There’s a Global Effort Behind Goodee’s New Tote

June 22, 2020 at 01:00PM Made in collaboration with the United Nations Ethical Fashion Initiative and Italian social co-operative Cartiera, the new Bassi Market tote from Goodee is truly the result of a meeting of the minds. Not only is it crafted with handwoven textiles made by artisans connected by social co-operatives in Burkina Faso but its design was conceived by Goodee’s founders, Montreal’s Byron and Dexter Peart, who launched the renowned luxury brand Want Les Essentiels (best known for its selection of natty handbags). The tote’s launch is another feather in the cap of the Peart brothers, who saw their marketplace brand earn enviable B Corp certification earlier this year. “As a company founded on principles of sustainability and mindful connection to our world, becoming a certified B Corp felt like a natural fit from day one,” said co-founder Byron Peart at the time of the prestigious announcement. “It validates our raison d’être—to create a world where caring for people and the planet comes first—and ensures we always live up to the high standards we’ve set for ourselves.” In addition to its work with the United Nations Ethical Fashion Initiative and Cartiera, Goodee has partnered with fellow B Corp brands like Antwerp-based children’s decor brand Ecobirdy, and Danish furniture company Skagerak. June 22, 2020 at 01:00PM As the sunshine (hopefully) settles in for the season ahead here in Canada, and much of the country begins to reopen after months spent in quarantine, we can finally start to think about what summer makeup looks we’ll wear on our outings (beyond the grocery store). From high shine to bold colours, unexpected pairings and art-influenced application, there’s no shortage of ways to welcome the summer season on your face. The trick? Keep your base fresh and dewy and go bold everywhere else. Below, find five of our favourite summer makeup looks to try over the next few months (almost all of which are face mask-friendly, too!): Shine Factor Face gloss is having a major moment. Try it on eyes, lips, cheeks and even collarbones for a truly dewy complexion this summer. Sunset Strip Think outside the box and go for a mesmerizing eye look inspired by one of the most photographed events in nature. Colour Theory One thing’s for sure: Mixing and pairing contrasting hues on top and bottom eyelids creates a show-stopping gaze. Lip Service Tired of your same old bold shades? Pairing your go-to lipstick with an unconventional liner colour gives a whole new meaning to “statement lips.” Finger Paint Letting go of standard makeup application techniques is the key to acing a painterly eye look like this one. Quebec-based Brand Noemiah Has Launched a Video to Celebrate Its New Collection

June 19, 2020 at 02:00PM Set in the idyllic forest where her Laurentian-area home is situated, designer Noemie Vaillancourt’s brand Noemiah posted a Richmond Lam-directed video this week to showcase her new pieces under the collection name ‘Fleur de Peau’. “I live in the woods with my boyfriend, and the video was filmed around here,” says Vaillancourt, adding she still has a studio in Montreal where here made-to-order pieces are crafted. “We wanted to capture the essence of the collection and what I see when I design.” Vaillancourt’s starting point for the array of charming garments, which feature a print designed in collaboration with artist Paule T.B., came from reading a Dominique Fortier book about Emily Dickinson, and Vaillancourt’s subsequent discovery of Dickinson’s herbarium. A floral motif swirls on garments like a billowing smock dress and a scalloped collar done in a decadent silk organza. The lookbook for the collection was photographed by Naomie Tremblay, and the photographer can be seen in the recently uploaded video. “The ladies in the film are my friends and collaborators,” says Vaillancourt, who has also worked with Montreal-based creative Estée Preda for her designs. Being surrounded by nature has made Vaillancourt more contemplative about the future of her brand, which was founded almost 12 years ago. In addition to working with sustainable fabrics and specifically tailoring designs for her customers (Noemiah currently offers a size range up to 4x), Vaillancourt says she’s always thinking about “what I want and what I don’t want for

Texture Talk: Your Pro-Approved Guide to the World of Wigs

June 18, 2020 at 10:31PM Welcome to Texture Talk, a weekly column that celebrates and deep dives into the dynamic world of curly hair, from crowns of curls that are free flowing to strands that are tucked away in a protective style. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been chatting a lot about wigs in this series, knowing very well that there are likely many readers out there who have never dabbled much — or at all — in the wig game. So, we thought it would be helpful to serve up our very own Wig 101, a beginner’s guide to the most popular wigs styles out there and the biggest tips and tricks everyone should know. To help us out, we tapped wig expert Jordan Rodney, a resident hairstylist at Toronto’s JouJou Hair Salon. Jordan, who is an avid wig wearer himself, is the go-to stylist of Cityline’s very own Tracy Moore. The biggest reason women come and sit in his chair? “Most of my clients that wear wigs have a busy lifestyle, and they want to eliminate that time in the morning to have to style their natural hair. They don’t want to worry about having to do a wash-n-go or twist outs,” he shares. Here, Jordan breaks down the different wig styles and what to know when it comes to proper wig maintenance. Farfetch Launches New Fashion Footprint Calculator

June 18, 2020 at 08:29PM E-commerce giant Farfetch has announced the launch of a new online sustainability calculator designed to help consumers gain a better understanding of the environmental impact of their purchases. The fashion footprint tool outlines the impact of specific materials used within a piece, as well as the savings they would make if they opted to buy the item second-hand. To coincide with the launch of the calculator, Farfetch also released a report in partnership with the London Waste and Recycling Board which focused on the pre-owned market (in the US, UK and China). The report found that, on average, a pre-owned purchase can save 1 kilogram of waste, 3,040 litres of water and 22 kilograms of CO2 compared to a new piece. Thomas Berry, the director of sustainable business at Farfetch told WWD, “A lot of consumers have said they want to buy into brands doing the right things, and that they would want to stop buying from brands that are not doing the basics in terms of sustainability.” He added that the tool is designed to help customers choose from “a range of great fashion that we have on Farfetch, a large amount of which just happens to be conscious.” The addition of the calculator is the latest in a string of sustainability-focused initiatives by the e-commerce platform. Earlier this year, it held a pop-up for archival, pre-owned Chanel pieces and introduced a donation service in partnership with Thrift+ in the UK whereby users can sell

JW Anderson Designs Genderless Capsule Collection for Yoox

June 17, 2020 at 04:16PM This year marks the 20th anniversary of e-commerce platform Yoox, and to celebrate, British designer JW Anderson has designed an exclusive genderless capsule collection for the site. The capsule is made up of 10 pieces, including ready-to-wear items, handbags and footwear. The designs were inspired by archival pieces and themes from the designer’s previous collections. Speaking to WWD about the gender-fluid collection, Anderson – who was worked with Yoox since 2011 – said, “I remember when Yoox first approached us about doing something for their 20th anniversary and I thought it would be interesting to do something that looked at things we have in the past at JW Anderson. We really looked at what we thought would make sense for the capsule and created some asymmetric pieces, a shirt dress and a skirt, and a patchwork trench coat. Patchwork is a recurring JW Anderson code and I think the colour palette feels very British in a way and Britishness is part of our DNA.” A neutral striped hoodie is sure to catch the attention of loungewear lovers – or those who are planning their return-to-work wardrobes and want comfort to be key after months of working from home – whilst the silk shirting will work for any and every occasion. The slip-on backless loafer is an excellent piece of transition footwear, too. <div class="sjm-attachment-carousel–header gallery-container–default" data-slick='{"speed":400,"adaptiveHeight":true,"variableWidth":false,"centerMode":true,"centerPadding":"0","slidesToShow":1,"lazyLoad":"ondemand","prevArrow":"Previous”,”nextArrow”:”Next”}’ data-simplemodal=’false’ > Photograph courtesy of Yoox Photograph courtesy of Yoox Photograph courtesy of Yoox Photograph courtesy of Yoox Photograph courtesy

Shopify Highlights Black-Owned Businesses on Shop App

June 17, 2020 at 03:23PM Canadian e-commerce platform Shopify has updated its Shop app to feature a spotlight on Black-owned businesses. From today, when customers open the app and click on the ‘shops’ tab, they’ll see a clickable message box directing them to a list of Black-owned businesses they can shop then and there. It’s a win-win for both brands and consumers in the sense that it gives businesses greater visibility and opportunity to be discovered on site, and customers a chance to discover and support a brand they may not previously have known. Photograph courtesy of Spotify Writing about the change on its blog, the Ottawa-based company wrote, “Shopify’s mission has always been to help all people – no matter their race, religion, gender, sexuality or otherwise – achieve independence by making it easier to start, run and grow a business. We are committed to elevating the awareness of Black-owned businesses to support more voices in entrepreneurship, democratize commerce and reduce the barriers to starting a business for everyone.”  Shopify added that it will continue to “evolve the [app] experience to present a diversity of voices that reflects our mission to make commerce better for everyone.” The new update follows the company’s donations to the NAACP, Black Health Alliance Canada and Campaign Zero in recent weeks, totaling $1 million.
