August 08, 2019 at 04:00AM by CWC Despite all the healthy eatings trends that come and go (oh hi there, keto), prioritizing fiber is something that nearly every health expert can agree on. Not only does it benefit to every type of healthy eater—whether you’re Paleo, vegan, or something else entirely, veggies are always part of a nutrient-dense diet—the benefits have long been proven: A diet high in fiber has been linked to lowering inflammation, improving gut health, and boosting metabolism. The recommended fiber intake is 25 grams a day for women, which can sometimes be tricky to hit. While it’s best to get your fiber throughout the day as to not overwhelm your digestive system, loading up on fiber-rich sources at dinner can help make up for not getting much of the nutrient earlier. Which is where this arsenal of quick, high-fiber recipes comes in. Bookmark these meal ideas for when you know you haven’t been eating as much veggies—and other fiber-rich sources—as you know you should be. Your digestive system will thank you for it. ad_intervals[‘413540_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘413540_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); Keep reading for high-fiber dinners you can make in 15 minutes or less. Why you should add watermelon to your list of gut-friendly foods
August 06, 2019 at 02:00AM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-hNpK-gM-0] Watermelon is in season right now—watch this video for the 411 on its benefits. Maybe it’s just me, but when I think of gut-friendly foods, I typically picture sauerkraut, Greek yogurt, prunes, and anything else that’s rich in probiotics or fiber. So imagine my surprise when I learned that watermelon—yes, really!—could also be added to that list. In the latest episode of You Versus Food, dietitian Tracy Lockwood-Beckerman explains that watermelon has fiber, which can help with bloating, digestion, inflammation, and gut health. The average woman needs about 25 grams of fiber a day, and you’ll get just over 4 percent of that from a two cup-serving of cubed watermelon. ad_intervals[‘413102_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘413102_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); On top of that, watermelon is made of 92 percent water, Beckerman says. Obviously water can keep your skin looking hydrated, but it can also help ease constipation by, ahem, keeping things moving through your digestive tract. The water plus the fiber make the summer fruit clutch for optimal gut health. Even with watermelon, though, Beckerman says you can have too much of a good thing. “Due to its high lycopene and vitamin-C content, eating too much watermelon can result in diarrhea, indigestion, and bloating,” she explains. Stick with a two-cup serving and you’re good to go. To learn everything else watermelon can do for your health, watch the full video above. And subscribe to our YouTube channel so you never

Finally, a dietitian answers *all* of our questions about keto—and if it’s worth the hype
July 30, 2019 at 12:35PM by CWC [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeuqSMsef20] Got questions about keto? This video has all the answers. If there’s anything more consistently controversial than a new Kardashian product launch, it’s the ketogenic diet. The trendy high-fat, low-carb diet blew up in 2018, and it continues to inform all kinds of new products (hello, MCT oil everything) while dominating the wellness conversation. However, for every doctor, biohacker, and celebrity who swears by the keto diet for healthy weight management, increased energy, and mental clarity, you’ll find an equal amount of skeptics (from acupuncturists to registered dietitians) who argue that the eating plan is overly restrictive without a ton of compelling research to support its supposed benefits. So… what is everyone freaking out over exactly? We asked our favorite nutrition expert, Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, RD, to break it all down for us in the latest episode of You Versus Food. ad_intervals[‘411483_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘411483_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); “The purpose of this diet is to switch our bodies from using its preferred fuel source, carbohydrates, to using fat for energy,” says Beckerman. This is achieved by sticking to very precise macros (lots of fat, moderate amounts of protein, and minimal carbs), which kicks your body ketosis, a metabolic state where fats are broken down into compounds called ketones that can be used for energy. Advocates argue that this unique metabolic state is responsible for the eating plan’s benefits. As for whether the buzzy diet lives

How to eat healthy at IHOP, according to a registered dietitian
July 26, 2019 at 03:00AM by CWC IHOP may go back and forth about whether it wants to remain known as the international house of pancakes or if burgers are their new hero food, but one label it’s never claimed to be is healthy. Let’s be honest: If you’re going to IHOP, chances are it’s because you really want a tall stack of flapjacks—or it’s an ungodly hour and it’s the only place around that’s open. Sometimes, you may want to go all in with that pancake order. But other times, you may want to stick to your preferred eating plan—whatever that looks like for you. Wondering how to pull that off at IHOP? Integrative and functional dietitian Nour Zibdeh, MS, RDN, CLT has it covered. Here, she shares recs on what to order if you’re vegetarian, on the ketogenic diet, or gluten-free. Even if you don’t follow to one of these eating plans, her picks can provide guidance on how to keep your order healthy overall. ad_intervals[‘405095_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘405095_div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-8891272-3’);}); } }, 100); Keep reading for tips on how to eat healthy at IHOP. Vegetarian/vegan Menu picks: House salad; spinach & mushroom omelette What an RD says: If you’re vegetarian, Zibdeh says that IHOP has a lot of omelettes on their menu to choose from. Her favorite is the spinach and mushroom. “I like this one over their egg white omelette because eating the whole egg gives you more omega-3s,” she says. “The
It’s never been trendier to see a chiropractor—but are they all they’re cracked up to be?
July 25, 2019 at 04:00AM by CWC Recently, I’ve noticed that a growing number of my friends won’t stop talking about their chiropractor: I went to the chiropractor yesterday and I feel so good now. The chiropractor totally cleared up my brain fog. Seriously, he’s amazing. My posture is so much better thanks to my chiropractor. I literally stand up straighter. All of the above statements are real gushing accolades from my literally cracked out friends. Even Shut The Kale Up blogger Jeannette Ogden often Instagram stories her QT with her DC. But it’s not just an influencer thing: According to the National Center for Complementary Integrated Health (NCCIH), chiropractor use has risen from 9.1 percent of U.S. adults in 2012 to 10.3 percent in 2017, the latest year statistics are available. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that employment of chiropractors will rise 12 percent between the years 2016 and 2026. So yes, chiros are a trend here to stay. ad_intervals[‘406403_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’] = setInterval(function () { if (ads_ready) { clearTimeout(ad_intervals[‘406403_div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’]); googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-7435403-3’);}); } }, 100); Here’s the thing: I’ve always been skeptical of chiropractors. I had always assumed that they were just the people who cracked backs and helped with posture, yet many popular chiropractors, like model-favorite and Pure Change founder Charles Passler, DC, Perfect Keto founder Austin Gustin, DC, have built careers preaching about nutrition. It’s never been clear to me what chiropractors are qualified to do, and how they’re different (or potentially superior) to physical therapists or traditional
5 Paleo lunch recipes you can make in 5 minutes or less
July 25, 2019 at 02:01AM by CWC A few Instagram influencers aside, nobody meal preps perfectly every single week. Life happens and sometimes all those time- and budget-conscious habits fall apart. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself shelling out $15 for lunch on a regular basis. (When did chopped salads get so pricey anyway?!) If you follow a specific eating plan, such as keto, Whole30, or Paleo, figuring out where to go for lunch can be tricky and require Google searching what healthy grab-and-go places are nearby that offer meals you can actually eat and feel good about. And who has time for that? The lack of time is what got you into this situation in the first place. Even if you’re short on time, chances are, you can find five measly minutes in your day to prep a lunch.
