These are the best glasses for every face shape—be it round, oval, heart, or square

December 09, 2018 at 09:40AM While glasses were once thought to be a nerdy necessity, these days a chic pair of spectacles is as much an in-demand accessory as a pair of statement earrings, patterned tights, or an ethi-cool handbag. So while you no longer need to hide your less-than-20/20-vision behind contact lenses, one problem that persists in the eyewear world is finding the best pair of glasses for your face shape. First, there are so many different face shapes out there—round, square, heart, diamond, the list goes on—and sometimes it’s hard to know what shape your face qualifies as. (Here are some handy visuals to help you figure it out.) The good news? According to Kim Nemser, vice president of product strategy at Warby Parker, picking the right pair of glasses is less about face shape and more about trusting your instincts. “First, it’s all about having fun and picking frames that make you feel comfortable and confident,” explains Nemser. “We recommend looking for a pair of frames that balances your face shape. If you’ve got a round face, look for an angular shape. Or, consider a pair of round-lensed frames to complement a strong jawline. But above all, pick what makes you look and feel great.” While we’re all for a you-do-you method of picking out, well, anything, from your frames to how you wear your pubic hair, TBH. If you’d rather have more of a concrete guide based on face shape, no worries. We’ve got that, too! Here’s

Keep, regift, or return? This flowchart will tell you what to do with those awful (but thoughtful!) presents

December 07, 2018 at 08:33AM Ah, the season of giving…and receiving. While the holiday joy may be as palpable as the sweat in a SoulCycle locker room, nothing deflates the good vibes quicker than unwrapping a terrible gift. You don’t doubt that your Great Aunt Pearl or work wife or new hot fling meant well when selecting a prezzie for you, but that doesn’t change the reality that you now need to give an Oscars-worthy performance and matching acceptance speech to cover up the fact that you hate that necklace, or that hand-knit throw blanket, or that Kindle you’ll truly never use, or that sweater that is just so…yolky (you hate yellow, okay?). Instead of just grinning (through your tears) and bearing it, wouldn’t it be better for all parties if you could turn your bad present into something you’ll actually enjoy? Because, hey, that’s kind of whole point, and any other course of action would be a missed opportunity. But it’s a lot more complicated than saying, “No, thanks!” and asking if the giver knows the store’s return policy: Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman says the best way to proceed with a God-awful gift depends on who the gifter is, the quality of your relationship, and what the item in question even is. “The bottom line is to not offend anyone and to keep hurt feelings at bay,” she says. “If your neighbor brings you a tin of treats, and they’re terrible, it’s not your responsibility to tell them that; just

Why I’m ditching party dresses for embellished sweatshirts this year

December 06, 2018 at 09:42AM I was trying on dresses the other week for my cousin’s upcoming New Year’s Eve wedding, and I thought I had come across the one. It fit perfectly and was emblazoned with festive AF emerald sequins—but I could tell it was going to be uncomfortable… just like every other sparkly dress I tried on. I’ve spent too many otherwise enjoyable functions being slowly lacerated by the sequins on my dresses. As I stared at my reflection, I realized I could not—nay, would not—shove myself into another uncomfortable dress for a holiday occasion. I’ve spent too many otherwise enjoyable functions being slowly lacerated by the shiny disks on my dresses. (One time a strapless, sequined sheath gave me such bad, itchy marks that it looked like a had a weird rash under my arms for weeks.) Enter: embellished sweatshirts and sweaters. Sure, they aren’t foolproof (get some sequins too close to the neckline and it’s game over), but in my humble opinion, I’ve found them to be, on the whole, much more comfortable than sparkly dresses/blazers/pants/you name it. And they come in so many different options—you can go for an oversized zip-up hoodie á la this Nicole Miller one that’s so shiny it would make The Rainbow Fish jealous. Or, go for a monochromatic look that plays with texture like this DVF crewneck that I would probably Rumplestiltskin my first child for. (I know that’s not very festive, don’t @ me; it’s called hyperbole.) If you

How to make your place look presentable for guests in 30 minutes or less

December 06, 2018 at 06:54AM If you’re as into Hallmark Channel holiday movies as I am, you probably have an idealized mental picture of what a festive gathering should look like: an apartment dripping in pine tree boughs and fairy lights, a Pinterest-worthy cheese plate and kombucha punch bowl on the kitchen counter, and you clad in some cozy-glam combination of statement earrings, cashmere, and impressively contoured eyeshadow. The reality? If you’re not a fictional character played by Lacey Chabert, having friends over usually goes a bit differently. In my case, it involves frantically stuffing my living-room clutter into a closet, lint-rolling cat hair off the sofa while ordering pizza on Postmates—and barely having time to swipe on some red lipstick before the doorbell rings. As someone with a more-than-full-time job and lots of extracurriculars on my iCal, I simply don’t have hours to spend getting my home party-ready. (Or, like, even one hour.) If this plight sounds familiar, however, there’s no need to stress. As I recently learned from a few pro organizers, all you really need is 30 minutes and some tricks of the home styling trade to clean up before guests arrive. Take their advice, and you’ll free up precious pregaming time for what really matters—like perfecting your chocolate hummus recipe and crafting the perfect “Thank U, Next”-centric playlist. Here’s how to clean house fast when you’re short on time. Photo: Getty Images/Cavan Images 1. Be strategic about which rooms you clean While you might feel like you

How the Olsen Twins helped me discover blazers are the key to living your best life

November 13, 2018 at 03:59AM Every woman has those power pieces that supercharge her personal style. And we’ve found, by walking up to enough strangers on the street (and women in our own office), that if you gas her up, she’ll share her best fashion advice with you. Starting today, we’re collecting these pearls of wisdom in a new series, Good Style. First up is our associate beauty editor Rachel Lapidos, who swears blazers are the key to living her best life. Keep reading to hear why and how they came to be her sartorial spirit animal.  To me, blazers are kind of like a really good pair of jeans or a bold lip in that putting one on immediately makes me feel more confident. I started wearing them in high school in Texas, and I’m pretty sure it’s because of the Olsen Twins when they used to be on the cover of US Weekly all the time, rocking blazers in the coolest way possible. I got so lucky back then on my hunts while shopping at Goodwills and Salvation Army stores—even sometimes in the little boys’ sections. Lately though, I’ve been going to Etsy for my vintage shopping. I found my red blazer there—I like them a little longer, structured, and oversized; it makes them more interesting. Photo: Well+Good Creative At this point, I wear them literally everywhere, pretty much all year long. They look great with all different types of shirts: band T-shirts or just vintage T-shirts in

Constantly losing one earring? Here’s some good news for you

November 09, 2018 at 09:00AM Watching Desperately Seeking Susan for the first time as an impressionable 14-year-old was a revelatory experience. It taught me that personal ads are a great source of entertainment (R.I.P Craiglist’s missed connections), there’s no such thing as a free jacket, and most importantly, that all you need for a look is exactly one statement earring. The first time I felt bold enough to experiment with this idea, I was trying to be glass half full about losing a giant, bejeweled cross earring. (It’s honestly still painful to type about.) Instead of calling it a day and burying the other one somewhere I wouldn’t be visually triggered by it, I decided to wear it with another orphaned earring from my jewelry box. Aside from finding a second life for my widowed accessory, asymmetrical earrings are one of those things (like leisure suits or pattern mixing) that just eschews an ere of competence with complex styling. And even if you’re not into the other jewelry revivals from the ’80s, this is still a trend you can get behind without dating your look. The style trick works equally well with more delicate and minimal pieces. To start, you can scrounge through your collection to see if you have any single earrings that speak to you, or you can buy a mismatched pair or standalone statement maker from someone who’s done the work already. For the latter, below is a selection of earrings—some individual, some asymmetrical pairs, and some matching sets that
