes even healthy people make
December 20, 2018 at 11:09AM Today in I-wish-I-learned-this-forever-ago news, The New York Times reports that rinsing raw turkey or chicken before popping it in the oven is, well, not such a great idea. Washing poultry with water doesn’t remove any bacteria—rather, because your hands are getting all over the bird, washing it could cause you to spread bacteria, whether it’s straight from you, from the sink, or some other surface in your kitchen. “People are still shocked when we tell them,” Marianne Gravely, a food safety educator at the United States Department of Agriculture tells the Times, adding that they’ve actually been telling people this since the ’90s. (Oops!) It makes you wonder, what the heck else have we been doing wrong the whole time? Consider this the ultimate meal prep cheat sheet. Below, five common mistakes even the most cautious, health-minded eaters are likely making. 1. Not washing avocados Unlike meat, avocados should get a quick scrub before consumption. Sure, they have a thick skin, but according to FDA foodborne illness expert Glenda Lewis, they can become contaminated from the soil, produce workers, or something else during the long journey from avocado grove to your avo-toast. Pro tip: Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm water, then gently wash your avocado under running water with a clean vegetable brush. Dry it with a clean cloth or paper towel before slicing. 2. Washing your produce before refrigerating Who knew food rinsing was so complicated? While a lot of people are in the habit
I tested the most popular mascara at CVS and my lashes have never looked better
December 20, 2018 at 10:42AM I regularly joke that when I die, I want my ashes to be scattered in the aisles of a CVS. Growing up in the suburbs (hey there, Rhode Island!), it’s the place where I first truly discovered the world of beauty. I would spend hours scanning the shelves for the best skin care and makeup that $10 could buy, and even now one of my Sunday afternoon guilty pleasures is strolling through the aisles and seeing if there are any new products worth dealing with a miles-long receipt for. So, when I got an email this morning revealing the most popular beauty items at CVS from 2018, it felt like Christmas came a few days early. I recognized most of the items on the list. The top skin-care seller, Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser ($10), and top body-care seller, Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion ($2), have both been heavily featured in my routine for years. But the top makeup item, L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Washable Mascara ($10), was totally new to me. So obviously—especially given the recent resurgence of drugstore mascara—I had to try it out stat. And let me just say: It was love at first swipe. One coat of the stuff thickened, lengthened, and lifted my lashes all at once, making it abundantly clear why so many CVS shoppers are such fans of the stuff. I happened to test it on a day when I had worn no other makeup, but the mascara was powerful
