How to make foam rolling feel just like a full-body massage

July 01, 2019 at 01:10PM by CWC Whether you’re establishing your workout routine or have been incorporating sweat seshes into your daily life for years, it’s totally normal to experience muscle soreness. For some people, it’s a sign that their hard work is actually paying off; for others, it’s something they’d rather live without. Regardless, it’s important to know how to address those sore muscles—because, yes, you should do something about them—in order to make the most of your fitness endeavors. “Tightness and adhesions (AKA knots) in your body’s tissue is a natural response to exercise, injury, and lifestyle,” says MINDBODY wellness manager and certified personal Kate Ligler. “The good news is that a foam roller is a great tool to loosen and release painful tissue and uncomfortable muscle tension—restoring range of motion and helping to re-engage muscles to their full strength and power.” ad_intervals[‘402685_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘402685_div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-9261280-3’);}); } }, 100); Since you definitely want to add foam rolling to your recovery routine after reading that, ahead you’ll find four of our favorite foam rollers, as well as expert-backed tips for rolling out all the major muscles in your body. How to roll each area of your body Quads: “Lay face down with your foam roller resting against your hip allowing your foot to be lifted off the ground,” instructs Rumble Boxing trainer and CPT Dillon Spicer. “Use the support of your forearm and opposite leg to slowly roll up and down across the

The 3 ingredients that dermatologists would absolutely never put on their skin

July 01, 2019 at 07:00AM by CWC I like to strategically copy certain people in different ways for different things. I’ve adopted the vintage oversized blazer look, thanks to Mary Kate and Ashley. I try to copy (key word: try) the perfectly messy hairstyles of French women. And I pretty much try to copy everything that dermatologists do to their skin. What Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are to fashion, dermatologists are to beauty (like, basically). I hold onto their skin-care tips and tricks for dear life, and incorporate everything I learn from them immediately so I can have more of a professional-level glow. In my quest to cure myself from hoarding every single active ingredient that’s good for my skin in my personal beauty cabinet, I decided to tap the skin gurus’ brains and ask: What ingredients would you actually never use on your own skin? And with that, I come to you with insight to bring with you as you shop beauty shelves for your own regimen. Below, the three ingredients that derms wouldn’t put on their faces. ad_intervals[‘403638_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘403638_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); 1. Edible ingredients Natural beauty is great and all, but when you’re slathering on an ingredient that you can literally eat, then… well, it can actually be problematic. “If you can eat a product, then bacteria and fungus can eat it too,” says Purvisha Patel, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare. This is particularly if

A makeup artist’s genius mascara hack will help you avoid racoon eyes all summer long

July 01, 2019 at 04:00AM by CWC Just when you thought allergy season was over and you could finally (finally!) step outside in mascara without having to worry about raccoon rings under your eyes… summer weather set in. Between the humidity and the face sweat that are pretty much unavoidable during this time of year, your eye makeup doesn’t stand a chance of lasting for more than 10 minutes after you step outside. And don’t even get me started on days when you’re planning on heading to the pool or the beach. Thankfully, makeup artist Misha Shahzada has a genius hack to ensure that everything stays put, no matter how sweaty and gross your face gets in this heat. “In the humid summer months, I always avoid applying mascara to the lower lashes, and if applying liner too, the lower lid,” says Shahzada. “It’s best to keep the liner on the water line —only using waterproof liner, of course—which will help you avoid a smudgy mess.” And obviously, you’ll want to use a waterproof mascara, like Crunchi Lashes For Days ($28). ad_intervals[‘402704_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘402704_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); On extra-humid days, prep your lids with an eyeshadow primer—Shahzada is a fan of Marc Jacobs Undercover ($39)–before applying mascara and eyeshadow. The result? No drippy, droopy makeup in sight. A few other ways to make your entire face of makeup survive even the hottest days of summer: Start with a primer, like Beauty Blender Selfie

If you’re a chronic procrastinator, this spirit animal needs to be your new BFF

June 30, 2019 at 01:00PM by CWC A bad case of couch-itis (as in, you’re having trouble getting off of it, metaphorically or literally) can be a serious drag on your productivity—and your life. If you’re ready to break free of procrastination, this is the month to do it, says “RockStar Shaman” Alyson Charles. Here’s everything you need to know about the spirit animal Charles sees coming in for July, the antelope—and how it can help you take action and reach for your dreams.  Wow, June took us so many different places! Internally and externally, June showed us ways to explore and started to connect us more with our dear planet again. Here in the northern hemisphere, with the warmth of the sunshine and flowers fully blooming, it helps us to remember what a miracle Great Mother Earth truly is, always. As we head into July, there will be some very powerful and juicy feelings of stretching and expanding. When you are presented with situations that are taking you out of your comfort zone—that are requiring a version of you that’s a bit beyond what you usually do—embrace them and lean into them. ad_intervals[‘404968_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404968_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Antelope is more apt to align with you and your energies if you have a defined, clear goal—even more reason to take some meditation time right now and make some decisions you’ve put off making. The blessed spirit animal who is with us all

I found a $1 foot softening scrub so good I’d be willing to pay $1,000

June 30, 2019 at 06:02AM by CWC When you lace up your kicks and run your first-ever mile, no one tells you that the humble sport of running will destroy (and I mean: vanquish, maim, wreck) your feet. That’s a lesson I quickly learned when I began pounding the pavement years ago. So last night, when I was considering surrendering to my not-so-pretty feet and tossing my last pair of sandals in the garbage, I decided one last Google was in order. I typed in “how to get soft feet” (LOL) and found a DIY scrub that called for just four pantry ingredients. Would it work? I shoved aside my skepticism for all things “do it yourself” and gave it a try. The first thing that should be said about the scrub I found on YouTube is that it’s as easy to make as a TV dinner. All you need to do is combine two parts sugar (a mix of brown and white) with one part oil (a blend of coconut and olive oil). Frankly, I only felt like spending $1 on this whole experiment. So I combined coconut oil with white sugar and came up with a paste very similar to that of YouTuber Recipes by Carina. (You know, it’s kind of like when a recipe calls for 10 different spices and you opt to use only three…because, priorities.) ad_intervals[‘403370_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘403370_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); Once I had about one cup of

We found a pro-approved hack that will make any pair of shoes more comfortable in 3 minutes flat

June 29, 2019 at 12:00PM by CWC We’ve all been there—you have that one pair of shoes that you’re dying to wear…but they hurt. So badly, in fact, that no matter how cute they are you simply can’t commit to them for an entire night. They’re just a smidge too tight, and you don’t have time (or pain tolerance) to let them stretch out with wear. Luckily, you have a few options for an at-home fix—and they all take three minutes flat. When you’re in a rush, all you have to do is reach for your blowdryer and blast the shoe with heat to make it stretchable. Set it to medium-high heat, and hold it 12 to18 inches away from the shoe for 3 to 5 minutes. Once the leather is warm and more malleable, he says you can put on a sock and then walk around in the shoe to help break it in. “Just make sure that when you’re using heat on any leather, especially high-end leather goods, you have to be very careful with it that doesn’t get discolored or doesn’t stretch too much,” says Vincenzo Rao Jr. of Vince’s Village Cobbler, a shoe-repair shop in Soho. ad_intervals[‘404661_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404661_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); But if you have a bit more time, Rao recommends getting a shoe stretching liquid instead. “Heat is something that’s good, but the stretching solution is a lot more effective and a lot safer as well,” he says,

Tevas are the only sandal you’ll want to wear to hit your daily 10,000 steps this summer

June 28, 2019 at 03:00PM by CWC ICYMI: Tevas are having a moment. Your favorite summer camp sandal is back in a big way. “Wow, Tevas Got Cute,” declared a headline in The New York Times style section last month, and TBH, they’re right. The comfy shoe has seriously stepped up its style game of late, by way of partnerships with brands like Opening Ceremony, Anna Sui, and Outdoor Voices (the last of which sold out long before I could personally get my hands on them, which I am still salty about). Gucci even seemed to use the iconic style as inspiration for their latest shoe collection (which, at $740 a pop, are laughably more expensive than the original version). Just last night at an event, a group of editors and I stood around debating which of the Tevas on the market right now deserve to be deemed “the absolute cutest,” and there are so many options we simply couldn’t decide on a clear winner. In addition to being chic AF (a sentence I truly never thought I would write about Tevas, but am now wholeheartedly on-board with), Tevas also happen to be great for clocking those 10,000 steps. Unlike their foot-unfriendly cousin, the flip-flop, they offer enough support for you to walk around ‘in em all day long… without messing with your feet, back, and body. ad_intervals[‘404540_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404540_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); “When a patient comes in wearing a Teva, I give them

What the heck is an epilator? Everything you need to know about the French-girl hair removal method

June 28, 2019 at 12:34PM by CWC I learned many things during the year I studied abroad in France. For example, the expression for missing someone in French is “Tu me manques,” which translates literally as “You are missing from me.” I always thought the turn of phrase was wildly poetic. But I didn’t really understand it on a visceral level until the French TSA confiscated my epilator on my way back to America. Suddenly, I wanted to scream “Tu me manques!” at my lightning fast hair removal tool in the middle of Charles de Gaulle Airport—no matter the sharp looks from my fellow travelers. Just in case you’re new to epilators, the palm-sized devices (invented in the 1980s and popularized by the ’90s) look a whole lot like razors—except they’re electric and make a pretty terrible noise. After you’ve washed your body and exfoliated the desired area, you turn the gizmo on and slowly run it across your skin. Some people like to use baby powder and lotion as they do so, but it’s not “required” per se. ad_intervals[‘404767_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404767_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); The easy nature of the razor glow-ups are perhaps why they’re a pretty big deal in The City of Lights. Fashion blogger Eva Chen is a fan of them, too. Recently, she shared on one of her Instagram stories that she personally caught epilator fever in the UK—so it must just be an over the pond thing (for

T.J. Maxx is secretly the best place to score skin care—here’s what to buy

June 28, 2019 at 10:30AM by CWC I hunt for beauty products the same way as I hunt for clothes: I go e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e to find what I’m looking for. On the clothing front, I’ll hit up every spot from traditional clothing stores to Goodwill and even my mom’s closet (sorry mom!). And when it comes to skin-care products, I’m scouring beauty boutiques, Sephora and Ulta, the drugstore (duh), and sometimes department stores. You know, the usual suspects. But then one day on a quest to find some cute home decor for my apartment, I discovered the ultimate fashion and beauty jackpot under the same roof: at T.J. Maxx. No kidding. What I thought was an amazing store for finding bargains on clothes and houseware and purses is actually an under-the-radar skin-care mecca. Consider me shook. My shopping cart was soon overflowing with a variety of skin-care gems, including acne-busting face masks, clean beauty MVPs (including deodorant), body-care must-haves, and pore-clearing serums. Seriously—the ubiquitous store has a major clean beauty selection, so if you’re looking for more natural finds, it’s got you. And if you’re looking to splurge? T.J. Maxx even has luxe skin-care by SK-II and Clarins. It’s particularly exciting because the megastore is in, like, every town, so you can easily swing by to stock up on beauty essentials while you’re out buying home goods. ad_intervals[‘404576_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘404576_div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7520022-3’);}); } }, 100); Since their beauty offering is actually kinda overwhelming (because it’s just that
