How to fluently speak the words of affirmation love language—even if you’re usually tongue-tied

June 26, 2019 at 05:00AM by CWC It’s often said that actions speak louder than words, but for people whose love language is words of affirmation, it’s actually words themselves that speak volumes. Never heard of love languages? Introduced by Gary Chapman’s best-selling 2015 book, love languages are ways of communicating based on methods to speak and understand love. There are five different types: quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, physical touch, and the aforementioned words of affirmation. (Which is apparently the most common, according to Chapman.) Knowing your partner’s love language is important because it clues you in as to the best way to show them how much you care. You may think your partner wants to feel showered with thoughtful presents (receiving gifts) when really they would so much more appreciate you cleaning the kitchen for them (acts of service). “People whose love language is words of affirmation like their partner to use words to express their love,” says sex and relationship expert Jessica O’Reilly, PhD. But if you don’t consider yourself good with words, being in a relationship with someone whose love language is words of affirmation seem challenging. But Dr. O’Reilly says it’s really not. Here, she shares her tips on how to fluently speak this love language. The 5-minute Ayurvedic shower ritual to do for better ZZZs

June 26, 2019 at 04:00AM by CWC I’m willing to try pretty much anything to get some quality sleep (well, just short of plugging up my boyfriend’s snoring nostrils with some corks). I’ve ingested CBD oil to hit the hay harder, stuck a rose quartz underneath my pillow, and invested in black-out curtains, all in the name of slumber. And I’m willing to try more, because beauty sleep is really, really important to me. So when I heard that Abhyanga can influence your restful night in a positive way—along with beautifying your skin—my skin-care obsessed (and moisturized!!) ears perked up. Abhyanga is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that involves body oil and self massage. I had always imagined that it was a very extra ritual done in spas, but Shel Pink, beauty guru and founder of SpaRitual, says that’s not the case—you can DIY the whole thing in your own shower… and it’ll help you sleep better. “Abhyanga is a traditional massage technique from the Ayurvedic tradition that’s performed by either a trained massage therapist or you can do this massage daily as a self-massage,” Pink tells me. “This massage technique is excellent for overall health and wellbeing, helps to reduce anxiety and calm the nerves, improves and deepens sleep, helps increase circulation, improves mental alertness, nourishes the skin and tissues, and allows toxins to be released from the body. A healthy oil used in the massage lubricates the joints, tones skin, and makes it really soft and nourished.” Sounds like a

Copy this celebrity chef’s recipe for double-tap fresh skin

June 25, 2019 at 06:30PM by CWC When you see someone with glowy skin and super healthy hair, you naturally start to wonder which beauty products they keep in rotation and where you can buy them ASAP, right? For celebrity chef and holistic nutritionist Shauna Faulisi, her beauty routine starts on her plate. As a trusted nutritionist, her food-first mentality makes sense to stars like Jane The Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez, and the benefits she’s harnessed from her diet are seriously legit. “My skin-care routine really starts with the foods I’m putting into my body,” Faulisi says. “I’ve healed my breakouts and chronic yeast infections, and keep my rosacea under control with the foods I eat.” “I’ve healed my breakouts and chronic yeast infections, and keep my rosacea under control with the foods I eat.” Her go-to meals for glistening skin? Her signature hormone-balancing Glow Smoothie for breakfast, a salad with avocado, sauerkraut, and extra-virgin olive oil for lunch, and a full plate of above-ground veggies and small amounts of organic protein for dinner. ad_intervals[‘400922_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘400922_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); Since even the best diets are deficient in certain minerals, Faulisi turns to supplements for the nutrients that are hard to get through food alone. At the top of that list is silica, a mineral that supports skin elasticity that’s naturally occurring in bitter foods like horseradish, rye, and artichoke (not exactly foods you’re digging into over a Netflix binge sesh). “When we can

Want to feel stronger during workouts? A trainer shares her knockout tips

June 25, 2019 at 06:30PM by CWC How frustrating is it to finally commit to a long-term relationship with working out (so dedicated you’re on a first name basis with all the trainers at your gym), but still feel like you’re at a fitness stand-still? Answer: very. The fitness plateau struggle is real, so to gain some intel on how to break through it, we tapped Ariane Hundt, fitness expert and clinical nutritionist, who has worked to develop plateau-busting workout plans that specifically cater to her always-evolving fitness goals. Her first bit of fitness wisdom? Less is more. “Too much of a good thing will backfire and you’ll compensate, not just with more carbs, but metabolically because the metabolism and thyroid smarten up in a matter of two weeks of being pushed,” Hundt says. ad_intervals[‘401407_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘401407_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); In simpler terms, your metabolism will adjust to whatever you throw at it, so resorting to two-a-days in hopes of seeing continued results is probably not the way to go. Here’s what to try instead. Keep reading for 5 trainer-approved fitness tips that’ll take your workout routine to the next level. 1. The Caribbean island of Nevis celebrates its 44 varieties of mango with a fruity food festival

June 25, 2019 at 05:00PM by CWC Mangoes have completely stolen my heart. They’re the perfect combination of sweet and juicy, and taste as good plain as mixed into a smoothies or sorbets. Basically, they’re a shining star of the produce aisle. I’ve been totally satisfied with the one type of mango my grocery store carries, but little did I know there’s a whole world of variety out there. And one tiny Caribbean island is home to 44 different types to choose from. The island Nevis has officially been moved to the top of my bucket list. Aside from blue skies, long empty beaches, rain forests, and all the relaxing vibes, we learned during a meeting with Park Hyatt St. Kitts—which is accessible via a quick ferry ride—that each of the island’s mangoes have a distinct flavor and texture. They also have their own names, including Amory Polly, Julie, and Graham. You can pick and eat them right off the tree. Lululemon’s new personal care line aims to banish your B.O., but reeks of missed opportunity

June 25, 2019 at 03:57PM by CWC When I got the email announcing that activewear giant Lululemon would be launching its first ever personal-care line, which it’s calling Selfcare, I was intrigued. Heck, I was excited. “What will it be?” I asked my co-workers, as if speculating the contents of a giant, mysterious wrapped box. We dreamt of body wipes that would allow us to skip the shower line for good; a hair product that would transform my post-gym knot into an office-friendly ‘do; a face wash so fresh, it’d feel like it was made from drops of dew gathered from a meadow at dawn. Were our expectations high? Absolutely. But this was Lululemon we were talking about, the brand that ostensibly put athleisure on the map by creating workout clothes you wouldn’t just wear to the gym, but, well, everywhere. Case in point: In 2012, Business Insider profiled a woman who didn’t do yoga, but spent $15,000 on Lululemon yoga pants. The company’s impact on culture has been so major that last year, its legendary Boogie Pants (aka “the leggings that started it all” back in 1998), were included in an exhibit at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. In 2015, Lululemon launched its Whitespace lab, a research and development epicenter dedicated to innovating in the activewear space, and opened its flagship location, which includes space for wellness workshops and concierges to help you find local healthy hotspots. Time and time again, Lulu has proven to be a

Traumedies like ‘Dead to Me’ are having a moment—and the trend makes total sense

June 25, 2019 at 03:00PM by CWC I’d seen the previews for Dead to Me while mindlessly scrolling through Netflix, looking for something to watch. But it wasn’t until my sister recommended it that I turned it on. I was immediately hooked, and proceeded to binge the entire first season over a single weekend. Thanks for the rec, Maggie (my sister is a Gemini so I have to give her credit for this or I will never hear the end of it). Anyway, the show follows Judy and Jen, played by Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate, respectively, who meet each other at a grief support group and become fast friends who bond over their stories. Knowing that from a few minutes in, I wasn’t surprised when the plot skewed dark, navigating heavy topics like grief and death. Perhaps more surprising, then, was that I often found myself laughing hysterically at scenes. “This show, we call it a traumedy, because there’s so much traumatic stuff that happens, and then there’s humor to alleviate that tension and stress,” Cardellini said in an interview with the New York Times. That term is similar in vein to a genre that’s long-existed in literature called tragicomedy, which refers to novels and plays that blend—you guessed it—elements of tragedy and comedy. Infusing comedies into tragedy and vice versa has been an effective storytelling device for a long time. While tragicomedies aren’t identical to traumedies (tragedy isn’t a required component for trauma, for one), given the state

Garlic can actually rev up your sex life, along with 3 other benefits

June 25, 2019 at 02:00PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRmu4NiJWK8] Tracey Lockwood Beckerman, RD, shares the deets on garlic’s impressive health benefits. Watch here. Hear me out: Garlic can be a serious turn on. Not in the whisper-sweet-nothings-in-my-ear-with-garlic-breath kind of way, but in the biological way. Like oysters, chocolate, and hot peppers, the allium is a secret aphrodisiac—as revealed by top dietitian Tracy Lockwood Beckerman in the latest episode of  Well+Good’s nutrition-focused YouTube series You Versus Food. The potent veg (native to the onion family, ICYWW) can also help in the bedroom, thanks to allicin. “Allicin is an active compound of garlic that can actually increase blood flow, which may enhance sexual energy,” Beckerman says. Good to know. ad_intervals[‘403405_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘403405_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); However, there is a potential downside to garlic that might hinder your romantic efforts: It can also make you smelly thanks to another powerful compound called allele sulfide. “The same powerful compounds that make garlic so healthy for our body can also be the reason why our sweat smells extra funky after our workout,” Beckerman says. “When the allele sulfide compounds are being metabolized, which can take up to two days, they enter out blood stream and their odor can actually exit through our skin, and mix with our sweat to create a pretty noticeable odor.” So on behalf of all your future bedmates, please wear deodorant if you’re eating garlic chicken right before getting busy. Arousal aside, garlic has a

I whittled down my beauty routine to 10 products that get me out the door in 5 minutes flat

June 25, 2019 at 01:00PM by CWC “Getting ready” is one of my favorite activities. There are truly few things in life I love more than luxuriating on a Saturday afternoon and spending, like, three hours cycling through my shower, skin-care, hair, and makeup routines in front of my fancy (and legitimately life-changing) SimpleHuman magnifying mirror ($400). By the time I’m ready to go out, I have upwards of 95 products on my head, face, and body, but man do I feel good. Unfortunately, the inconvenient thing called “life” tends to get in the way of me carrying out my dream routine on a regular basis. As much as I would love to treat myself to this type of #extra-ness consistently (which, for what it’s worth, I totally recognize is completely ridiculous), I just don’t have time. So instead, I’ve had to pare things down to a 10-step, five-minute routine that will get me out the door in the morning while also keep me looking my best… and a lot of those steps happen to take place in either the SLT bathroom or the backseat of a taxi. ad_intervals[‘398039_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘398039_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); The trick, as I’ve learned after much trial and error? Find products that serve double duty, like tinted sunscreen, which acts as both SPF and foundation, and that are quick and easy to use. Keep scrolling for my picks.
