November 13, 2018 at 08:12AM There are days when a meal-prepped salad just won’t cut it—especially near the end of the week when you’re running low on protein and that avocado you bought on Sunday is starting to go bad. If your first thought on those days is “Sweetgreen!”, you’re going to have to dig out a few more coins from the bottom of your purse because prices just went up. Now, none of their New York City salads cost less than $10. (That’s up an average of 56 cents.) “We believe it will make a meaningful impact on our growers and our team.” It’s the first price increase in three years for the brand, and the reason behind it might make you feel a little better: The company is giving its 3,000-plus employees a raise and a better benefits package. “We believe it will make a meaningful impact on our growers and our team,” according to a statement on Sweetgreen’s website, adding that the company wants to become a place where employees can grow and have robust careers. In addition to a bump in pay, employees will now get paid parental leave, as well as some paid time off to volunteer, either working on a community project that is meaningful to them or on a farm—to connect even more to the meals they’re making every day. And hey, as Eater reports, you can still hack the menu and get a meal for under $10—you just have to forgo the protein. (Sigh.) If you’re stuck in a salad rut, check out how these wellness influencers spice up their orders. And if your healthy lunch is making you feel a little,

How to snag your Whole Foods salad without dropping $20 at the weigh-your-own bar

November 13, 2018 at 08:01AM Raise your hand if this scenario sounds familiar: You walk into Whole Foods to buy lunch, only to come face-to-face with the cornucopia of turmeric roasted chickpeas, goat cheese and pickled beet salad, saffron couscous, and other healthy delicacies available at the magical WF salad bar. You load up your box in a delirious daze. A few minutes later, you emerge from your fugue state and hear the cashier say: “That’ll be $18, please.” WTF. I’ve fallen for the enticing “serve yourself!” invitation so many times. But I’m happy to report that I’ve finally found a solution to my total lack of weighing willpower: The Whole Foods Chopped & Topped Salad station, which will whip you up a combo of greens and four toppings of your choice for $7 (plus $2 to add protein). And then, as the name suggests, they chop it to bite-sized perfection. The caveat here: The service can’t be found across the whole US yet (*sigh*), so you’ll need to see if it’s available at the Whole Foods near you (if you’re in the New York Tri-State Area, you’re likely in luck). But let’s rewind a moment, because I want to talk about the toppings. They’re not B.S. fillers like shredded carrots and croutons. Instead, expect all the things you already love about the salad bar: falafel, avocado, sweet potatoes, mixed mediterranean veggies… need I go on? It’s the good stuff, people, and it’s all laid over a plush bed of greens that

This flight attendant-approved hack is absolutely lifesaving for forgetful travelers

November 13, 2018 at 07:47AM There’s no official count on how many people end up forgetting their passports, laptops, and wallets in hotel safes every year, but chances are it’s pretty darn high. In the frenzy of packing up before your flight, it’s embarrassingly easy to forget about that tiny little safe in hotel closet…and the fact that you stashed your most valuable stuff in there for safe-keeping. Whoops. Luckily, there’s a simple travel hack that will prevent you from experiencing that full-on panic. If anyone knows how to avoid the biggest travel mishaps, it’s flight attendants. (It’s literally their job, after all.) And Ty Opoku Adjei, who works for British Airways, swears by a brilliantly simple technique that makes it nearly impossible to leave your passport behind. “When we go on holiday, it’s natural to want to keep your valuables in the hotel room safe, but some people make it all the way to the airport only to realize they’ve left their passport there,” she told Business Insider. “My top tip is to keep one of your shoes you plan to wear on your journey home in the safe. If you do this, you’ll never leave the hotel room without checking the safe ever again.” Pretty genius, huh? Unless you’re totally unfazed by walking around with only one shoe, there’s no way you’re going to head out without everything you need. If you’re one of those people who just doesn’t use the hotel safe at all…you should. While some

Meet the booking platform that wants to give Mindbody some serious competition

November 13, 2018 at 07:27AM Up to now, if you’ve booked a boutique fitness class online, more often than not, you’ve had to create a Mindbody account (or several) in order to snag a spot. Keeping track of various log-in details and not being able to connect accounts is a pain for users and a problem for studios that’s only increased as the boutique fitness bubble’s expanded. But a new platform, Mariana Tek, is trying to streamline the process in as few clicks as possible. It’s the brainchild of Stacey Seldin, John Huffsmith, and Bob Rademacher—who are responsible for building out the custom booking program for Flywheel Sports. “We want to make booking reservations as quick and easy as possible,” Seldin, Mariana Tek’s chief executive officer, tells me. “We shouldn’t have to take fitness classes to relieve the stress of booking them.” About 11 boutique brands in all, including Barry’s Bootcamp, MNDFL, SculptHouse, Modo Yoga NYC, and Brrrn, have already incorporated Mariana Tek into their backends. And Seldin and her team have been quietly talking to several more but aren’t revealing who until studios are ready to go public with that news. So what exactly does a studio switching over to Mariana Tek mean for you? In addition to the simple booking features, there are also some major benefits that make your in-studio experience even better. If you’re a traveler or don’t like to stick to one location, you’ll only need to create one account within a brand, which gives you access

Boost your immune system with these expert-approved smoothie ingredients

November 13, 2018 at 06:54AM There’s a lot to be excited about when the temps start to drop and the seasons change: big bowls of ramen, #sweaterweather (the bigger the better!), fuzzy socks and slippers…you get the picture. But the major downside of winter? Hello, cold and flu season. Sure, we have the flu shot. (And yes, you definitely should get one ASAP if you haven’t already.) But if you want a bit of added protection, why not look to your morning smoothie? Here’s what three food experts recommend adding to your go-to smoothie recipe to help your bod better fight off all of the gross winter germs lurking out there. Keep reading to find out experts’ go-to immune-boosting smoothie ideas. Photo: Photo: Pixabay/Imoflow Vitamin C-rich fruit + high-iron nuts Vitamin C is the secret weapon to a sharp immune system, which is why it’s the first thing nutritionist Keri Glassman, MS, RD, CDN turns to when she’s starting to get sniffly. “I reach for either mango or grapefruit, both of which are high in vitamin C,” she says. (For ref, eating just one whole mango or grapefruit will meet your daily vitamin C goals of 75 mcg—not too shabby!) She also adds a handful of either cashews or almonds to her smoothie for their zinc content, which helps your body better absorb vitamin C. As a finishing touch, she adds a heaping tablespoon of turmeric, the golden crown jewel of anti-inflammatory spices. Photo: Unsplash/Lauren Mancke Turmeric + lemon Registered dietitian Tracy

How to wait in line without turning into a horrible shell of a human

November 13, 2018 at 06:43AM If you want to see someone become a monster, make them wait in line to buy a Hatchimal for their niece. Hey, it’s a just the simple, real fact of life during line season! See, in November, a month that opens with an election and closes with TSA pandemonium and Black Friday, we spend a lot of time queuing up—and also a lot of time getting angry in queue. The intensity only continues in December to increase as many dumbly forgo online shopping for last-minute gifts in favor of perusing at brick-and-mortar stress incubators—I mean malls. And though the seasonal Starbucks cup next to me suggests this season is supposed to be jolly or whatever, customers tend to get, ahem, a tad hostile. But why does waiting in line make us feel so crazy and transform us into the worst versions of ourselves? Well, I could default on “waiting totally sucks,” but TBH, that doesn’t satisfy word count the way I need it to. So, I called on Richard Larson, PhD—the go-to authority on line theory who has ever-so-charmingly garnered the nickname Dr. Queue—to shed some light on why the grumpiness and lines are like avocado and toast. First, let’s identify all the people who’ll no-doubt piss you off in line: the cutters, the fighters, and the lecturers. What helps determine each personality type? Dr. Larson says there are multitudes of reasons people decide to make or break the rules of the line. “The responses
