June 19, 2020 at 01:00PM Ahmad Wali’s journey to America was years in the making, but what he remembers most vividly is how time froze when they were in the air. The Afghan-born Wali had finally secured a Special Immigrant Visa, affording him permanent legal residence in the United States, and to reach America, Wali and his family took a local plane to Kabul, followed by an international flight to Dubai and a 15-hour flight to New York. The trans-Atlantic flight lasted for what seemed like an eternity. He and his kids played games, took naps, ate snacks, paced the cramped aisles between the rows of seats, and still had hours remaining. When they finally landed and made it through customs, Wali felt indescribably happy. He remembers thinking, “I’m one of the luckiest people to be in the U.S., because my family is safe. My life is safe.” First issued in 2006, Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) have been granted to approximately 20,000 local nationals and their families who face threats in Iraq or Afghanistan as a result of their service to U.S. forces. Ben Wormington, a marine who enlisted after 9/11, worked alongside local translators on each of his three deployments to Iraq. “Interpreters are like glasses,” Wormington says. “They bring everything into focus.” Wormington relied heavily on local nationals to provide clarity on the landscape, the attitude of civilians, and when something is amiss—for example, when not to trust a local due to an obscure tattoo indicating prior nefarious

The Storied History of Juneteenth
June 18, 2020 at 10:18PM Juneteenth, a holiday that honors the end of slavery in the United States, has been celebrated by Black Americans for the last 155 years. But this year, nationwide protests following the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and other Black people at the hands of police have sparked an unprecedented interest in the day from non-Black people. READ NEXT How to Actually Be a Better Ally We Need a Black Lives Matter Activist in Congress Over 90 Black Creators and Tastemakers to Follow The American education system has largely white-washed history, crediting President Abraham Lincoln with freeing slaves by signing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 and ending the Civil War. But it would actually be two more years before slavery was officially ended, when Gen. Gordon Granger and a group of Union troops arrived in Galveston, TX to tell slaves of their freedom. It’s one of many facts about the experience of the Black community that many white Americans are learning about and acknowledging, perhaps for the first time. “Juneteenth is now on people’s radar even though we have been using it to validate our existence which has been wiped away from us for generations,” James Felton Keith, who is running for a seat in New York’s 13th Congressional District, told ABC News. “Juneteenth truly represents freedom.” Ahead, what to know about Juneteenth’s history, why people are fighting to make it a national holiday, and how you can help honor the day. The Stylists Shaping Music Now
June 18, 2020 at 09:55PM When Courtney Love traded her “kinderwhore” trappings for an Atelier Versace gown that clung to her like Saran Wrap at the 1997 Oscars, some fans felt betrayed—as though their grunge goddess had sold out. But these days, when a young artist like Billie Eilish shows up on a red carpet in Gucci or Chanel, it doesn’t feel like a corporate co-option of a subculture. Instead, musicians like Eilish, FKA twigs, and Solange Knowles have become innovators—molding designer fashion in their images, rather than bending to some outside idea of it. Of course, music has always influenced fashion, but now the relationship between the two feels less like an extreme makeover and more like a collaboration, with pop stars consistently wearing the most daring, directional looks from the runway. Think of Cardi B in floral Richard Quinn, complete with full face mask, or Eilish in an oversize Burberry check ensemble and a bonnet cap at this year’s Brit Awards. Cardi B, styled by Kollin Carter. Their jobs can be launchpads to the design world, too: Jahleel Weaver, Rihanna’s stylist, is now deputy creative director of her brand, Fenty. Maggie Rogers, styled by Kat Typaldos

Laverne Cox Is Highlighting Trans Representation in a New Netflix Documentary
June 18, 2020 at 06:03PM With the new documentary Disclosure, executive producer Laverne Cox, director Sam Feder, and producer Amy Scholder offer a much-needed, in-depth look at the history of transgender representation on-screen. The doc sifts through trans portrayals in film and television, going as far back as 1914’s A Florida Enchantment to as recent as 1999’s Boys Don’t Cry and 2018’s Pose. Featuring commentary from Cox and trans artists and creators including Lilly Wachowski, Yance Ford, Mj Rodriguez, Jamie Clayton, and Chaz Bono, the work outlines how far trans stories have come, their evolution throughout the years, and how they reflect society’s concepts of gender and sexuality. After first premiering at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, Disclosure will finally be available to stream on Netflix this Friday, June 19. And it couldn’t come at a more pressing time. The title will hit the streaming platform just days after the Trump administration scrapped legislation that would protect transgender people from health care discrimination, in the wake of author J.K. Rowling’s transphobic tweets and essay, and as Black trans lives continue to be taken—and often forgotten, misgendered, and deadnamed—by racist violence and police brutality. “That’s the paradox of our representation, is the more we are seen, the more we are violated,” advocate and writer Tiq Milan says in the Disclosure trailer. Jowsey addressed some of her claims in his own 10-minute response video. Farago had discussed how he had issues with their arguments: “We would argue every now and then, but it was never, for me, relationship-ending, and I think for him, small little things just ended up turning into relationship-ending arguments.” She also said he wanted her to hold off publicly announcing the split: “I was like, ‘Okay, if this is what you want, then let’s announce to everyone,’” she said. “He said that he didn’t want to do that yet because there was rumors and accusations being brought up by people and stuff like that, so he didn’t want to validate those things by releasing that we were going to take a break.” Then she discussed the accusations about him and how their break became permanent despite appearing not to be at first: I personally, genuinely thought that it was just like a two-week thing, and we were going to be fine when I move there, and everything was going to be amazing, and
