I don’t care what fashion week says, wearing a low ponytail makes me look like Gaston

February 15, 2019 at 01:56PM by CWC We’re in the midst of the fashion week sprints (just as the catwalk lights in New York dim, they flash on in London)—a time I usually love because of all the fresh wardrobe, makeup, and hair inspo I’m able to absorb. I usually welcome all the haute trends, from bedazzled faces to cozy fleece dresses, with open arms. But this year, I feel personally attacked by one specific look—the low ponytail. It started innocuously enough with Ariana Grande trading in her signature high pony for an elastic secured at the nape of her neck. This, however, wasn’t an isolated incident—the hairstyle then spread like disease across red carpets, street style photos, and runways without discrimination. J. Lo and Camilla Cabello both sported the look at the Grammys, and what felt like a million designers (Ralph Lauren, Cushnie, Christian Siriano, Oscar de la Renta, the list goes on…) sent models down the runway this season with low-riding ponies. Being the trend fiend that I am, I’ve spent the better part of the last two weeks trying to wrestle my hair into this look—and let me tell you, it is not going well. Every single time I move my ponytail to the lower quadrant of my scalp, I look like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast—the animated version. I tried Mandy Moore’s CBD hack for making high heels more comfortable

February 15, 2019 at 07:00AM by CWC The phrase “beauty is pain” has been drilled into my brain ever since my mom took me to get my first eyebrow wax at age 12. But as a full-fledged adult, the idea of suffering for beauty just feels straight-up silly to me. Because…why? I’ve got plenty of other things in my life I need to suffer through, without adding anything beauty-related to the list. With that in mind, I am constantly looking for ways to make elements of my routine less painful—whether it’s cutting down my skin-care sessions to 1-minute, or skipping out on shampooing for, like, a week on end. While I’ve more or less gotten my beauty regimen down to an art, I’m still struggling a bit on the fashion front. And one thing I’ve never been able to figure out is how to comfortably wear high heels. In fact, most of the (really cute and really expensive) stilettos that I own wind up relegated to the back of my closet, because it’s just not worth it to me to suffer through hours upon hours of foot-related hell for the sake of completing an outfit. Which makes me sad! So recently, when I read that celebs prime their feet with CBD to make their own well-heeled lives more bearable, I knew I had to give it a try. As someone who already uses CBD for the sake of sleep and anxiety, I was excited at the prospect of finding yet another use

Come for Emily DiDonato’s DIY avocado face mask, stay for the lesson in self-love

February 14, 2019 at 09:17AM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qtc8TgUbBg&w=640&h=360] Models have it made. They get to travel the world, rock full glam on the regular, and wear the coolest designer fashion. But when American model Emily DiDonato isn’t hanging with her Maybelline crew or walking the red carpet, you’ll likely find her cozied up at home with some red wine in hand, wearing a bright green DIY avocado face mask. In the latest episode of The Avocado Show, DiDonato takes us inside her home to talk about her career and all the lessons she’s learned along the way. (For one, never, ever touch your eyebrows, she says.) While DiDonato has walked the runway for Balmain, Chanel, and Givenchy, to name a few, she shares why she’s never been a part of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. And the most surprising thing she’s learned in yoga teacher training? Energy transfer is real, you guys! Now, it wouldn’t be an avocado-themed show without some avocados, right? DiDonato teaches us how to make her favorite face mask, which only includes three ingredients: 1/4 avocado, 1/2 tsp honey, and 1 tsp yogurt. So pull up a chair, grab your ingredients. And, of course, this recipe means you can eat any leftover DIY avocado face mask on toast. Waste not, want not! When you’re done catching up on The Avocado Show, watch Well+Good’s other YouTube series You Versus Food to find out what a top nutritionist actually thinks about apple cider vinegar. If Vans and Converse had a love child, it would be Madewell’s brand-new sneakers

February 14, 2019 at 06:39AM by CWC To the movies. To dinner. To run errands. To walk the dog. Over the past two years, the team at Madewell has been doing some serious wear testing, and this time it has nothing to do with the signature denim or cozy sweaters that we’ve come to absolutely adore. This week the J.Crew sister brand debuted their first-ever unisex sneaker collection, inspired by old-school skate gear. “We worked really hard to nail the right shape and proportions, paying attention to every detail and measurement to get the perfect fit,” says Anne Crisafulli, head of merchandising at Madewell of their new sidewalk sneaker. “We created countless prototypes to create a style that’s comfortable from the moment you put it on to when you take them off at the end of the day.” Reminiscent of a Vans or Converse low-top, the sneaker comes in 9 different colorways that will evolve every season, some of which tout rainbow or animal print detailing found elsewhere in the spring collection (though, you’ll always be able to find the classic white). From sun-faded sage and pale parchment to black, the spring release has got options with both white and gum-colored soles. Their goal? To create a core collection for both men and women that’s unique, timeless, and inspired by the colors and themes customers see when they walk through the storefront. “As a denim brand we’re constantly thinking about what our customer is wearing with jeans, our goal is to

’90s barrettes and novelty clips are most definitely back—here’s how to wear them in 2019

February 13, 2019 at 11:35AM by CWC Mark my words: 2019 is going to be the year of maximalism when it comes to personal expression. Fashion is embracing what I’ve been screaming for forever: “More is more!” By my count, credit for this shift should really go to Alessandro Michele’s eclectic and sensory overladen direction of Gucci. His over-the-top aesthetic is permeating popular culture and bleeding into all facets of fashion—the latest being hair accessories. The clips, claws, and barrettes making an appearance truly everywhere (high fashion, fast fashion, street style, you name it) are essentially the same ones that once dominated the aisles of Claire’s mall shops in the ’90s. While these hair accessories do have a utilitarian function—keeping your hair out of your face—it’s less about that and more about the way they look like jewelry for your strands. The only real question is not whether or not to wear them, but rather, how do I actually make these look chic and grownup and not like I got ready in my eighth-grade bedroom? In my mission to make this work, I spoke to two bonafide experts: Justine Marjan, celebrity hairstylist and the designer behind some of the Kitsch hair accessories you’ve seen all over Instagram, and Christine Thompson, the co-founder of cult favorite hair salon Spoke & Weal, which has locations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Nashville, and more cities here in the states. Marjan describes the clips and barrettes that are making a comeback as having “lots of

Spring’s top 5 athleisure trends are bold takes on classic staples

February 13, 2019 at 07:05AM by CWC I think there are few trends from the past several years that have dominated the fashion industry as much as athleisure. It’s cool, it’s easy-to-wear, it makes me feel like Gigi Hadid, and allows for my on-the-go lifestyle, minus the fuss. That said, athleisure, as a rule, is much more than just a workout look. In fact, it’s more about how to pair those favorite sporty pieces, technical or not, with other more tailored wardrobe staples to create a look that’s equal parts casual, classic, and pulled-together. When it comes to athleisure essentials for this coming spring, fashion and brand consultant Devina Foley says, “It’s all rooted in nostalgia.” It seems apt, of course, as some of today’s most popular streetwear styles were the ones that were initially in-demand a decade or two ago. Among them are ’90s staples like Adidas track pants, Champion sweatshirts, and the retro sneakers like the Reebok Aztrek, Nike M2K Tekno and Air Max ’97, and Fila Disruptor. But, while Foley looks to the past for a little inspiration, she’s keeping her looks current by embracing bright and bold options for some of those throwback styles that pack a little bit of a stronger punch. From leopard patterns to exaggerated wide-leg shapes, here are all the athleisure essentials you’re going to be seeing everywhere this spring—and what to shop to get that head-start on the trends that are about to hit it big. This Valentine’s Day, I’m in a committed relationship with my beauty products

February 13, 2019 at 07:00AM by CWC I’ve been single for exactly one year, four months, and 26 days (who’s counting?). My last breakup was a traumatic one for a myriad of complicated reasons, which left me swearing off relationships for good (okay fine—at least for now). So instead, I’ve decided to replace the men in my life with a deep, committed love affair with beauty products. Allow me to explain: In the wake of that breakup, I felt like complete and total garbage. Physically, mentally, emotionally…the whole nine. And at first, I didn’t know how to fill all those sad, endless hours alone other than listening to Britney Spears’ “Everytime” on repeat, refreshing my ex’s Instagram, and crying. Like, really crying. Eventually, after a lot longer than I would like to admit (it was a dark few months, lemme tell ya), I decided I needed to do something—anything, really—to pull myself out the horrible, painful funk I’d fallen into. So I turned to my beauty cabinet. My Sunday afternoons, which had previously been occupied by me snuggling up on the couch with my boyfriend (yeah, we were those people), became a full-on self-care day. I spent hours lounging in the bath with some combination of bath bombs, salts, and essential oils swirling around me, and some type of clay mask slathered on my face or hair mask slicked through my strands. And every night, instead of engaging in the pillow talk or, erm, other “evening activities” that relationship me had become so accustomed to,

Meet the ultimate self-love-inspiring Valentine’s Day queen: Ariana Grande

February 12, 2019 at 11:52AM by CWC After a seriously tumultuous 2018, Ariana Grande is basically a phoenix emerging from flames. She lost her ex Mac Miller to overdose and called off her whirlwind engagement to Pete Davidson, but she never stopped pushing out empowering bops like it’s her job (which, uh, I guess it is). That’s why this Valentine’s Day, there’s nobody better to look up to than the “thank u, next” singer, who’s basically the walking embodiment of self love. Here are some great, Grande-approved ways to be your own Valentine in 2019. Be so grateful for your ex (or at least learn from the pain) In reality, moving on from someone isn’t as simple as “thank u, next.” I have trouble with it every day, and I’m not even at war with any of my past flings. I mean, okay, some can definitely go to hell, but I rationally understand there’s a good reason why I’m not with any of them. And since that truth is steadfast, I can find some gratitude for my exes’ roles in our relationships ending—none of them were meant to be my destiny. If gratitude is out of your grasp, maybe look more to the “one taught me love, one taught me patience, and one taught me pain” side of things. Even if more of your situations lean toward “pain,” every relationship is a learning experience and opportunity for growth. Try this Ari-inspired exercise when you examine a failed relationship: Pause and ask yourself,

Use Mandy Moore’s script-memorizing technique to make your work presentations award-worthy

February 12, 2019 at 05:39AM by CWC Mandy Moore has delivered some seriously impressive monologues in her day. Exhibit A: the “never, ever in my life have I burnt a chocolate soufflé” scene from modern classic (don’t argue—it’s great) Because I Said So. Exhibit B: the epic deal she makes with her evil “mother” to save Eugene’s life at the conclusion of Tangled (ugh!). Exhibit C: basically some scene in most episodes of This Is Us. The gal doesn’t shy away from long-winded, heartfelt solos. So when I had the opportunity to ask her how she prepares for the emotionally driven scenes that require a mind-bending amount of memorization, I hoped I could apply her tips for my own benefit. “Sometimes there will be huge monologues, and I never feel like it’s a burden,” she tells me during our conversation in partnership with Nature’s Way. “I’m like, okay, I’ve got this.” She adds that if she approaches the challenge with a singular goal of memorizing everything down to the letter, she risks sabotaging her progress. Instead, she’s found that establishing trust in her own ability to deliver her role yields the best results. “I know my routine and my rhythm…. I know I’ll be able to get it and I just take the pressure off myself,” says Moore. In practice, this means she reads the script again and again (and again), but never sweats the small stuff, like an ad-lib that doesn’t change the integrity or ethos of her scene. So to see if I

The 5 style steps Gigi Hadid uses to create an off-duty look post workout

February 11, 2019 at 02:21PM by CWC Gigi Hadid spends a lot of time, both on and off the runway, in head-to-toe high fashion looks. But the 23-year-old supermodel says that when’s she’s truly off duty, she prefers to keep things sporty. “Athleisure is very much what comes naturally to me,” Hadid shared at the launch of Reebok x Gigi Hadid, her first full-scale collection for the sportswear brand she’s repped since 2016. “My style’s very practical,” says Hadid, who explains her personal approach to fashion is rooted in streetwear and sports—she grew up playing volleyball. “I moved to New York, [when] I came to The New School. I was going to class, and after class, I would take the subway to the gym. I didn’t want to change into leggings, so I would wear leggings with a sports bra and a T-shirt.” To this, she’d add a few key accessories, which she says have become a uniform of sorts for her. And it’s this formula that’s informed her Reebok collab. The 24-piece collection is a ‘90s dream. There are neons, throwback windbreakers made from a nylon plain weave, which Hadid lovingly refers to as “parachute material,” sweatpants that are perfectly high-waisted without looking over-the-top, and platform sneakers that would make the Spice Girls swoon. Aside from its nod to the decade she was born, Hadid says her other major goal was to keep the collection accessible, a growing trend in fashion at the moment. The first drop ranges from $35
