The *exact* steps to giving yourself a mini-workout facial massage
April 16, 2019 at 06:30PM by CWC What if we told you your skin-care routine was missing one crucial step—and that said step was basically a beauty-boosting mini workout for your face? Okay, so maybe a facial massage doesn’t have quite the same muscle-strengthening results of your favorite HIIT class, but it does tap into the same feel-good benefits—which is why beauty and style maven Grace Atwood is obsessed with the technique as a part of her nightly routine. “Taking that extra 10 minutes for yourself before bed to double cleanse, use serum, use moisturizer, and maybe do a little bit of facial massage, it makes you feel better,” she says. “There’s incredible amounts of research for all the amazing things pressure-point massage can do for your skin and your body.” The buzzed-about benefits? Helping your products penetrate better, increasing blood flow, and reducing fluid build-up (AKA puffiness). To clue you in on how to incorporate the practice into your own self-care arsenal, we teamed up with Reebok UNLOCKED (the just-launched wellness rewards program that hooks you up with beauty bonuses curated by Well+Good, among other perks) and asked Atwood to share the benefits and instructions for a pressure-point facial massage. If I won the million dollar jackpot, I’d buy 6,000 bottles of this cult-fave serum
April 15, 2019 at 07:29AM by CWC There are certain skin-care products that are considered the “holy grail” of the beauty world. Those few things that editors love (and dermatologists can’t stop recommending) like Elta MD Sunscreen, P50 Toner, and Bioderma Micellar Water all spring to mind. Then there’s Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Serum ($166). In my half decade working as a beauty editor, no product has been raved about as much as this stuff. Every time I ask pros to name their top three products, they mention it, and no lie, nearly every editor keeps it stocked in their routine 365. So, it would be an understatement to say that it has glowing reviews—if you scour the Internet hard enough, you’ll see that it comes with approximately 10,000 of them. So why is C E Ferulic so phenom? For starters, it’s got an exceptionally high concentration of vitamin C, which means it’s packed with all of the usual antioxidants you’d expect from the powerhouse ingredient. This allows it bring on all the benefits—like brightening, skin-tone evening, and all-around anti-aging. The addition of Vitamin E, though, means that it’s also ultra moisturizing and great for treating inflammation. But even knowing all of this, I resisted hopping on the SkinCeuticals Vitamin C serum train for, well, a half of a decade. I mean, I’m not going to sugar coat it: It’s expensive. I had a hard time justifying spending $166 on a vitamin C serum knowing that there were far more
These lash serums are so good, you won’t even need extensions
April 04, 2019 at 11:50AM by CWC In the world of lashes, the name of the game tends to be “more is more.” This is why you won’t find a mascara that doesn’t claim to lengthen and volumize your eyelashes, why eyelash extensions are becoming an increasingly popular beauty treatment, and why most beauty lovers say that the one thing they won’t leave their house without is—you guessed it—mascara. So I’m not surprised that every single person I speak to about beauty asks: How do you get longer eyelashes? Well, it’s not like growing out your hair—your little lashes are different. Lengthening them is really all about the ingredients you coat them with—hence the importance of using a lash serum. “Lash serums are treatments typically enriched with conditioning peptides and fatty acids that stimulate and promote growth and stronger eyelashes,” says Clementina Richardson, celebrity lash expert and founder of Envious Lashes. “Just like you condition your hair, you need to condition your lashes. Over-the-counter lash conditioners are a great option and typically contain ingredients that strengthen and moisturize them.” They’re also key for preventing your eyelash hairs from getting brittle and breaking. “So your natural lashes stay more intact, creating a thicker, fuller appearance,” she says. All you have to do is apply a serum to the lash line. “After removing your makeup and cleansing your face, brush the serum along the base of your eyelashes daily,” says Richardson. “With regular continued use, you’ll start to notice your eyelashes looking

Want to wash your hair less? Scalp serums are the hot-ticket item to know now
March 20, 2019 at 07:42AM by CWC 2019 is finally the year that scalps are starting to get the love they deserve. For as long as any of us can remember, “hair care” has centered around actual, well, hair. Lately, however, we’ve learned that good hair starts at the root, and that means taking proper care of your scalp. “Hair care is scalp care, and scalp care is health care. When your scalp is off, your body’s off,” says Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa hairstylist and trichologist Bridgette Hill. “We are now exploring what true hair care really entails. It has very little to do with the fibers of the hair, and for the most part, everything to do with the scalp.” After all, your scalp is actually skin, which means that it needs to be cared for in the same way you’d care for your face and body skin. Meaning: You wash it, scrub it, mask it, and now, slather it in a scalp serum. “Scalp serums promote healthy hair and hair growth,” says hairstylist Kim Navarro of Los Angeles’ 901 Salon. “When hair is washed too frequently, you’re not allowing the natural hair oils to replenish. If you’re on the the other end of the spectrum, not washing often enough and using dry shampoo can lead to dry scalp and flakes.” Just as different skin types require different serums to address their varying needs, the same principle also applies to your scalp. First things first: identify what kind of scalp you’ve got
This $6 product saved my chapped and peeling lips when nothing else could
March 15, 2019 at 09:04AM by CWC Earlier this week, my lips felt like they were on fire. Like I took a dive while playing beach volleyball, but instead of getting sand burn on my knees, it ended up on my face. And to add injury to injury, each time I’d smile, a rupture that makes the Marianas Trench look like a sidewalk crack would split my bottom lip in two. I had to adopt resting bitch face as my permanent look in order to avoid being confused with the Joker. And it’s not cute. There’s a chance that my current lip predicament was caused by my recent vacation to Mexico—12 cumulative hours in an airplane plus seven days of sun exposure isn’t a recipe for moisturized, kissable lips. But more likely the cause is four months of frigid temps in New York City, which I spent with my face wrapped in a flannel scarf I’ve washed approximately zero times since Thanksgiving. We may have already sprung forward for the season, but a few days ago, I found myself rummaging way into the back of my medicine cabinet for a remedy for my winter-ravaged mouth because neither my go-to cherry Chapstick nor the blue tub of medicated Blistex I’d been digging my finger into for years (what expiration date?) were cutting it. Within minutes, I felt relief. And within hours, my peeling lips were well on their way to smoothness. What is this witchcraft? And there it was. On the
I got a vagina facial, and let me tell you, I have some thoughts…
March 14, 2019 at 07:07AM by CWC Let me be frank, here: Although I’ve written about how to maintain a full bush, what to know about vagina beauty products, and why the pH level of your privates is important, I’m not someone who pays much attention to my vag. I don’t ignore it in the shower, and I shave it, but I don’t give it any particular TLC, despite knowing a lot about it. Until one day, when I was invited to get a “vagacial”—AKA a vagina facial or a spa treatment that’s catered exclusively to the nether regions. Mind you, I’ve never even gotten a bikini wax, but somehow, I found myself lying naked on a treatment table at New York City’s Daphne spa—with merely a small towel modestly covering my breasts and torso—waiting for an esthetician to tend to my vagina in a treatment mysteriously called the Lotus (which runs for $85). Natalia Aleksandrova, my esthetician, first instructed me to put the soles of my feet against each other and to open my knees wide. For, you know, easy access to the star of the show. She then put a bright light right on it to examine its state, in a way that kind of made me feel like I was at my gynecologist’s office. “You don’t have any ingrown hairs,” she said after glancing my vagina over. This is something I knew, but then I realized that this treatment is mostly targeted towards those dealing with ingrowns and
This $7 all-natural facial toner is the most popular skin-care product on Amazon right now
March 13, 2019 at 01:41PM by CWC Sifting through thousands of beauty products on Amazon is wildly overwhelming, which is why I’ve developed a quick and easy method for figuring out which products are worth adding to my cart: read trusted reviews. If thousands of other people who are shopping for skin-care on Amazon love a particular cleanser or facial toner or moisturizer, chances are I will too. The most recent product to catch my eye is Thayers Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner ($7), which happens to be the no. 1 best-selling skin-care product on Amazon right now. It’s made with rose-petal water and witch hazel to “make your skin bloom,” as the brand puts it. In beauty-speak, that means that the naturally astringent properties of both ingredients will help to tighten pores, control the production of oil, and lock in moisture while protecting your skin from free radicals. The aloe in the bottle is there to provide continued hydration. Photo: Well+Good Creative And for what it’s worth, it looks like this facial toner’s 4,388 (overwhelmingly positive) reviewers are onto something. According to derms, Thayers really is that great. “Witch hazel is botanical extract rich in compounds known as tannins, which have both antioxidant benefits and astringent properties,” says dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner. “It also has a naturally has an acidic pH, which is why it is used as a toner to maintain a healthy skin pH level. Its astringent properties help remove excess oil from the skin which is useful in people who are
