April 22, 2020 at 09:03PM Whitney Port is one of the latest celebrities to create a fun fashion Instagram challenge while staying at home. While a lot of us have been lounging at home in sweats and watching movies, Whitney came up with an idea that got her creative juices flowing and made use out of her wardrobe. (Looks like she’s not the only one who is sick of wearing sweats.) In the challenge, she teamed up with her stylists Kara and Brit Elkin to dress up as characters from classic movies. She asked fans to comment on who they think she is and reveals the correct answer in her IGS later in the day. Another thing we love about the challenge? The outfits she wears will include small fashion brands that are struggling at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic. Whitney started off the challenge easy by posting a picture of herself dressed up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. She wore a blue gingham Smythe dress, a wicker basket bag by Storets, and red flats by AGL shoes. The spring summer 2020 runways were notably more commercial than usual, with a focus on classic legacy buys rather than whimsical and artistic creations, which could potentially fall into the fad or impractical category. Every fashion buyer I have spoken to about the fashion week in September used the word “realistic” as the overarching theme. Another buzzword for spring 2020 fashion is “wearability”—a word I am usually loathe to use to describe clothes, given it is their basic function, but it’s an adjective that keeps being used to describe the aesthetic for spring 2020. More and more people are curious about buying used garments and accessories than ever before as statistics about the impact of new clothing production and our consumption habits are revealed, and there’s no shortage of platforms to help us purchase and sell used fashion pieces from around the world. The success of this emerging model of business is what encouraged Partners & Babe founder Emily Watts-Luciani to launch an Instagram feed for Montreal-based vintage vendors. Some of it cute, but most of it questionable – mismatched pajamas or ripped and pilled sweats and trackpants. Then, when I started working from home daily and wearing lounge clothes on repeat, it got to me. While there is nowhere to go and no one to dress for, pleasing myself became enough of a reason to find a great pair of sweats that could serve both fashion and function. Turns out, the right pair was an unlikely contender I had snagged on a whim while walking by the Brandy Melville store in my neighborhood a few months back.
