Heirloom’s New Collection is The Visual Cheer We Need

April 29, 2020 at 06:17PM Celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, Samantha-Tara Mainville’s millinery label has grown a reputation for delighting a crowd of contemporary-minded hat enthusiasts. But that’s not all she offers—a video call-worthy assortment of head pieces are available on Heirloom’s website and are instant mood-boosters. After studying jewellery design, Mainville set her sights on hat-making, and each piece crafted in the brand’s Montreal studio is handmade with fine materials like natural straw and linen; and for this season, Mainville collaborated with Canadian 3D-printed accessory brand Gament Designs on an array of playful hair clips. We caught up with Mainville to chat more about her new collection and hat-wearing icons. How did you get into hat-making? It was a long process, and not a straight-and-narrow path. For as long as I can remember I have wanted to use my hands for a living—more specifically in the fashion industry. I’m a little bit of a textile fan/nerd and have always known that textile would be my medium. Millinery is and was a dying trade, so I hadn’t even considered it an option since there was nothing to expose me to it; they have pretty much closed all of the millinery programs in fashion schools throughout Canada. I also have been collecting hats for a while. They seemed like this magical unknown mystery to me, and then one day I actually stopped to think, how are hats made? I did a little bit of research and found one person that

Who on The Internet Can You Trust to Give You Truthful Beauty Reviews?

April 28, 2020 at 10:22PM Last year, cult favourite skincare brand Sunday Riley settled an investigation with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) after it was revealed that the company’s employees had been posting fake positive reviews of its products on Sephora’s website to help boost sales.  In October 2018, a former employee shared a leaked email from the company on Reddit that encouraged employees to write positive reviews and disapprove negative ones. “We need to make sure the reviews for clients stay positive and help generate confidence in the products,” read the directive. “If you notice someone saying things like I didn’t like ‘x’ about it, write a review that says the opposite.” The email went viral after a screenshot was also shared by social media watchdog Estée Laundry, which is considered the beauty industry’s version of Diet Prada. In the end, the FTC banned the company from posting fake reviews but didn’t impose any fines.  Given how much consumers rely on product reviews—a seemingly sacred space for getting honest feedback—this social media snafu invites the question “Whom should people trust in the beauty industry?” In an age where consumers value authenticity and demand transparency, the proliferation of fake product reviews and “sponcon” has created a certain level of mistrust. Add to that a few self-styled experts with questionable or no credentials and you’ve got a murky landscape that’s difficult to navigate for the average beauty consumer.  It’s precisely this environment that has given rise to Estée Laundry. The

Everything You Need to Know Before Cutting Your Own Bangs

April 28, 2020 at 05:43PM It’s week seven of social distancing, and chances are that your boredom is beginning to reach its peak. So much so, that many of us are considering cutting our own bangs it would seem – according to Pinterest, searches on how to cut your own bangs are up a huge 102 per cent. Bella Hadid recently cut her own, and I’m almost 100 per cent positive one of your friends already has but the question remains, should you? To find out if it’s possible to give yourself a new look and not immediately regret it, I reached out to Canadian hairstylist Kirsten Klontz. Before you pick up the scissors, here’s what she had to say: OK first things first, is it possible to cut your own bangs and not immediately regret your decision? Yes of course! It is definitely less of a risk if you already have bangs that are a bit grown out and you are just looking to trim them. If you are considering a big change on your own – do your research on styles, maybe even DM your hairstylist for a second opinion. Hair is something that is an expressive extension of your personality and it’s fun to change it. For anyone considering cutting their own bangs, what is your advice for them? Please put down those kitchen scissors – it’s better that you use a shear that has a fine point for better precision. You can find a variety of

Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life of Olympian Sarah Nurse

April 28, 2020 at 03:14PM As people around the country enter their seventh week of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, athletes and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us. Sarah Nurse, ice hockey player and Olympic medalist Whenever something major happens in the world on a macro level, it hits home differently for every person. For me, the pandemic turned my world upside down on March 7th. I was in Arizona when we got the news that our Women’s World Hockey Championship was going to be cancelled. We were devastated, we had prepared and worked so hard on the ice, but we had also been working tirelessly off the ice. Our professional hockey league folded 12 months ago, leaving us with nowhere to play. So 200 of the best female hockey players in the world came together as the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA), where we are fighting for equality and to create a professional hockey league for future generations of females to dream of playing in. Where we get paid a liveable wage, have more media exposure and have the resources and infrastructure in place to be truly professional (much like the WNBA and the NHL). The World Championship was going to be on home soil in Halifax, NS and we were

Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior Among Luxury Brands Rallying for COVID-19 Fundraiser

April 27, 2020 at 08:29PM As we settle into week seven of social distancing, our eyes are glued to the news for any hint of when this pandemic may come to and end. With no definitive end in sight for us as yet here in Canada (and much of the rest of the world), brands are increasingly rallying to help support frontline healthcare workers in any way possible. Locally, a group of 20 Toronto-based designers came together to help raise money for the University Health Network this past weekend, and on a global scale, several of the world’s biggest luxury brands are now rallying for what is shaping up to be one of the most memorable auctions in fashion’s history. Run by La Mode S’Engage, the auction will support non-profit organization #ProtegeTonSoignant, which means protect your caregiver, as it sources and distributes supplies to healthcare workers in France. The auction has already drawn more than 80 brands – including Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga,  Celine and Comme des Garçons. According to Business of Fashion, “each designer will be tasked with either customizing an item from their archive or designing a new garment from scratch for the auction.” The only thing that each design must include is the signature electric blue colour of #ProtegeTonSoignant. For those designers who don’t have access to their archives/materials at home, sketches of the garment will be accepted or they can opt to offer a made-to-order piece through the auction instead. All proceeds from the auction
