You can’t control every minute of your life, but learning your “Time Type” helps every relationship

March 21, 2019 at 11:43AM by CWC Out of all the Harry Potter movies, I’ve rewatched The Prisoner of Azkaban the most. Not because of the pure majesty of Hagrid’s hippogriff, Buckbeak. Not because Hermione punching Malfoy is arguably one of the most iconic scene in all eight films and all seven books. I’m just love the time-turner, a trinket Hermoine Granger uses to turn back time at Hogwarts to take more courses. And ultimately save the day. Having total control over every second of our lives is pretty much the collective dream. And learning your “Time Type,” or how you operate best within the constraints of the clock, is the kind of self-discovery magic even we muggles are privy to. Thrive Global reports that there are two major temporal personalities: “the watchdog” and “the lounger.” As we grow up, we’re unwittingly molding ourselves into one of these understandings of time, and soon, we begin judging others by how well (or poorly) they adhere to our schedules, explains Steven Griffith, author of The Time Cleanse. “Eventually, [developing a Time Type] resulted in us each measuring life by units of time, which then extended to others,” writes Griffith, “and we began valuing others based on their relationship with time in comparison with our relationship with it.” Familiarizing yourself with your own time-management style and those of your friends and family can ensure clearer, more empathetic communication. (Read: “You’re 20 minutes late for brunch!” will turn into something more amiable like, “I understand you’re lounger, but I’m a watch dog and

Want to wash your hair less? Scalp serums are the hot-ticket item to know now

March 20, 2019 at 07:42AM by CWC 2019 is finally the year that scalps are starting to get the love they deserve. For as long as any of us can remember, “hair care” has centered around actual, well, hair. Lately, however, we’ve learned that good hair starts at the root, and that means taking proper care of your scalp. “Hair care is scalp care, and scalp care is health care. When your scalp is off, your body’s off,” says Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa hairstylist and trichologist Bridgette Hill. “We are now exploring what true hair care really entails. It has very little to do with the fibers of the hair, and for the most part, everything to do with the scalp.” After all, your scalp is actually skin, which means that it needs to be cared for in the same way you’d care for your face and body skin. Meaning: You wash it, scrub it, mask it, and now, slather it in a scalp serum. “Scalp serums promote healthy hair and hair growth,” says hairstylist Kim Navarro of Los Angeles’ 901 Salon. “When hair is washed too frequently, you’re not allowing the natural hair oils to replenish. If you’re on the the other end of the spectrum, not washing often enough and using dry shampoo can lead to dry scalp and flakes.” Just as different skin types require different serums to address their varying needs, the same principle also applies to your scalp. First things first: identify what kind of scalp you’ve got

Shift workers share how they sleep, socialize, and generally function on a nontraditional schedule

March 19, 2019 at 03:00PM by CWC It’s 3 a.m. when firefighter Molly* jolts awake. Great, just great, she thinks. Molly works 10 24-hour shifts a month and, but this is a night where she’s home in her own bed. “I fall asleep easily, but have problems staying asleep,” she says. When she clocks her rest at the firehouse, she has to be up and ready in mere seconds at the sound of an (extremely loud) siren. Knowing she might have to be awake and alert enough to make literal life or death decisions makes for terrible sleep during shifts. And because her body’s conditioned to spring into action at any time, she has trouble getting quality sleep at home, too. Kimberly Brown, MD, a 34-year-old ER doctor living in Memphis can relate. Her schedule is all over the place; sometimes she works 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., and other times it’s 8 p.m. to 7 p.m. “My night shifts are never more than three days in a row, so I don’t get too used to it,’” she says. Still, because her hours change so often (and to such a high magnitude), she says it’s hard to get consistent, quality sleep. Chasing enough sleep is a pursuit that keeps so many of us awake at night—and in the case of night shift workers, during the day, too. According to Well+Good’s recent survey of nearly 1,500 people about their sleep habits and health, 92 percent of of us feel fatigued more

I fell in love with pole classes, and TBH I’ve never felt stronger

March 19, 2019 at 12:55PM by CWC I start climbing upward, the pole wedged between my knee and my foot. Once I’m as high as I can go without kicking the ceiling, I swivel my hips to the front, flip upside down so that my butt is over my head, and grip the pole with my right knee. I push my arms outward, extend my legs, and drop, tumbling downwards in a dramatic fashion until I catch the pole with my opposite knee. For a moment, I swear I was flying. I’ve been pole dancing consistently for almost two years at this point, which in the grand scheme of things, isn’t an incredibly long time, but it’s weird to think about what I used to do before I frequented Incredipole multiple times a week. I started going during a period when I was very sad, very insecure, and wanted to explore an active hobby that made me feel good—after all, endorphins make you happy, as the great Elle Woods once said. The problem? I didn’t really know how to work out in a healthy way. Former years dabbling with appetite suppressants, counting calories, then attempting to burn off said calories while feverishly pedaling on an elliptical put me in a place where I didn’t know what a happy medium felt like. When I started taking pole, I hadn’t engaged in that sort of destructive behavior in years, but the anxiety associated with going to the gym was very real for me. But,

No lie: Aussie HIIT franchise F45 is about to be everywhere

March 19, 2019 at 08:31AM by CWC Just two years ago, Well+Good predicted that the Aussie fitness franchise F45 Training would explode in a big way. After opening hundreds of new studios internationally in 2018, and a new (major) investment from Mark Wahlberg and his investment group, it’s fair to say it’s well on its way to becoming the next boutique workout model to enter the mainstream, alongside Orangetheory, CorePower Yoga, and Pure Barre. Since we last caught up with its founder Robert Deutsch, F45 has sold 1,300 studio franchises around the globe—570 of those will open in the United States, according to Forbes. And this is just a warm-up: Deutsch says plans are in the works to expand everywhere from Canada to Europe to Asia in the near future. I chatted with Mark Wahlberg yesterday about the investment, and he’s a genuine fan of the creativity of the workout—mainly because of how it’s helped his brother. “I think the workout studio chose me—I went in there not really knowing what to expect, and I was amazed at how no matter what your experience is in working out, you can do the workout at your own pace with a huge support system and encouragement, with people there to teach you how to do things the right way,” he tells me over the phone. “Every time I’m at a gym, everyone’s doing their own thing. But I took my brother to F45—he hadn’t worked out before, probably ever—and we were both able to do it

Finally—A Guide To Wearing (Sustainable) Street Style You Can Actually Pull Off

March 17, 2019 at 06:30PM by CWC Despite the amount of style inspo stashed on your Insta saved page or all the trips you make to your neighborhood vintage shop, putting together a Tracee Ellis Ross-level street style look is plain hard. The key? Creating unexpected pairings by throwing together an edgy dress and a classic pair of sneaks, or a cozy sweater with matching shoes for a monochrome effect. It’s totally acceptable (and cool) to pair unusual-yet-still-harmonious pieces together to create an outfit that’s all your own. And it’s even better when you can do it sustainably. To help you get started, we curated three equally photo-worthy get-ups that also go easy on the planet. The common denominator is the Sperry BIONIC® shoe—a low-key kick that comes in three different styles, an assortment of colors, and is crafted from recycled ocean plastic. Posing with your own (reusable) canteen never looked so good. Scroll down for three sustainable fashion looks to take your street style to the next level. Pro tip: Layering is always key. Since it’s spring and you can’t predict if it’ll be sunny and pleasant or a freezing hellscape, throwing on a black sweater underneath this glam dress is the ultimate hack—and clearly should be shown off in your OOTD post. Next, mix your patterns. We picked the Sperry BIONIC® Boat Shoe in a subtle navy stripe to play with your eco-friendly frock’s saucy snakeskin print. Strap on a fanny pack with a pair of cat-eye sunglasses, and

These 50 genius outfit ideas are the antidote to end-of-winter wardrobe boredom

March 17, 2019 at 06:00AM by CWC Remember back in September, when we all could not wait to cozy up in our fall boots and chunky sweaters? That memory seems so naive now that we’re almost six months deep into cold weather—and on the 89th rotation of our favorite sweatpants. Yes, it’s officially that time of the season when you realize your well of new, cute outfit ideas is bone dry. Tempting as it may be, you don’t have to rush out and buy a bunch of new things to beat the boredom. As Ashley, the YouTuber known as bestdressed, demonstrates in this brilliant video, a few strategic styling tricks are all you need to refresh your closet. (And safeguard your tax refund.) In fact, she managed to create 50 killer outfits from pieces she already had—sustainability FTW! Do the math and you’ll realize those are enough options to get you into mid-May without having to repeat a look. Here are a few of the key takeaways from the video, which are worth bearing in mind next time you’re about to send an “I have nothing to wear…” SOS to your group text chain. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCOo8AW4oI0] 1. To get more wear out of your going-out dresses, add a turtleneck “I’ve seen a ton of 15-year-olds on Instagram who are cooler than I’ll ever be layering a turtleneck under a graphic t-shirt,” says Ashley. “But honestly, I have no idea how the f*** to do that without looking like a Target employee during

The at-home ab workout that Jenna Dewan and Jessica Alba swear by

March 15, 2019 at 12:24PM by CWC If I could peek inside the fitness routines of any two celebrities, it would be Jenna Dewan and Jessica Alba. Not only are they both #girlcrush-worthy for approximately 3 billion reasons (I mean, have you seen Step Up? Have you used literally any product from The Honest Company?), but they are, simply, strong as hell. And, as I recently discovered, it’s for good reason: Both of these A-list actresses happen to share a trainer. FitOn resident celebrity trainer Jennifer “JJ Dancer” Johnson is the force behind their six-pack abs and killer dance moves of these two powerhouse women (if you have not watch the video of Jenna Dewan performing “Pony,” or seen Jessica Alba in my favorite movie of 2003, Honey, please stop what you’re doing right now to tune into both), and works with both of them strengthen and tone their screen-ready physiques. Here, Johnson shares three ab-busting moves that she uses with her star clients, and all you need to recreate them at home is two towels or a set of gliding disks. Walking planks (4 sets) What it works: The transverse layer of your abdominal muscles. “This will pull your abs in to give you a ‘snatched’ and tight look versus filling your abs out,” says Johnson. Step 1: Start in a high-plank pose, with the sliders under your feet Step 2: Holding the plank position and walk forward and backward eight times, making sure to stay parallel to the floor with a steady stance

Grab a bigger spoon, because we found a Nutella dupe with way less sugar

March 15, 2019 at 09:50AM by CWC Here’s an alternative theory that’ll rock your TRL-loving world: Back in 1997, when N’Sync first suggested that God must have spent a little more time on you, the group was not talking about you (or your middle-school crush, for that matter). Over twenty years later, I know now that they could only be talking about Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut & Almond Butter. This epiphany came to me yesterday—back when I thought my life was complete, I thought it was whole—when I tried said almond butter for the first time. Immediately I wondered, “Can this be true? Tell me, can this be real?” because the stuff tastes like a dead ringer for what I thought was my one true love: Nutella. Yet this new-to-me magic spread packs just over half of the sugar and way more protein than the stuff I’ve grown up loving. The Justin’s spread has been around for a few years, but certainly not as long as Nutella (which hit the shelves in 1964). So it stands to reason that Justin Timberlake was just prophesizing about the 21st-century miracle creation of a different brilliant Justin when he wondered, “How can it be that right here with me, there’s an angel? It’s a miracle.” Because, really, is there anything more worthy of a dedicated power ballad than a taste-worthy Nutella dupe that’s healthy to boot? Not in my book. (Sorry, Jessica Biel—it is what it is.) Even after adjusting for discrepancy in serving size,

Snag these editor-approved, under-$15 drugstore buys for every skin type

March 14, 2019 at 12:42PM by CWC As a group of beauty editors, we’ll be the first to admit that our bathrooms (and our bedrooms, and our desks, and our gym bags) are stock-piled with products on products. Case in point: My sink currently has 17 cleansers sitting underneath it waiting to be tested, and right now I can count no fewer than 20 bottles of skin care sitting on Rachel and Ali’s desks. The good news, though, is that we never have to battle it out over who gets to try out which product, because we all have different skin types. While mine is so dry that it practically cracks off if I don’t treat it the right way, Rachel’s is acne-prone, and Ali’s tends to be sensitive. Because of this, we each rely on different ingredients to treat our specific needs. And while we all love our pricey serums and salves, some of our all-time favorite products happen to be from the drugstore. Don’t believe me? Here are the under-$15 picks each of us swear by.
