June 18, 2020 at 04:29PM Urban Decay’s newest UD Global Citizen on moving beyond buzzwords and revolutionizing beauty standards. Normani was forced to reckon with universal beauty standards, ones that didn’t often include Black women like her, from a young age. Starting in elementary school, where she was only one of three Black students, she would study the rich, deep tone of her skin and the kinks and thickness of her hair in the mirror. These are the same qualities classmates cruelly mocked and the ones Normani would wish away in front of the mirror, hoping for a transformation that wouldn’t make her feel like the “other.” “I remember asking my mom to straighten my hair because I became very exhausted, having to explain why my hair appeared so different from theirs,” she tells ELLE.com. “I often wondered what life would’ve been like if my skin were lighter.” Now, instead of following beauty norms, Normani is helping define them. Normani is joining Urban Decay as the brand’s newest UD Global Citizen. The singer joins Urban Decay’s new class of Global Citizens alongside Riverdale star Camila Mendes and Hong Kong singer G.E.M for the brand’s Pretty Different campaign, which celebrates these women for their individuality and unapologetic nature, and pushing boundaries in their respective fields. Each UD Global Citizen will support the brand’s launches, including the newest iteration of Urban Decay’s Naked series, the Ultraviolet Eyeshadow Palette. Rayshard Brooks Once Spoke Out About Criminal Justice Reform
June 18, 2020 at 04:01PM n June 12, a 27-year-old black man named Rayshard Brooks was fatally shot by police during an altercation that Atlanta Mayor Keisha Bottoms said didn’t warrant “a justified use of deadly force.” One minute, Brooks was calmly chatting with the two officers who found him sleeping in his car. The next, they were all wrestling on the ground and fighting over a Taser gun. The incident turned deadly when Brooks took the Taser and tried to run away. Two days later, Atlanta’s police chief resigned, and the officer who shot and killed Brooks was fired. He’s been charged with 11 counts, including felony murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Atlanta citizens incensed by the killing have taken to the streets to protest. June 18, 2020 at 03:26PM Remember when primary debates dominated the headlines? If 2020 has taught us anything—and between the government’s response to the pandemic and the national protests, it’s taught us a lot—it’s that we can’t lose sight of who’s in office. And it’s not just about who sits in the White House. It’s about selecting the state legislators, district attorneys, and sheriffs who wield tremendous power over your community. Though social distancing and threats of voter suppression can make casting a ballot seem intimidating, it’s still the single most effective way of being heard and making a difference. Marisa Tomei Is the Best Part of The King of Staten Island
June 18, 2020 at 03:13PM arisa Tomei has a new movie out. The King of Staten Island is a Judd Apatow-directed comedy-drama inspired by SNL breakout Pete Davidson’s life, including the death of his firefighter father on 9/11. But it’s Tomei who deserves every accolade for her portrayal of Davidson’s saintly mother Margie. The King of Staten Island is a moving film that shows New Yorkers’ resilience after tragedy firsthand, which feels especially pertinent at a time when we could all use a little inspiration (and frankly, something good to watch in quarantine). Equal parts touching and darkly funny, the story is grounded in empathy for its protagonist Scott (Davidson), who struggles to accept his painful loss and waddles through a stunted adolescence, causing his mom a great deal of agita as she attempts to move on. Comedian Bill Burr proves his acting chops as Margie’s love interest, who’s also a firefighter, and Maude Apatow steals every scene as Scott’s younger sister, Claire (based on Davidson’s real-life sister Casey). Over the past three weeks, Tomei, a longtime activist, has been busy using her platform to guide her 1.2 million Instagram followers toward useful resources, including candid conversations about race from
Kristen Wiig and Fiancé Avi Rothman Secretly Welcomed Twins Earlier This Year
June 18, 2020 at 03:09PM Kristen Wiig has reportedly been quarantining as a family of four. Us Weekly reported on Wednesday that the former SNL star secretly welcomed twins via surrogacy with fiancé Avi Rothman earlier this year. Page Six also captured Wiig, Rothman, and their two new arrivals on a walk in Los Angeles yesterday. Neither parent has yet confirmed the news. Wiig kept her motherhood status mostly under wraps. However, she did allude to becoming a parent while hosting an at-home Mother’s Day episode of Saturday Night Live in May. “This is the Mother’s Day show, and at SNL, it’s a very special time to celebrate moms,” Wiig said during her virtual monologue, later adding, “I don’t know if I truly appreciated my mom the first 45 years of my life. But this year I’m feeling especially grateful for her advice, her love. I’m so thankful for all the things she’s taught me, like preparing me to be a mom myself.” This content is imported from YouTube. The couple dated for three years and were first spotted together in 2016 while vacationing in Hawaii. Again, news of their relationship didn’t make headlines until months after their romance began. Wiig was previously married to actor Hayes Hargrove from 2005 to 2009, per People. She
Kate Middleton Says It’s Been a ‘Really Difficult Time’ in Quarantine During Candid Speech
June 18, 2020 at 02:49PM Kate Middleton gave a long and rare candid speech about emotional health to children during her virtual appearance at the Oak National Academy weekly assembly, which aired today. The Duchess touched on the importance of kindness, opening up about how being in quarantine is hard emotionally for everyone, including herself. She said, via Hello!: “We all have our ups and downs, especially when things change in our lives as they have in so many ways recently. This can cause us to have a huge range of different feelings. Sometimes these feelings may be good, but sometimes they may be uncomfortable, and we feel worried, angry or upset. “Being unable to see your friends or spend time with your family will undoubtedly be frustrating for you, just as it is for them. It’s been a really difficult time for us all. But it’s important to know that these feelings and frustrations are totally normal, and that they won’t last forever.” “As we help others, we mustn’t forget to nurture ourselves by taking the time to focus on the things that make us feel happy too. This might be playing our favorite game, being outside, or talking to our friends. They all help with our mental wellbeing. Thank you for inviting me to speak to you today. Look after yourselves, reach out when you need help, and do your part to support those in need.” This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same
Jennifer McClellan Announces Bid to Become Virginia’s First Black Female Governor
June 18, 2020 at 01:51PM Historically, women have needed to be convinced to enter politics. But since the 2016 presidential election, thousands of women announced their plans to run for public office. And we want them to win. So we’re giving them examples of women who have run. The point: You can too. Back in March, the Washington Post reported that 2020 was Virginia’s Year of the Woman. With Democrats controlling the state’s legislature for the first time in decades, a record number of female lawmakers helped approve the federal Equal Rights Amendment, protect abortion, combat sex discrimination, and more. Then late last month, state delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy announced her bid for governor of Virginia. And today, state Senator Jennifer McClellan has officially joined the race. If either of them were to win the 2021 election, they’d be the first Black female governor of Virginia—and the United States. McClellan spent 11 years in the House of Delegates and then another four in the state Senate; she was the first House member to ever be pregnant while in office. Now, against the backdrop of the pandemic and the ongoing fight for racial justice, McClellan is prepared for more. Below, McClellan on how she decided to run. Iwas always interested in government from a history perspective. My dad was born in 1925 and my mom in 1932, and I listened to the stories of them growing up in the segregated South during the Depression, during the New Deal, living through the Civil Rights era. My dad’s love of history sparked
Athlete A Follows the Investigation Into USA Gymnastics’ Sexual Abuse Scandal
June 17, 2020 at 11:55PM Five years ago today, Maggie Nichols’ gymnastic coach submitted the first report of doctor Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse of gymnasts to officials at USA Gymnastics. More than 300 women would eventually come forward to accuse Nassar of sexually abusing them under the guise of providing medical treatment during athletic training. The trailer for Athlete A, a new Netflix documentary that follows The Indianapolis Star‘s investigation into USA Gymnastics, details the events that occurred after survivors broke their silence. READ NEXT Aly Raisman Calls Out USA Gymnastics in Statement Gymnast McKayla Maroney Alleges Sexual Abuse Top USA Gymnastics Board Members Resign The documentary, from filmmakers Bonni Chen and Jon Shenk, chronicles the work of the team of reporters who ultimately exposed one of the most egregious scandals in sports history. “Athlete A” refers to Nichols, who revealed her identity as Nassar’s first accuser in January 2018. Survivors who followed Nichols’ lead in speaking out include Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, and Aly Raisman. Maggie Nichols in Athlete A. MELISSA J. PERENSON / NETFLIX In 2018, Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison on several counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct during his tenure at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics. Dozens of coaches have been banned and three USA Gymnastics board members resigned in the fallout. But the fight for full justice and transparency continues; today, more than 120 survivors of Nassar’s abuse submitted a letter asking the Department of Justice to release its inspector general’s report on the FBI’s handling of the case. Pose Star Ryan Jamaal Swain Asks, ‘Why Is It Such A Laborious Task For Black Lives to Matter?’
June 17, 2020 at 09:40PM It’s June, we’re still in the midst of a pandemic, and while we’d normally be celebrating the kickoff to summer and Pride month, we’re in the midst of international crisis, with unrest finally coming to a head. We are urging the world to face the person in the mirror and change their harmful, dangerous ways, to fight to end the horrific treatment of black and brown people in America by police. George Floyd, whose life was tragically cut short by police officers, has finally been laid to rest in his hometown of Houston. Protesters all over America are still in the streets, calling for justice in his case, as well as for Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Iyanna Dior and many, many others. Everything feels broken, and people are tired. While it’s still Pride month, members of the community are using their platforms to speak out about the injustices that plague BIPOC people and the LGBTQIA+ community. To kick off the celebrations at Hearst, Hearst Black Culture hosted a conversation with Ryan Jamaal Swain, an actor in the hit TV show Pose. Swain is no stranger to using his platform. A self-proclaimed lover of people, he sat down with Tommy J. Atkins of Hearst Media to discuss his views on black liberation, effective ally ship, and intersectionality. Watch below.
