November 30, 2018 at 07:52AM Like dad sneakers on a Fashion Week runway, cannabis is suddenly popping up in places where it would have been shunned five years ago. Entrepreneurs are openly sharing how they microdose it at work, Whole30 devotees are including it in their meal plans, and it’s even become a staple in our period care routines. And certainly this was happening pre-2013, but thanks to a recent wave of legalization and a shifting of societal norms, more people are embracing weed in their daily lives. And that includes during pregnancy. The number of women who reported using cannabis while pregnant rose by nearly two-thirds between 2002 and 2014, according to two separate studies. This is in contrast to alcohol and cigarette use, which both declined slightly during that time period. (It should be said that the overall number of mothers using cannabis while pregnant is pretty small, and is much smaller than the number of those who use cigarettes or alcohol.) But given the fact that you’re not even supposed to do innocuous things like use retinol or eat sushi while pregnant…is using marijuana during pregnancy okay? Why pregnant women turn to weed Most doctors are not on board with this trend. “The current recommendations from government and medical societies are that there is no known safe amount of cannabis use during pregnancy,” says Kerri Masutto, MD, a functional medicine doctor at Parsley Health in San Francisco. “Current guidelines recommend treating marijuana use during pregnancy the same as alcohol and

An exhaustive list everything I’ve said (and done) to leave a bad date early
November 30, 2018 at 05:30AM If you believe Sex and the City at face value, you probably think New York City is the greatest place ever to date. After all, options are endless, with the vast majority of people being both eligible and desirable. And all you have to do to take advantage is just walk out onto the street and bump into ’em for a good, ole meet-cute. LOL. As someone who has spent nearly the majority of her dating years in this human-dense town, let me tell you: The situation is less so Carrie and Big (or Aidan or Berger or Alexander Petrovsky) than it is a horrific iteration of Jumanji. After being burnt enough times via bad dates that weren’t just boring but also drained me of my precious time, finances, and joy, I decided to never go into one of these situations exposed, schedually speaking, ever again. I refused to spend even one more minute anxiously clock-watching through gritted teeth as my companion waxed poetic about ventriloquism—seriously. Enter: My trusty arsenal of exit strategies. After being burnt enough times via bad dates that weren’t just boring but also drained me of my precious time, finances, and joy, I decided to never go into one exposed, schedually speaking, ever again. Enter: My trusty arsenal of exit strategies. The best exit strategies are the ones initiated before the date even starts. For example, while making plans, I’ll usually plant a vague, noncommittal seed like, “Yeah that should work, though I may
The only pairs of cozy socks you’ll need this winter
November 30, 2018 at 04:54AM At the moment, my sock drawer is a mess, probably due in part to the bomb-cyclone blizzard and all of the other frigid days I had to get through last winter. This year is going to be different, though. I’m going to stock up on the warmest cozy socks I can find. And they’re going to be cute. Boring, itchy wool socks need not apply. Sure, it might sound silly, but I truly believe that my life will be better if I can sort out my socks. It’s a feeling I’m only more certain of after speaking to Randy Goldberg, co-founder of the socially responsible sock company Bombas. “A good pair of socks is the bedrock of hygge season,” he tells me. “The foundation. Where it all starts.” It’s hard to argue with this logic if you’ve ever had cold, wet feet. Thankfully, a lot of brands have really stepped up their sock game this season. L.L. Bean, a mainstay in many sock drawers, has partnered with Darn Tough to design an exclusive sock (produced proudly in New England) packed with all the natural benefits of merino wool. Bombas is also big on using the fiber for its socks because “merino is a natural moisture-wicking fabric ensuring your feet stay dry all day,” Goldberg explains. Aside from material upgrades, simple changes such as adding cushion and comfort, without bulk, and removing the seaming across the toes are capable of making socks even cozier. Before they
How to style high-waisted jeans so you don’t wind up with a front butt
November 29, 2018 at 07:56AM One of the more embarrassing trends I participated in during my youth was super tight low-rise jeans. The kind that were so low they would show a sliver of buttcrack when you bent over. (Also, I don’t think I’ve ever written the word buttcrack in my professional career.) Paired with a similarly tight-fitting top and one of those triple grommet belts, it was a look that makes me incredibly grateful that Instagram #ootd wasn’t a thing then. But that’s how it was in the early aughts; the thought of anything high-waisted was as foreign to me as the concept of cauliflower as a pizza crust. We live in a world with 3D printers and nearly-sentient robots. I feel like we shouldn’t have to settle for front butt in our otherwise flattering high-rise denim. Now, however, I can’t get enough of high-waisted jeans. Like if the rise isn’t over 10-inches I’m not buying. I’m very short, so I appreciate the leg-lengthening properties of high-rise pants. Plus, they don’t have the same muffin-top potential as the low-rise jeans of my youth. But there’s a reason shopping for such denim has inspired many a meme—it’s hard to find a pair that fits just right. You know what I’m talking about. The dreaded front butt. That pooch in the front where the fabric gapes and makes it look like you have, as the term suggests, a butt in the front. Granted, I’d rather deal with front butt over exposed
Some of the coolest new sneakers are coming from these eco-friendly brands
November 29, 2018 at 07:39AM As sustainability becomes a greater focus in the fashion industry, it’s getting easier to shop for ethically made wardrobes staples from dresses to jeans and outerwear. But for the wellness junkie who’s habitually signed up for yoga, boxing, and barre classes—and (literally) running errands in between—sneakers are a must from performance-based to fashion styles. So, it’s refreshing to see so many of the coolest kicks coming from eco-friendly brands right now. “It used to be if you wanted an animal-free sneaker, your only option was fast-fashion and if you wanted a sustainable pair of kicks, your only option was leather-clad,” says Ashlee Piper, a sustainability expert and author of Give a Sh*t: Do Good. Live Better. Save the Planet. “Now, brands like Veja, Native Shoes, and Keep bring all the style and comfort of a sneaker with cruelty-free options that are also ethically produced,” she says. While a functional trainer is a strong starting point, fashion-forward kicks—from wear-with-everything white lace-ups by Veja to Stella McCartney’s new techy, sock-style sneakers—come with an ethical stamp of approval. “We wanted to create a sneaker that would be made better and that respects the environment and workers,” says Veja co-founder Sébastien Kopp, whose business doesn’t pay for advertising or marketing as a way to invest the company’s entire budget in their moral manufacturing processes. “Our sneakers would be more expensive to make, but we knew we could keep the price on par with other brands if we didn’t allocate money for
Jane Fonda’s finally designing workout clothes and TBH, we can’t believe it took this long
November 28, 2018 at 12:00PM Jane Fonda epitomized the ’80s fitness craze—down to her bodysuits and leg warmers. But somehow, the woman who launched a thousand (technically 17 million) at-home cardio workout tapes never created a collection of activewear…until now. Proving it’s never too late to start a passionate side hustle, Fonda, 80, is adding another hyphen to her multifaceted career by launching her own lifestyle brand. The new line is being created in partnership with the broadcast network Evine. When it launches this spring, it’ll include activewear, athleisure items, and health and wellness products designed with women over 50 in mind. “We are, after all, the fastest growing demographic in the world,” Fonda told WWD. (The woman really knows her way around a one-liner, amirite?) And I know, I know, it seems like every. day. another famous person announces that they’re working on a fashion label. I’ve certainly thrown side eyes at more than a few that feel, let’s just say, inauthentic. But Fonda’s seems like the real deal (I say seems only because there are currently no images of her first collection). What I do know for sure is that given how many decades she’s spent putting other people’s workout clothes through serious sweat tests, I imagine she’ll come to the drawing board with more than a few good ideas. And she plans to put all that knowledge to use by weighing in on all facets of her lifestyle brand from designs to fabrics and where it’s manufactured. While
Cross these presents most likely to be purged off your holiday shopping list
November 28, 2018 at 09:30AM Everyone has had that instant moment of regret after seeing someone’s less-than-stellar, fake-excited response upon opening a gift you gave them. Sure, you may have been really pumped about that new activewear set—and even considered keeping it for yourself!—but you already know an “it-just-didn’t-fit-right” excuse is in the near future. (Honestly, it’s already giving me flashbacks to when my parents misheard my Backstreet Boys CD request for the Beastie Boys.) Now, if only there was an easy way to prevent the disappointment altogether…. This year, the online thrift store thredUP is saving you a whole lot of hassle (and money!) by releasing some insider intel on the most-purged holiday gifts. In January, the site sees a 60 percent increase in never-worn items for sale—that’s approximately 250,000 new-with-tags additions, which are most likely things people got for the holidays and didn’t want. Some of those items might not be too surprising with the number-one unwanted item being J.Crew cardigans, followed by ASOS maxi dresses, Banana Republic ruffle dresses, and Victoria’s Secret swimsuits. But two popular wellness-y items also didn’t make the cut: No one wanted Lululemon cutout shirts or Nike sneakers, either. So, what should you be getting your friends and family this year? The brands with the least regret—also known as the items thredUP receives without the tags attached that people have already worn and loved—are from Everlane and the outdoors-centric company REI, as well as Citizens of Humanity and designers like Prada, Gucci, and Coach. But if you’re still totally unsure what
Please meet the love of my life: the coat I’ve worn every winter for nearly 10 years
November 28, 2018 at 06:27AM Every woman has those power pieces that supercharge her personal style. And we’ve found, by walking up to enough strangers on the street (and women in our own office), that if you gas her up, she’ll share her best fashion advice with you. We’re collecting these pearls of wisdom in a new series, Good Style. Today our Senior Food and Health Editor Jessie Van Amburg waxes poetic about the one winter coat that’ll always have her heart. Here’s a fun fact about me: I never owned a real winter coat until I was 18 years old. No, my parents were not horrible, neglectful people straight out of Oliver Twist—we lived in Los Angeles, where it rarely ever gets below 50 degrees, even in the winter. I had peacoat-type jackets, and lots of sweatshirts and sweaters…but no winter coat. But then I went to college in Boston, and my flimsy $30 jacket was not going to cut it for a frigid East Coast winter. So for Christmas during my freshman year, my mom got me a beautiful red wool car coat. I have worn this coat every single winter since—going on a decade now. I get compliments on it all the time. And every time someone asks me where I got it, I proudly say, “Land’s End.” Photo: Jessie Van Amburg No, Land’s End is definitely not the sexiest of brands. It doesn’t have the tried-and-true caché of L.L. Bean (why people get so lit over those duck
Sustainable fashion that’ll make you look good—and feel good about wearing it
November 27, 2018 at 07:20AM Ashlee Piper started wearing sustainable fashion nearly a decade ago—way before faux fur was everywhere and you could buy eco-friendly clothing at H&M. She was not what you’d have called a conscientous consumer at the time…to put it mildly. “I was a fast fashion disaster,” says Piper, who is now a sustainability expert and the author of Give a Sh*t: Do Good. Live Better. Save the Planet. “When I got into sustainable fashion, I spent a few months working with what I already had, paring down by selling or donating items, and strategizing what I wanted to acquire and the most ethical way to get it.” It was a pain-staking process made more challenging by a lack of options. Times, though, as they say, have changed and sustainable fashion has come a long way. The category that, for a long time, only conjured images of oatmeal-colored clothing and shapeless burlap sack dresses is evolving at a rapid clip with brands from indie to mass delivering on modern designs with ethics. Everlane, Reformation, Eileen Fisher, and Stella McCartney have all planted flags in eco-friendly fashion—each company is proof that social responsibility and style can go hand in hand, whether you’re shopping for a luxury bag or wardrobe basics like jeans and tees. But they’re only the tip of the sustainable fashion iceberg, so to speak. There are more eco-friendly labels today than ever before, and Rachael Wang, a stylist and brand consultant (who transitioned to a vegan wardrobe this past year),
