November 14, 2018 at 07:26AM Here’s a bright idea for you. Now that it’s dark at 5 p.m. (thanks, Daylight Saving Time), be the light you want to see in this world by wearing neon knitwear. The DayGlo trend that got its start this summer has resurfaced this fall as cozy clothing in fluorescent shades. High-voltage hues add an element of surprise to otherwise basic pieces such as beanies or boxy sweaters like this electric crewneck. The key to pulling off neons is to wear them with confidence and not be afraid to shine. That being said, you can tone down any tone by pairing it with light-wash jeans and simple white sneakers or boots. You can also amp up the wow-factor with a full-on monochromatic outfit. For the latter, keep it in the color family but play with different textures, like velvet or corduroy to make things interesting. Either way, neon knits are one cure for the seasonal doldrums and general feelings of meh that can set in this time of year. It’s like color therapy for your closet. Exclusive: How Arianna Huffington course-corrects stress in just one minute
November 14, 2018 at 04:00AM Arianna Huffington’s list of accomplishments is at least as long as the total amount of hours she’s spent asleep (which is to say, a lot). And with her latest venture Rise & Thrive, a partnership between Thrive Global (Huffington’s enterprise for tackling burnout) and WeWork (a global network of coworking spaces), the superstar entrepreneur-slash-author is channeling all of her expert intel into one mission: Making workplace culture more wellness-minded. The first step of the partnership will be an immersive, all-day experience on January 19th at Rise by We in New York City ($299), where participants will become quick studies on how to keep well-being top of mind, even if they spend 40-plus hours a week at their desk. “By bringing together both of our communities, we have the unique opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind wellness experience for more people, allowing them to pursue personal growth for a sustainable and enhanced quality of life,” says Avi Yehiel, head of wellness at WeWork. If you’re not located in NYC, you can still benefit from Huffington’s wisdom, because she shared her thoughts on how to live your best, wellness-infused life with us. Below, Arianna Huffington talks the future of mental health, how to boss your to-do list, and more. Veggie-crunching and lip-smacking videos are the ASMR obsession that has got to stop
November 14, 2018 at 01:00AM When ASMR, or autonomous sensory meridian response, first started to gain traction a few years back, I’ll admit I was skeptical. ASMR describes the feeling you get when certain sounds produce a relaxation effect—some folks even explain it as a tingling sensation, or a brain orgasm. I was more likely to describe it as giving me the heebie-jeebies. There was something unnerving to me about hearing someone whisper into a microphone while rubbing their hands across a balloon or untangling earphones or applying makeup. But the more I explored, the more the videos broke me down, and I started to understand. I’ll even admit to feeling kind of relaxed when listening to a woman whisper while running her fingers over the bristle of a brush. This was all good and fine (but, like, honestly still pretty weird) when noises were limited to innocuous tappings and crinkles—but then things went haywire. Unceremoniously, feathers on a microphone and fingernails drumming against food-storage containers gave way to far less ear-pleasing sounds when I came upon…wait a sec, I have close my eyes and focus on not gagging. Okay, …when I came upon food-noise videos. Yep, YouTubers are combining mukbangs, the South Korea-born trend of eating a large quantity of food and livestreaming it to millions (millions!), with ASMR. Suddenly, instead of soft, comforting noises, I was visually and sonically assaulted with gulps from a straw or the wet chewing of a cheeseburger. There are no shortage of extreme crunch

Why I always wear sneakers on a first date
November 13, 2018 at 09:24AM In my experience, first dates are kind of like pilot episodes of TV shows. Sometimes you get a Stranger Things and you immediately know you’re gonna be binge-watching; sometimes you get more of a slow-build Mindhunter that takes a few episodes (read: dates) to really get into; most times, though, you get something like I Want to Marry Harry and you know within 30 seconds that, no, this is not going to work. As someone who recently re-entered the dating world, it is what I would classify as a lot. But, unfortunately, first dates are kind of inevitable if you’re looking for a relationship (even a casual one). Deciding what to wear on said first date is a particularly stressful sartorial challenge. Through a bit of trial-and-error, I’ve concluded that no matter your outfit, sneakers are the perfect footwear choice. I came upon this realization—nay, epiphany—earlier in the year while prepping for one of my very first Bumble dates. Here’s a little mise en scene for the date: We were going to a cool, dimly lit bar in Venice. I picked out a flirty little dress that was both comfortable and flattering. But every shoe I paired with it just felt off. Not to be dramatic (but definitely to be dramatic), I would rather give up cheese for six months than wear heels on a first date. I think making awkward small talk while being strapped into painful shoes is actually one of Dante’s circles
The ultimate, editor-approved guide to running shoes
November 13, 2018 at 08:19AM Like delicate little snowflakes, everyone has different needs when it comes to their running shoes. Some people run barefoot and others need all the foam cushioning. But once you find the pair that’s right for you, it’s pretty much one of those match-made-in-heaven kind of moments. You know. And as for the rest of us? Well we’re still looking for the best running shoes around. “It’s always important to note that as runners, we’re all different,” says Jess Movold, a coach at New York’s Mile High Run Club, a running-focused boutique fitness studio. “That’s what makes everyone so special—runners come in all shapes and sizes, and so it’s important to take all of these things into consideration when looking for the right running shoe.” Perhaps you run on your toes, or have fallen arches, or deal with pronation in your gait—these and numerous other variables come into play when you’re reenacting Cinderella at your local Foot Locker. “Comfort, fit, and form are all very important, specific, and personalized things to keep in mind when looking for your shoe,” says Movold. So unlike other shoe shopping, this one ain’t just about how they look (I’ll leave that one for heels and such). Keep scrolling for the current best, editor-approved running shoes of each category, below. This flight attendant-approved hack is absolutely lifesaving for forgetful travelers
November 13, 2018 at 07:47AM There’s no official count on how many people end up forgetting their passports, laptops, and wallets in hotel safes every year, but chances are it’s pretty darn high. In the frenzy of packing up before your flight, it’s embarrassingly easy to forget about that tiny little safe in hotel closet…and the fact that you stashed your most valuable stuff in there for safe-keeping. Whoops. Luckily, there’s a simple travel hack that will prevent you from experiencing that full-on panic. If anyone knows how to avoid the biggest travel mishaps, it’s flight attendants. (It’s literally their job, after all.) And Ty Opoku Adjei, who works for British Airways, swears by a brilliantly simple technique that makes it nearly impossible to leave your passport behind. “When we go on holiday, it’s natural to want to keep your valuables in the hotel room safe, but some people make it all the way to the airport only to realize they’ve left their passport there,” she told Business Insider. “My top tip is to keep one of your shoes you plan to wear on your journey home in the safe. If you do this, you’ll never leave the hotel room without checking the safe ever again.” Pretty genius, huh? Unless you’re totally unfazed by walking around with only one shoe, there’s no way you’re going to head out without everything you need. If you’re one of those people who just doesn’t use the hotel safe at all…you should. While some
Meet the booking platform that wants to give Mindbody some serious competition
November 13, 2018 at 07:27AM Up to now, if you’ve booked a boutique fitness class online, more often than not, you’ve had to create a Mindbody account (or several) in order to snag a spot. Keeping track of various log-in details and not being able to connect accounts is a pain for users and a problem for studios that’s only increased as the boutique fitness bubble’s expanded. But a new platform, Mariana Tek, is trying to streamline the process in as few clicks as possible. It’s the brainchild of Stacey Seldin, John Huffsmith, and Bob Rademacher—who are responsible for building out the custom booking program for Flywheel Sports. “We want to make booking reservations as quick and easy as possible,” Seldin, Mariana Tek’s chief executive officer, tells me. “We shouldn’t have to take fitness classes to relieve the stress of booking them.” About 11 boutique brands in all, including Barry’s Bootcamp, MNDFL, SculptHouse, Modo Yoga NYC, and Brrrn, have already incorporated Mariana Tek into their backends. And Seldin and her team have been quietly talking to several more but aren’t revealing who until studios are ready to go public with that news. So what exactly does a studio switching over to Mariana Tek mean for you? In addition to the simple booking features, there are also some major benefits that make your in-studio experience even better. If you’re a traveler or don’t like to stick to one location, you’ll only need to create one account within a brand, which gives you access
How the Olsen Twins helped me discover blazers are the key to living your best life
November 13, 2018 at 03:59AM Every woman has those power pieces that supercharge her personal style. And we’ve found, by walking up to enough strangers on the street (and women in our own office), that if you gas her up, she’ll share her best fashion advice with you. Starting today, we’re collecting these pearls of wisdom in a new series, Good Style. First up is our associate beauty editor Rachel Lapidos, who swears blazers are the key to living her best life. Keep reading to hear why and how they came to be her sartorial spirit animal. To me, blazers are kind of like a really good pair of jeans or a bold lip in that putting one on immediately makes me feel more confident. I started wearing them in high school in Texas, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the Olsen Twins when they used to be on the cover of US Weekly all the time, rocking blazers in the coolest way possible. I got so lucky back then on my hunts while shopping at Goodwills and Salvation Army stores—even sometimes in the little boys’ sections. Lately though, I’ve been going to Etsy for my vintage shopping. I found my red blazer there—I like them a little longer, structured, and oversized; it makes them more interesting. Photo: Well+Good Creative At this point, I wear them literally everywhere, pretty much all year long. They look great with all different types of shirts: band T-shirts or just vintage T-shirts in
Nike’s latest Air Max ’97 proves layering isn’t just for sweaters
November 12, 2018 at 07:23AM The Air Max ’97 already sits atop the list of iconic sneakers every fit girl should know about. But its designers aren’t resting on their laurels. Tomorrow, Nike drops the latest iteration of the classic kick, which it’s dubbed the “Layered Look.” The sneaker’s colorway takes its “inspiration from the classic layered look of a hoodie and flannel,” according to Nike.com. The base layer is a plaid (sorry, not buffalo), suede upper that bleeds from red on the tongue to deep blue at the toe, and is topped by an outer layer of spruce green, all of which is ringed in cranberry, activewear’s color of choice this season. In other words, these running shoes encapsulate holiday hype. Photo: Nike For those yet to be indoctrinated into sneakerhead subculture, Nike released the OG Air Max in 1987. It was the first sneaker the sportswear company ever created where the air pocket that lent the shoe its cushion could be seen. And the aesthetic is rare to come by these days, with visible air pockets in running shoes having been largely replaced by foam. The family of Air Max sneakers has been retooled several times over the years, but the Air Max ’97 (designed by Christian Tesser and spired by the sleek look of Japanese bullet trains) remains one of the most coveted styles—both at original retail and on the secondhand market. Nike’s released several new colorways of the sneaker since it celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2017. The Layered
