March 20, 2019 at 02:18PM by CWC Every relationship comes with a unique set of challenges. (What, you thought romance was easy?) Add a mental health condition into the mix, and things can feel a lot more complicated. If you’re dating someone with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which can present in different ways and is the clinical term for what’s often called ADD) you may find that you feel ignored, neglected, and frustrated, Erin Nicole McGinnis, LMFT, says. (In addition to being a psychotherapist, McGinnis has ADD and has been in relationships with people with ADD—which is all to say, she is uniquely qualified to speak on this topic.) “People with [ADHD] can be very attentive one minute, and then not follow through the next. The partner can often feel like they aren’t cared about, filling in the blanks and making assumptions that aren’t true,” McGinnis says. ADHD, which, according to Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), affect an estimated 10 million adults, can manifest as hyperactivity or inattentiveness, McGinnis says. If the person with ADHD is hyperactive, it often shows as fidgeting, impulsiveness, and talkativeness. If they’re inattentive, it looks like daydreaming and spacing out, McGinnis says. “Both [presentations] have an inability to stay on task. They have a problem starting a task and finishing it. They also have a problem staying focused…[and] lose things frequently, which can make it very frustrating for their partners.” She explains that to have a functional relationship, you need to be able to complete tasks

I fell in love with pole classes, and TBH I’ve never felt stronger
March 19, 2019 at 12:55PM by CWC I start climbing upward, the pole wedged between my knee and my foot. Once I’m as high as I can go without kicking the ceiling, I swivel my hips to the front, flip upside down so that my butt is over my head, and grip the pole with my right knee. I push my arms outward, extend my legs, and drop, tumbling downwards in a dramatic fashion until I catch the pole with my opposite knee. For a moment, I swear I was flying. I’ve been pole dancing consistently for almost two years at this point, which in the grand scheme of things, isn’t an incredibly long time, but it’s weird to think about what I used to do before I frequented Incredipole multiple times a week. I started going during a period when I was very sad, very insecure, and wanted to explore an active hobby that made me feel good—after all, endorphins make you happy, as the great Elle Woods once said. The problem? I didn’t really know how to work out in a healthy way. Former years dabbling with appetite suppressants, counting calories, then attempting to burn off said calories while feverishly pedaling on an elliptical put me in a place where I didn’t know what a happy medium felt like. When I started taking pole, I hadn’t engaged in that sort of destructive behavior in years, but the anxiety associated with going to the gym was very real for me. But,
Ring the alarm! The latest Nike Frees have arrived
March 19, 2019 at 08:57AM by CWC Today in “take all my money,” Nike just dropped the 2019 Nike Free Running Collection. I don’t even run that often and I am consumed with want over these. Two new shoes are included in the collection; the Nike Free RN Flyknit 3.0 ($130), and the Nike Free RN 5.0 ($100). These sleek shoes were designed to mimic the way you would run in your bare feet—even more so than previous iterations of the Frees. Because when it comes to things like avocado, more is definitely more. But in the case of running shoes, it’s better to take a minimalist approach. Lightweight shoes without too much cushioning allow for more mobility as you run. Both shoes feature an offset that is lower to the ground than previous designs (4mm lower for the Flyknit 3.0, and 2mm lower for the Free 5.0). In regular person speak, this means that your foot is closer to the ground. It’s that whole “mimicking running barefoot” thing, you know, without actually having to run barefoot because that germ situation would be out of control. Nike also firmed up the midsole from previous iterations because this version is designed for lower mileage. Photo: Nike Plus, they both just look super cool. And really, that’s what’s important right? The shoes were designed to be more “anatomically shaped,” which sounds kind of sexual, but cool. Basically, that means in addition to design innovations that make the shoe feel like a second skin, the
It took literally ripping my tights to realize the size I wear isn’t important
March 19, 2019 at 03:00AM by CWC I had a real SpongeBob Squarepants situation this morning when, to the tune of, “Aaahhhh! Noooooo…” I sat down on the couch and completely ripped the seat of my tights. And when I say ripped, I mean they were shredded. (Clearly, the seams had been straining for quite some time.) Also shredded, however, was my resolve to continue contorting my body to fit into too-small clothes. I’m not a waif of a woman anymore—and that’s OK. But how did I get there? Well, rest assured that I lost a lot of good hosiery on the journey to making this self-acceptance discovery. A few weeks back, I had to cut a date night with my S.O. short because the waistband of my tights was constricting my internal organs in a way that made any line of thought beyond “must. take. off. tights” impossible. This was not the first time I’d had to turn in early because my vice-like undergarments were making me sick to my stomach. “I can’t wait until spring,” I said. “Then I can stop wearing these tights that just cut me at the gut.” To that, my boyfriend shot me a weary expression. “Sweetie, is there any chance that you might be wearing the wrong size tights?” he asked, oh so gently. I was, in a word, displeased. It’s now impossible for me to recall my response verbatim, but it might have involved 360-degree head spinning, projectile green pea soup vomit, and the
Behold, a rundown of people who are not the best fit to be your therapist
March 18, 2019 at 04:00PM by CWC Therapist Quest 2019 is well underway for me, and so far, I’ve been far more successful at finding people who definitely aren’t a fit. It feels like a sick-joke, real-world version of Are You My Mother? That’s because I want to find someone who comes highly recommended, yet being recommended often comes with a hearty helping of conflict of interest. This whole thing feels harder finding a promising date. Furthermore, being proactive by taking your query to Google as a first stop can lead to results so abundant and varied that the overwhelming effect may be paralyzing. This may lead you to stop the hunt completely, meaning your emotional baggage becomes that piece of luggage you inexplicably can’t bring yourself to unpack four months after the vacation ended. Obviously, this cannot happen. To save you some time and sweet, sweet mental energy, below is a list of four people who really shouldn’t treat you for one reason or another. Because knowing who’s not a great fit (and why) is super helpful for identifying that perfect healthy match once you encounter it. 1. Someone who is treating another family member Unless it’s in the context of family therapy, seeing a professional who’s already treating a close relative is an enormous conflict of interest. So though my parents mean well by offering to send me to my sibling’s psychologist, in practice, allowing that guy to be my guy would be an awful idea, because while he may well be
The pro-approved ways to get A+ second-day hair, according to your hair type
March 18, 2019 at 03:00PM by CWC Back in the day, if you didn’t feel like washing your hair, your only option was pouring baby powder on your scalp and hoping for the best. Case in point: I’m pretty sure I attended every single day of seventh grade looking like a greased-up Martha Washington. Then, dry shampoo hit the scene and completely altered second- (and third- and fourth-) day hair as we know it. But now, in 2019, there’s a whole new game-changing crop of between-wash stylers for those of us who would rather attend Ja Rule’s next music festival than wash our hair more than two times a week. Don’t get me wrong, I love good, old-fashioned dry shampoo as much as the next girl (maybe even more), but even I’ll admit that it has its limitations. Aside from the white residue it often leaves on top of your head (which, as we recently discovered, can be easily avoided if you hold the can eight to ten inches away from your scalp), not every situation simply calls for grease sopping. That’s why the best between-wash product for you depends primarily on your texture. “Refreshing straight hair, where you just want to get a little volume in there, dry shampoos and powders are great,” says Dove celebrity stylist Mark Townsend. “It’s the exact opposite for girls with curls.” Because curlier textures tend to not have as much moisture (it me), the perfect between-wash products often depend on the thickness and curl type. Here,
Okay, this is cool—wearable technology is apparently here to save our lives
March 18, 2019 at 01:36PM by CWC Sure, the Game of Thrones x Adidas Ultraboost collaboration is great—but apparently the real match we didn’t know we needed is the one between Stanford and Apple. I mean, the former may have given me metaphorical life, but the latter has the potential to give you literal life. Stanford University School of Medicine just released the findings of its Apple Heart Study. The study, conducted over eight months, included over 400,000 participants to determine whether the Apple Watch’s irregular heart rhythm function could safely detect atrial fibrillation (aka irregular heartbeat). According to the Stanford University School of Medicine, atrial fibrillation is a leading cause of stroke and hospitalization in the United States. Many people don’t even know they have it since they don’t notice the symptoms. To see if the Apple Watch has potential life-saving abilities, researchers recruited over 400,000 people to take part in the study, using Series 1, 2, or 3 Apple Watches in conjunction with an iPhone app. The watch intermittently checked for an irregular heart beat, and participants got an alert if one was detected. Participants were asked to have a telemedicine consultation with a doctor involved in the study, and sent electrocardiogram (ECG) patches. (ECG technology is available with the latest Apple Watch model, which launched after the Apple Heart Study began.) Prepare to turn into an IRL exploding-head emoji, because the study found that people who got the alert had a 71 percent chance of actually having
Cancel that foot massage—these feel-good stretches make feet happy
March 18, 2019 at 11:17AM by CWC When you’re trying to increase the number of steps displayed on your fitness tracker, your feet are definitely going to feel it after the daily grind takes its toll. The best way to repay your feet for carrying you from A to B is with some foot stretches for pain. Feet and toes often get neglected even if you’re stretching the rest of your body regularly. “If you have feet, you probably wear shoes,” says Brea Johnson, founder of Heart + Bones Yoga, in a YouTube video. “And if you wear shoes, your feet probably don’t get to move as much as they need to. And then we wonder, ‘Why do my feet hurt? Why is the bottom of my foot sore when I wake up in the morning? Why do my toes start to squish together? Because we don’t move them enough.” In addition to increasing circulation to the area, Johnson’s toe and foot stretches are easy enough to do anywhere you can sit comfortably, such as when you’re a passenger on a long car ride or you’re sitting on the couch watching your favorite TV show. Your feet will thank you. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpxBDjIn7nc] Now that your feet and toes are all stretched out, try these options before bed for better sleep. You can also improve your sex life with stretches as well, and these are the top trainer-recommended picks. Continue Reading… Author Tehrene Firman | Well and Good Selected by iversue
Finally—A Guide To Wearing (Sustainable) Street Style You Can Actually Pull Off
March 17, 2019 at 06:30PM by CWC Despite the amount of style inspo stashed on your Insta saved page or all the trips you make to your neighborhood vintage shop, putting together a Tracee Ellis Ross-level street style look is plain hard. The key? Creating unexpected pairings by throwing together an edgy dress and a classic pair of sneaks, or a cozy sweater with matching shoes for a monochrome effect. It’s totally acceptable (and cool) to pair unusual-yet-still-harmonious pieces together to create an outfit that’s all your own. And it’s even better when you can do it sustainably. To help you get started, we curated three equally photo-worthy get-ups that also go easy on the planet. The common denominator is the Sperry BIONIC® shoe—a low-key kick that comes in three different styles, an assortment of colors, and is crafted from recycled ocean plastic. Posing with your own (reusable) canteen never looked so good. Scroll down for three sustainable fashion looks to take your street style to the next level. Pro tip: Layering is always key. Since it’s spring and you can’t predict if it’ll be sunny and pleasant or a freezing hellscape, throwing on a black sweater underneath this glam dress is the ultimate hack—and clearly should be shown off in your OOTD post. Next, mix your patterns. We picked the Sperry BIONIC® Boat Shoe in a subtle navy stripe to play with your eco-friendly frock’s saucy snakeskin print. Strap on a fanny pack with a pair of cat-eye sunglasses, and
These 50 genius outfit ideas are the antidote to end-of-winter wardrobe boredom
March 17, 2019 at 06:00AM by CWC Remember back in September, when we all could not wait to cozy up in our fall boots and chunky sweaters? That memory seems so naive now that we’re almost six months deep into cold weather—and on the 89th rotation of our favorite sweatpants. Yes, it’s officially that time of the season when you realize your well of new, cute outfit ideas is bone dry. Tempting as it may be, you don’t have to rush out and buy a bunch of new things to beat the boredom. As Ashley, the YouTuber known as bestdressed, demonstrates in this brilliant video, a few strategic styling tricks are all you need to refresh your closet. (And safeguard your tax refund.) In fact, she managed to create 50 killer outfits from pieces she already had—sustainability FTW! Do the math and you’ll realize those are enough options to get you into mid-May without having to repeat a look. Here are a few of the key takeaways from the video, which are worth bearing in mind next time you’re about to send an “I have nothing to wear…” SOS to your group text chain. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCOo8AW4oI0] 1. To get more wear out of your going-out dresses, add a turtleneck “I’ve seen a ton of 15-year-olds on Instagram who are cooler than I’ll ever be layering a turtleneck under a graphic t-shirt,” says Ashley. “But honestly, I have no idea how the f*** to do that without looking like a Target employee during
