Huda Beauty Launches its First (and Only) Mascara

May 13, 2020 at 08:00PM Rejoice, mascara fans, for beauty mogul Huda Kattan has today blessed the world with the very first Huda Beauty mascara. Called Legit Lashes, the new product is dual-ended (one side is for Volume and the other is for Curl & Length), meaning it delivers two different brushes and two different formulas – both of which are full size – to help you build the best lashes of your life. According to the brand, the formulas have been “clinically proven to volumize, lengthen, lift and curl lashes.” Plus, the product has been designed to deliver a false lash-like effect, minus the hassle. In a YouTube video announcing the release of the product Kattan said, “I never thought we’d do this when we launched Huda Beauty. My needs for lashes are just so big, so intense, that I just couldn’t see me ever choosing mascara over false lashes.” Until now, that is. Five years in the making, the mascara’s Volume formula uses low gravity volumizing 5mm-long fibres to create weightless volume, whilst the Curl & Length formula uses gripping waxes and fibres to elongate lashes. Plus, the specially designed curved brush helps to grab small lashes for added oomph. Given that everyone is looking for something different, Kattan said she wanted to make a formula that delivered exceptional results for every person that used it. “Mascara is so personal. My dream was to do one that worked on everybody no matter their lash type.” The before and

Why You’ll Still See New Window Displays at Toronto’s Gaspard Boutique

May 13, 2020 at 07:10PM While taking my daily morning walk through Toronto’s West Queen West neighbourhood, I’m consistently struck by the number of businesses that I pass that have boarded up windows. One shop that’s been a kind of oasis amid the brick-and-mortar drought is Gaspard, a boutique that focuses on selling lines from brands based in Europe and Japan. “It’s important for my mental health, but also for our customers who miss coming to the shop,” says co-owner Jennifer Halchuk about the routine she and partner Richard Lyle have maintained in keeping their lively window dressing going. View this post on Instagram Et Voila! Antoni & Alison magic a la Richard:) @antoni_and_alison A post shared by GASPARD (@gaspardto) on Mar 8, 2020 at 12:50pm PDT //www.instagram.com/embed.js Halchuck and Lyle, like their peers, have found online interactions now dominate their sales figures, but still having an IRL presence through changing displays could provoke an interaction. “Maybe they will send me an email,” says Halchuk of the nearby resident whose interest might be piqued thanks to a glimpse of an Antoni & Alison dress or a vibrant scarf by Inouitoosh. Scarves from the shop were certainly in hot demand leading up to Mother’s Day last week—Halchuk says she was at the post office every day leading up to Sunday’s festivities mailing them out. But she hopes as the weather turns, shoppers will turn their attention to Gaspard’s other wares, like pieces from the new brands the store had picked up

8 Simple Men’s Chains to Buy if You’ve Been Inspired by Normal People’s Connell Waldron

May 13, 2020 at 05:45PM The humble men’s chain is having a resurgence of late, largely thanks to the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s book Normal People. The male lead character – Connell Waldron – has triggered a social media avalanche thanks to the subtle silver chain he sports across the series. Whether adorning his bare chest or subtly framing a crew neck tee, the chain has become more of a thirst trap than actor Paul Mescal himself. In fact, there’s an entire Instagram account dedicated to it, with 94,000 followers and counting. View this post on Instagram The chain + tan really hits different #connellschain ? A post shared by Connell Waldron’s Chain (@connellschain) on May 5, 2020 at 10:26am PDT //www.instagram.com/embed.js In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Mescal acknowledged the account’s popularity saying, “It’s slightly terrifying. I’d be slightly embarrassed if the chain account took over my follower count. But it’s probably going to happen at some time, so I better reconcile that fact, that the chain will always be more popular than I am.” He added that, as someone who’s always worn a chain, he’s happy to see the accessory finally get the credit it deserves. “Hopefully we’re doing a good thing for chains all around the world and we’ll see them getting the correct respect they deserve. We’ve been sleeping on chains far too long in my opinion.” On the celebrity front, Shawn Mendes, Brad Pitt and Jake Gyllenhaal are all partial to a

How to Take Your Beauty Routine From Winter to Summer

May 12, 2020 at 10:16PM As you swap out your winter clothes for lighter layers, your skin and hair could also use a seasonal update. Ahead, pro-recommended tweaks to keep your complexion and your strands healthy and flawless as you transition from winter to a summer beauty routine. BEST FACE FORWARD Double up on SPF “Summers are usually forgiving on your skin, but there’s one thing you have to be careful about: A lot of women and men experience hyperpigmentation,” says Dr. Sheetal Sapra, director of dermatology and co-founder of ICLS in the Greater Toronto Area. And don’t assume you only need SPF in the scorching summer—by April, the UV Index can hit or surpass 3 (considered moderate), and sun exposure is a trigger for stubborn dark spots. For daily protection year-round, Sapra favours mineral sunscreens, but these are often not adequately water-resistant. His pro trick? If you’re working up a sweat outside in spring and summer, layer a chemical sunscreen over your mineral one. Ditch the rich stuff Once you’ve put away your winter woollens, you can likewise lighten up your moisturizer by trading your jar of rich cream for a gel-based hydrator or a hyaluronic acid serum. Pores tend to get bigger and produce more oil in warmer weather, says Sapra, noting that guys tend to get slicker than women do and they’re also more acne-prone. “In the winter, I’ll use a very gentle cleanser—no exfoliants,” he says. But in the summer, to de-gunk pores, you can switch

This Long Weekend, Take a Trip With These Travel-Inspired Scents

May 12, 2020 at 10:00PM Right now, aside from the occasional trip to the grocery store, the only travelling we’re really doing is from our couch to our kitchen to our bed. As the days turn into weeks and the weeks turn into months, it’s becoming clearer that we’re not going to be able to “escape” to a beautiful destination anytime soon. Any hope for grand summer plans may be drifting away, but there is still one way to be transported to a sunny beach or bustling city. Stock up on travel-inspired candles and essential oils that remind you of your favourite travel spots, or that evoke visions of places you’ve always wanted to visit. It may not be as good as the real thing, but it’s still a sensory escape of sorts, and that’s enough for now. AromaTech Vancouver-based scent company AromaTech has just launched a Cities Collection, a selection of diffuser blend aroma oils made with raw and natural ingredients, to evoke the energy associated with various cities around the world.
The Vancouver aroma, for example, contains notes of juniper, pine, cedar, ocean water and sea salt in a nod to the coastal city’s lush forests; New York has notes of coffee, chocolate, Bailey’s, almond and sandalwood to reflect the city’s bustling coffee shops; while Tokyo has notes of yuzu, wasabi, cherry blossom, hinoki wood and green tea representing both the vibrancy of the city and the tranquility of its gardens. image courtesy AromaTech Homesick Homesick’s travel-inspired candles and

32 of the Best Ever Red Carpet Moments From the Cannes Film Festival

May 12, 2020 at 08:21PM If 2020 were a normal year, the Cannes Film Festival would have been opening in the French Riviera today. The celebrities would have started pouring in, alternating between their best resort wear for daytime photo calls and their most extravagant eveningwear for the nighttime premieres. Each year, the festival brings some of the year’s most incredible red carpet moments – the glitz and glamour of the location seemingly influencing the outfit choices of its many Hollywood attendees. However, given that the world is currently in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s festival has been cancelled. Instead, the festival’s board has decided to collaborate with other festivals scheduled to be held later in the year to premiere some of this year’s films, though at this stage it is entirely unknown as to what could go ahead. So, in lieu of 10 days of red carpets, we’re diving back into the archives to relive some of the most memorable moments in the festival’s history. From Sophia Loren’s ultra-glamorous turn in 1955 to Princess Diana’s appearance in 1987, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s first (and only) red carpet moment in 2004 and beyond, there’s been no shortage of jaw-dropping moments across the years. Three Canadian Beauty Brands Making Hand Sanitizer

May 12, 2020 at 05:53PM There’s no doubt that hand sanitizer has become an important item in each of our homes since the COVID-19 pandemic began in Canada – and chances are it will continue to be a staple in our post-pandemic lives, too. With global shortages of the product kicking in almost immediately, beauty brands have increasingly pivoted their production facilities to produce hand sanitizer for both frontline workers and consumers. If you’re in need of another bottle and are looking to #shoplocal right now, here’s which Canadian beauty brands are selling hand sanitizer: Nudestix Photograph courtesy of Nudestix Cult Canadian beauty brand Nudestix has today announced the launch of its very own hand sanitizer. Available in clip packs of 5 ($10), a refillable 100ml to-go bottle ($9) and a 500ml family size bottle ($13), the brand says its formula has been “formulated with vegan-powered, good-for-skin ingredients” which help to hydrate hands and protect them from drying out. It also contains 62 per cent ethanol to effectively kill germs and bacteria and is Health Canada-approved. For every hand gel purchased on the brand’s website, Nudestix will donate one 30ml bottle to at-risk communities. Additionally, the brand has committed to donating 20,000 bottles to frontline workers across the country. Get yours here. The Bata Shoe Museum’s Senior Curator on Its 25th Anniversary, the Power of Shoes and More

May 11, 2020 at 10:24PM The Bata Shoe Museum may be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, but its creative director and senior curator Elizabeth Semmelhack has a momentous milestone of her own to celebrate too: 20 years working at the renowned Toronto museum. Semmelhack began working at the museum in 2000 as a curator, armed with a doctorate degree in Japanese art history. “I wasn’t exactly sure how long I would stay in footwear but I do have to say that even after 20 years there are so many questions I still want to have answered, and I have found the subject really, really interesting,” says Semmelhack over the phone. “20 years ago, and even more so when the museum opened 25 years ago, the idea that footwear was a subject for serious academic inquiry was just not on people’s radars yet,” she says. Like the mass-produced 18th century Japanese prints that she was studying before she joined the Bata Shoe Museum, shoes are created for mass consumption, a point of academic interest for Semmelhack. “I’m very interested in things that become mass consumed because those are the things that speak to a moment. Rather than a unique object that maybe is ahead of its time or only speaks to a few people, something like shoes— when they go viral or become central to constructions of gender or status—they’re doing really wide-ranging and important work that needs interrogation.” In honour of the Bata Shoe Museum’s 25th anniversary, we spoke
