December 02, 2018 at 06:15AM Latkes are easily one of the best holiday foods, period. Potatoes + pancakes = iconic. But considering that they’re traditionally fried in lots and lots of oil…they’re not exactly the healthiest thing to eat for 8 nights in a row. To get your healthy latke fix this Hanukkah, Beth Warren, MS, RDN, CDN, founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Secrets of a Kosher Girl, suggests baking your latkes instead of deep-frying them. “To do so, simply drizzle a little bit of olive oil on top and bake them in the oven,” she says. If you choose to fry them, Warren recommends switching to a more heart-healthy oil like avocado oil. “It doesn’t negate the calories from the oil, but gives you more healthful benefits than other oils do.” And use less of it, because wouldn’t you be paying true (healthy) homage to the miracle the holiday celebrates if you could get one day’s worth of oil to last through 8 days of cooking? Another way to give them a healthy twist: Ditch the tater. “The classic versions of latkes are potatoes that are fried, so an easy way to make latkes healthier is to substitute the potato with a non-starchy vegetable like zucchini or cauliflower,” Warren says. Hungry yet? Below, Warren shares her tried-and-true healthy latke recipe—and eight more healthy foodies share theirs. You can thank us when your grandma insists you have seconds. Knowing the benefits of exercise leads to more exercise—so here are more reasons to exercise
December 02, 2018 at 05:30AM When I first started working out as a freshman in high school, I squandered away all my family’s colored ink to print out ultra-cheesy, Pinterest-approved exercise quotes to hang on either side of my Justin Bieber posters. (I can feel your judgment from here! But hey, I was only 15!) “What the mind can believe, the body can achieve,” one of the most extra of clichés assured me. Cringey? Absolutely. Wrong? Not quite. According to recent research (that wasn’t funded by Pinterest, promise), it turns out the eye-roll-inducing maxim might have legs after all: A study of Australian adults recently found that people who are more clued in about the benefits of exercising are more likely to actually make it to their workouts. I mean, go figure, but you can never hear it too many times, right? The research, which was just published in the journal PLOS, included 615 people (about 25 percent male and 75 percent female) between the ages of 18 and 77 who were asked various questions abut how exercise affects health. While almost 97 percent of participants agreed that sweat seshes do indeed benefit health, more than half of them didn’t know how much physical activity was necessary for remaining optimally healthy. And a whopping 80 percent couldn’t identify the how likely they were to develop diseases without doing any physical activity at all. “Most people know that physical activity is good for health. Few people know the specific benefits of physical activity for
This week’s new moon (coming just as Mercury retrograde ends) has seriously potent powers
December 02, 2018 at 04:08AM Get ready for a week with two big celestial events. Thursday, Mercury retrograde ends (holler), and Friday we’ve got a new moon with some extra mojo for illuminating truths, says astrologer Jennifer Racioppi. There’s major potential in these cosmic conditions—here’s her best advice on making the most of them with your fitness, food, and self-care habits, no matter what your sun sign is. Monday, December 3 The week begins with the moon waning, indicating now’s the time to let go of what’s no longer needed, to reach for something new. On the heels of a weekend where Mars, the planet of action, made a harsh and hard angle to the sun, Monday beckons you to get grounded. With the holidays in full throttle, self-care remains paramount. But self-care doesn’t have to be either indulgent or time-consuming. Prioritizing the basics like organizing your to-do list, desk, and/or home supports you to step into the week with strength. Speaking of force, how are you doing with your workouts and commitment to your body? Remember even a 20-minute walk has tremendous benefits, especially if it’s the only movement you can get in. Have time to do more? Go for it. Tuesday, December 4 Mercury, the planet of communication (which is still retrograde), makes a sweet trine to healing Chiron early in the morning (or late last night—depending on your time zone). While this cosmic configuration might bring healing dreams, most subtly, it encourages you to participate in your healing. Allow
MBSR is the mindfulness program that’s your one-way ticket to a stress-free life
December 02, 2018 at 04:00AM It’s say to safe that one thing that we all deal with is stress. The struggle is real, guys. Between working 40-plus hours a week, finding time to squeeze in exercise, making an effort to eat healthy, and trying to have some semblance of a social life, the daily grind can be overwhelming. And the resulting stress can totally wreak havoc on your life (hello, acne and sleepless nights)—especially if you don’t have tools like yoga, CBD oil, or meditation at your disposal to help you manage it. There’s another modality specifically designed to help you cope with stress, and you may not have heard of it yet: MBSR. What is MBSR, you might wonder? Short for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, it’s an eight-week live mindfulness program founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979. Think of it as meditation therapy that’s all about bringing your awareness to the present moment, says Elisha Goldstein, PhD, co-founder of The Center for Mindful Living in West Los Angeles and creator of A Course in Mindful Living. Originally, MBSR was created to help people with chronic illnesses learn how to relate to pain differently, and thus decrease their stress and suffering. It has since been adapted for people who deal with stress of any kind—be it anxiety, relationship struggles, or emotional pain. Think of MBSR as meditation therapy that’s all about bringing your awareness to the present moment Here, Dr. Goldstein dives deep to share what MBSR is all about, the benefits of
Canker sores are the absolute worst, but these home remedies could help
December 01, 2018 at 07:00AM Like an accidental dry-shampoo overdose or a bad first date, canker sores can strike anyone at anytime, without warning. So it’s important to have an arsenal of home remedies for canker sores at your disposal—that way, you know exactly how to deal with your mouth ulcer so it doesn’t slow down your enjoyment of vegan Rice Krispie treats. But before we get to that part, it helps to have a general understanding of what a canker sore actually is. In short, a canker sore is a shallow ulcer that forms in your mouth. It’s usually small, with a white or yellow center surrounded by a red halo. This nasty little pain-in-the-mouth can stake out real estate in a variety of locations, including the gums, tongue, soft palate, lips, or cheeks. So how do you know you’re dealing with a canker sore? Unlike cold sores, which are caused by a virus and pop up on visible parts on your face, canker sores almost always take up residence in the hidden nooks and crannies inside your mouth. You may experience a stinging, burning, or tingling sensation prior to when the canker sore makes its debut. The most troublesome symptom, and the one most likely to send you on the hunt for a remedy, is the pain you will likely experience at the site of canker sore once it’s erupted, especially when talking or eating. Are you ready for the good news? Canker sores are not contagious, which means you
This quickie lunge sequence from Ariana Grande’s trainer works every angle of your lower body
December 01, 2018 at 05:00AM When you’re in a rush, being able to hit all the muscles in your lower body in one swift series is a solid time-saver. And being as busy as she is creating #girlpower anthems and Mean Girls-inspired music videos, it’s no wonder Ariana Grande‘s trainer created a routine that provides maximum results in minimal time. (Something even she can’t say “thank u, next” to.) Harley Pasternak—who also works with Mandy Moore and Miley Cyrus—recently shared a quickie workout that has you, as he puts it, “lunging around the clock.” Except this ticker provides a serious burn. Because of all the different variations of the move, you’ll quite literally have worked every single muscle in your lower body every time you go through the series—and you’ll especially be feeling it in your “legs, hips, and glutes,” he says. View this post on Instagram Lunge around the clock! Try this sequence for your legs, hips, and glutes. According to Pasternak, you’ll be performing four basic lunges—including forward lunges, back lunges, side lunges, and curtsy lunges—on each leg in the order shown in the video above. It might not look super tricky, but both legs will certainly be feeling wobbly by the time you’re finished. Sculpt your arms in just 10 minutes with this resistance band workout. Or, try Tracy
I hereby declare that ugly nail colors should have a moment
December 01, 2018 at 04:00AM I’m not sure when the switch happened, but one day—fairly recently—my manicure colors of choice transitioned from your typical reds, pinks, and neutrals to what I can only describe as horribly ugly shades (I say that in the most endearing way possible). Think sewage and slime greens, burnt oranges, diarrhea browns, and neutrals that would match a turkey carcass. It’s not just my peculiar taste, either—I’m seeing the trend when I scroll through my Instagram feed, adorning the fingertips of influencers and celebrities alike (you know you’ve seen slime green rocked by Kendall Jenner and the Hadids). So maybe it’s been infiltrating my subconscious and influencing me on that level. Either way, it does seem to be a thing—and I hereby declare that everyone should try and be so daring as to decorate their nails with hideously cool hues. It’s certainly interesting, I’ll tell you that. The traditional, “safe” nail polish shades can get, well, boring. I’ve alternated between lavenders and barely there pinks for far too long. Reds? They stain my nails. Black feels outdated (to my Avril Lavigne worshipping days of middle school, to be exact). I find myself feeling incredibly liberated wearing bright and obnoxious shades. And I even get compliments. But celebrity manicurists beg to differ. “Muted browns, greens and burnt orange polish shades tend to look outdated and don’t agree with all skin tones,” says Jin Soon Choi of her eponymous nail salon. She would know—she’s manicured the hands of countless
9 cozy matching sweat sets you’ll want to wear all winter
December 01, 2018 at 03:00AM Matching sets have become a mainstay in both activewear and streetwear over the past few seasons. They’re a cozy, convenient way to look put together without putting a lot of thought into what you’re wearing. Plus, they work for so many occasions: travel, running errands, brunching, and lounging around the house in full JOMO mode. While spring’s sweat sets were all about cropped hoodies, skirts, and shorts, winter’s coolest pairings are, perhaps unsurprisingly, on the cozier end of the style spectrum. Full-length pants in fitted and flowier styles are coupled with loose-fitted tops, creating an off-duty look—especially when worn with a leather jacket and a pair of sneakers or ankle boots. To keep the look stylish instead of schlumpy, look for a set that’s minimal and monochromatic. If you’re aiming for more of a streetwear vibe, opt for a classic, heather-grey colorway. Or, to add a level of sophistication, consider swapping traditional cotton for a more luxe fabric like cashmere. Who says the hygge sensibility has to be confined to the house? Pass the trail mix because this new fashion trend is all about embracing great outdoors vibes
December 01, 2018 at 02:00AM First, there was normcore (dressing like a normal person, so creative right?), then there was dadcore (chunky sneakers, and all), and now, gorpcore is the form of fashion taking over the runways and streets. But what, exactly, is a gorp anyways? In truth, it’s an acronym for “good old raisins and peanuts” or you know, trail mix. The trend gets its fashion inspo from a recreational lifestyle and the items that go with activities such as forest bathing, hitting up Runyon Canyon, and camping (or glamping) depending on how you like to enjoy the great outdoors. Seriously, there’s never been a better time to dress like a badass woman about to hit the trails—even if your only form of exercise is walking to work or taking the stairs. So many designers are dying to dress you for said purposes, from fashion houses like Balenciaga, Acne Studios, and Alexander Wang, to boutique labels like Veja and Outdoor Voices, to mainstream retailers like Nike, Urban Outfitters, and Converse. All of them seem to be reading the same sartorially tea leaves—and they’re saying it’s time to take a hike. In a lot of ways, gorpcore is a breath of fresh air for a fashion industry that’s been slowly loosening up. “The rise of athleisure and normcore has put comfort at the forefront,” says Hayley Johnson, senior designer at Camp Collection, (a brand which lives in this post-normcore, active fashion world) “Gorpcore takes both of those movements to the next level by adding more cold-weather functionality.” It’s essentially the intersection
“Eggy oats” are the high-protein breakfast that you’ll crave all winter long
November 30, 2018 at 01:54PM Ah, winter: ‘Tis the season for thick turtlenecks, Hallmark holiday movie marathons, and most importantly, warm and hearty meals. Sorry, smoothies, but when it’s 20 degrees outside, I don’t want you for breakfast. I want oatmeal. However, despite its impressive nutritional profile (protein! fiber! whole grains!), oatmeal has a rep for being, well, a bit boring. And sure, you might have tried all sorts of ways to liven up your bowl, from the obvious (fruit and honey) to the more underrated (miso!). But there’s one game-changing ingredient you may have overlooked for your morning oats: eggs. At its most basic form, eggy oats (which is legitimately a hashtag on Instagram) involves taking a fried, poached, or hard-boiled egg and plopping it on top of a bowl of cooked oats.
